doctoralthesis.listelement.badge Architecture for machines; production spaces in transition(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2024) Pekdemir Başeğmez, Merve; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThe industry has experienced a new revolution. In this revolution defined as Industry 4.0, smart systems have started to be used in production. Thanks to smart production technologies, a new method has been created in which production can continue non-stop, and workers can monitor the entire process remotely with the help of smart robots and machines. Production spaces designed following this technology are defined as smart factories. While machine spaces where unmanned production methods are applied are being designed in the revolution, on the other hand, humans and production are trying to come together again. This study first investigates how human and machine cooperation changes space. The technologies that have caused revolutions in production since the first invention of the revolution, the steam engine, and the factories transformed by these technologies have been examined. Then, the first smart factories and production spaces in which smart production was carried out in the last revolution of the industry were analysed. With the help of references from the past of production in the context of human, space, and city, the present and future are discussed, and new concepts and codes are produced. Finally, "Plug-in production" proposal is developed for the factory architecture and production environment.masterthesis.listelement.badge An assessment on the Turkish construction industry's approach to innovative facade cladding materials(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Batmaz, Nurefşan; 0000-0001-6212-4330; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıInnovation is generally indicated as the adoption of an idea or behavior which is new to an organization to help to change the current state for the better. In the competitive business environment of a globalized economy, the significance of innovation is rising day by day. The desire to enhance their products and services and reduce costs made construction innovation a challenge among construction companies. The implementation of innovation in building materials and technologies involves the opportunity of creating innovative conditions for architectural design and affects contemporary architectural practices. Within these advancements in building materials and technologies, the expectations from facade design and systems are also influenced inevitably. In this thesis, it is aimed to understand the place of the concept of innovation in the construction industry and the perception of the construction companies in the process of introducing new materials or products to the Turkish construction industry. In accordance with this aim, in this research, facade cladding materials are chosen due to the availability of different systems, materials, and application methods, and the companies that produce facade cladding products are focused. On the basis of this approach, a case study with a product investigation and a survey is conducted, then evaluated and discussed at the end of the study.masterthesis.listelement.badge A comprehensive perspective into the use of origami in architecture(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Demir, Deniz; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıIn today's conditions, in the production methods used by different disciplines, functionality is sought as well as aesthetics, and design decisions are taken at the beginning of the process by considering the functional properties that the product should have. There is a similar situation in architecture, and it is expected that the methods used in finding form will bring other features. There is a need for methods to achieve maximum efficiency in the construction process, which is created by considering environmental performance, cost, aesthetics, and benefits to the user. One of these methods is origami, known as the art of paper folding, and is used as a design technique for architectural design in different countries around the world. The origami technique, which is basically used to obtain three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional paper, is used in architecture to create volumes and surfaces with a similar logic. In the built examples, it is seen that this technique is used to design and construct the building component, building element, or the whole building. While there are projects where this technique is used for form finding, features such as foldability and deployability from origami are used in projects which require different functions. Within the scope of this thesis, a comprehensive perspective is proposed to this technique, which is used for different purposes and at various scales. In this context, it has been seen that there is a relationship between morphology, building performance, and origami pattern characteristics. This connection between them is effective in using origami as a design technique in architecture. This systematic data set was analyzed and the parameters are defined with this approach. The survey method was used to obtain information about the perspectives of the designers who were inspired by origami while designing their projects. It is aimed to collect data on the use of origami in architecture and the relationship between morphology, building performance, and pattern characteristics stated in the thesis. In this way, it is aimed to reach the participants' perspectives, which they have gained through experience, by asking questions related to the proposed perspective. The answers obtained were analyzed and contributed to the comprehensive perspective proposal in the thesis.masterthesis.listelement.badge Conservation of modern architectural heritage: Case study of Sümerbank Kayseri Textile Factory employees' club(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Baz, İrem; 0000-0001-5485-8190; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıEconomic developments, especially in the textile industry, were prioritized in the early Republican period. Sümerbank, established as a state bank in 1933, supported industrial investments. The first factory was opened as Sümerbank Kayseri Textile Factory in 1935, with a loan from the Soviets. The factory complex consists of production, social and residential facilities. Kayseri city center expanded towards this region and a modern urban texture was formed in the area. Houses were built for factory workers, social spaces were created, and kindergartens and schools were opened for the families of the employees. These spaces have created radical changes in the fields of production, education and social life. In 2012, it was transferred to Abdullah Gül University. Some of the buildings have been restored according to needs of the university. However, some are not in use. Employees' Club which was organized for social activities, consists of different functions such as various performances, the main space with stage, club, dining hall, and game hall. The reinforced concrete structure has not been used since the factory was closed, and consequently it has suffered serious damages as a result of abandonment and neglect. In this study, the current situation of the building was documented and its structural and material damages were analyzed. The interventions of the building in the later periods were examined and its original situation was tried to be understood. Finally, suggestions have been developed for the restoration and reuse of the building. Keywords: 20th Century Architecture, Social Facility, Reinforced Concrete Structure, Architectural Conservationmasterthesis.listelement.badge A critical prospect into working spaces for immaterial labour(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, 2019) MUŞ ÖZMEN, NİHAN; AGÜ, Mimarlık Fakültesi, Mimarlık Bölümü; MUŞ ÖZMEN, NİHANOffices, the workplace of immaterial labour, have evolved in various ways since the early 1900s. As a result of mobility that emerged with globalization, people started to use not only offices but also various places such as cafes and airports as workspaces and the concept of office has become more flexible. In the changing world, labour was no longer rigid, but flexible. Is architecture, which failed to fulfil its ideological mission after serving capitalism, able to respond the need of this flexible labour? Are the flexible spaces created by parametric design able to meet the need of flexible labour? Are architects going to be able to serve as ideologues of the society again through the forms they create with parametric design? In this study, starting from the concept of belonging, firstly the importance of place is investigated to understand the concepts of sense of belonging and alienation. Then, capitalism as the basis of today's work life and its processes are argued. Afterwards, movies are investigated to visualize the evolution of office spaces in order to see the change in office spaces. Finally, today's social structure, business life and the role of architecture are discussed with the influences of Tafuri, Sennett and Schumacher and through the movies (with future prospects), the expectations of the office users and the lifestyle predictions; the recommendations are made for future office spaces.doctoralthesis.listelement.badge Developing a model for sustainability of rural heritage in transition: Case of Kayseri Bağpınar(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2024) Elagöz Timur, Bahar; 0000-0003-1631-7638; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThis thesis aims to develop a model for the resilience and sustainability of rural heritages against transition risks and contribute to rural heritage conservation by creating living heritage sites. Additionally, the thesis explains how habitus and rural heritage are dynamically interconnected by emphasizing their organic relationship. Rural heritages, primarily constructed with traditional building techniques, architectural habits, and local materials, inherently reflect the everyday life practices shaped by their users' habitus. These unique lifestyles provide insights into the cultures of communities, aiding in the understanding of larger societies. Therefore, any demand for changes in habitus and everyday life practices directly threatens rural heritage areas. The study highlights the threats posed by the transition of habitus on rural heritage due to emerging demands for change and discusses the risks it poses to rural heritage sites. Sometimes, as rural-to-urban migration increases, and at other times, changes in rural habitus and everyday life practices due to technology and modern life emerge. Understanding this balance of relationships and developing sustainable conservation approaches by calculating the risks through vulnerability is the main objective of this thesis. In this context, a sustainability model (RUHET) has been developed for rural heritage in transition, and conservation strategies through vulnerability assessments have been explained. The model was applied to the rural heritage area of Bağpınar in the Melikgazi district of Kayseri province, and the results were presented.masterthesis.listelement.badge Evolution of urban green through social interaction(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Atılgan, Aslıhan; 0000-0003-1785-059X; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıUrban green spaces, which are vital venues for social interaction, have altered substantially over time, from antiquity to the present-day. Contemporary urban green spaces are intended as full and flexible locations rather than depending on a specific physical arrangement with functional limits. Urban green spaces are nowadays not solely utilized for recreational pursuits that put constraints on users (such as sports facilities, child-friendly play areas, sitting places, etc.); rather, they generate dynamic, adaptable landscapes that give opportunity for a range of activities. Thanks to varied activities citizens in the urban might have chance to gather and engage each other. This supplying the urban offers flexible spaces and functions for individuals with varied background. As a consequence, contemporary green spaces draw in a range of individuals, providing everyone the possibility to pick activities they prefer and spend their spare time. In order to comprehend how people, engage socially in urban green spaces, this study analyzes how urban green spaces have altered historically from ancient to present times. Three parks in the contemporary world are investigated through activities owing to the concepts of Jane Jacobs and Jan Gehl. The study also gives projections and design proposals for green areas of the future.masterthesis.listelement.badge EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPUTATIONAL EVALUATION OF ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE OF MULTIPURPOSE MUSIC CLASSROOMS(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2020) ASLAN, Ahmet; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThe efficiency of education in schools is directly related to the quality of communication in classrooms. One of the crucial factors that determines the educational quality in schools is the acoustical performance of the classrooms. Considering the significance of communication in educational spaces, music education is one of the most auditory-related field of education due to its dependence on the ability to hear. The acoustic properties and performance of spaces designated to serve as music classrooms should be specific to the functions of music education. Using the music classroom as a multifunctional space for the teaching of music theory and practicing musical instruments is an application that is frequently practiced in schools. However, the requirements for lectures and practice differ in terms of room acoustics. Therefore, providing function-specific acoustic performance characteristics in multipurpose music classrooms is important for the quality of education. This study investigates the acoustical performance of three multipurpose music classrooms of different schools by experimental and computational methods. The schools are located on the campus of an educational institute in Kayseri. Prior to the experimental and computational studies, the dimensions and spatial organization of classrooms and the properties of building elements and materials are defined in detail. At the experimental stage of the study, measurements are performed to evaluate the background noise levels of the classrooms by comparing the results with NC (noise criterion) curves. Impulse response measurements are conducted in the rooms in orderto derive certain acoustic parameters related to the acoustical performance of multipurpose music classrooms. In the computational studies, three-dimensional models of the classrooms are generated and these models are simulated through Odeon room acoustics software. The compatibility of the acoustical simulations is inspected by comparing the simulation results with the measurement results of room acoustic parameters and the simulation models are calibrated. The data obtained from the studies are analyzed and the acoustical performance of the classrooms are evaluated by comparing the results with reference parameter values for educational institutions defined in the regulations and literature. In order to assess the acoustical problems in multipurpose music classrooms, an identification procedure is developed. The root causes of the acoustical problems are locally diagnosed in the classrooms. According to the findings acquired from the identification studies, solution proposals are discussed to improve the acoustical performances of the classrooms.masterthesis.listelement.badge Exploring the dialog between design and display: Architectural integration of contemporary art exhibitions in Italian institutions(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2024) Ünal, Cansu; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıMuseums are dynamic spaces where architecture and exhibition design interact in significant ways, influencing each other and contributing to a cohesive cultural experience. The relationship between contemporary art exhibitions and museum architecture is crucial in shaping the narrative and the display of art. By exploring the relationship between contemporary art exhibitions and the architecture of museum buildings, a comprehensive analysis is offered of how these elements engage in a dynamic dialogue. Through a detailed comparative analysis of four landmark institutions— Fondazione Prada in Milan, Strozzi Palace in Florence, MAXXI in Rome, and the Venice Biennale's Arsenale—the study investigates the transformative role of architectural innovation in redefining historical structures for contemporary cultural purposes. The research underscores the significance of adaptive reuse in the evolution of museum spaces, examining how the architectural characteristics and spatial configurations of each building influence curatorial strategies and display of art. Focusing on the interplay between museum architecture and the thematic content of art exhibitions, the study highlights how museums serve as active participants in cultural discourse. This research provides insights into the ways contemporary art exhibitions and museum buildings collaboratively construct a hierarchical narrative space, enhancing the aesthetic, cultural, and educational value of art.masterthesis.listelement.badge FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF CHILDREN‘S DOMESTIC SPACES IN TURKEY(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2022) Sezen, Öykü Su; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThis study historically examines the formation and development of children's domestic spaces in Turkey from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1980s. As will be shown, political, cultural, economic, and social turns have influenced the formation of children‘s space in Turkey in this period. The changing meaning of childhood in Europe since the seventeenth century had become the central element of the construction of idealized middle-class nuclear families in the nineteenth century. In the Ottoman society, observable changes in the thoughts and practices about childhood had begun since the nineteenth century. While the shift in the childhood phenomenon in different societies contains similarities and differences, modernization is the key term that I will coin to explain this complex process. This thesis basically explores children's domestic spaces in Turkey by following the traces of the historical roots of the modern family construction and argues that the construction of a child as an individual cannot be read independently of the defined roles of the nuclear family members. In this way, it discovers the historical traces of the idea that the children should have their own living space within the home, which is one of the prominent issues while emphasizing the 'scientific' background of raising children. This thesis tries to set an original spatial reading on the changes in children‘s spaces by analyzing the visual materials, mainly taken from architecture magazines, home and life magazines, of the middle and upper-class houses in Istanbul and Ankara.masterthesis.listelement.badge A housing design assessment approach to improve the quality of life in old age(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2022) Görez, Aslı; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThe increase in the number of the older living independently due to the demographic transformation and changes in the household structure brings the housing design for older adults to the agenda. Depending on the biological, psychological and social losses brought about by the aging process, the relationship of the elderly with housing also changes. Many older adults need help with daily activities that they used to perform easily. Dysfunctional housing, dysfunctional neighborhoods and even dysfunctional cities negatively affect the quality of life of older adults. Domains affecting quality of life, which is a multi-layered concept, are different from other age groups in old age. This difference is also reflected in the housing design. It indicates a strong relationship between housing and quality of life in old age. For houses that can adapt to the changes brought about by aging, it is necessary to clearly define how the relationship between the design considerations required for housing design and the domains of quality of life is established. This constitutes the main problem and research question of the thesis. This thesis discusses the necessary design issues for housing design that increases the quality of life of older adults whose independence increases with the biological, psychological and social losses caused by aging. The thesis is to propose a housing design assessment approach based on the interrelationship of 223 design considerations derived from the comparative analysis of Lifetime Homes Design Guide, Livable Housing Design Guidelines, Universal Design Guidelines for Homes in Ireland, Older Persons' Housing Design: A European Good Practice Guide, EVOLVE Tool - Evaluation of Older People's Living Environments, and Accessibility Guide in Turkey, and 40 domains derived from the comparative analysis of 14 quality of life approaches from pioneers, official institutions and researchers in architecture, gerontology and sociology. This assessment approach includes design considerations to the quality of life of older adults so that they can live independently in their existing or newly designed housing for as long as possible. The approach, which deals with the housing design process in five scales as housing, building, community, immediate surrounding and urban context, has been applied for two houses in Turkey: Retirement Houses in Nilüfer, Bursa and Small Houses in Çukurova, Adana. As a result of the assessment, applications to negatively affect the quality of life of the elderly at all design scales are identified.masterthesis.listelement.badge The impact and development of the concept of modular architecture on housing design(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2024) Shahin, Nader Abou; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıModularity, deeply rooted in ancient art, architecture, and the natural world, has a rich historical legacy. This research endeavours to delineate a historical definition of modularity, objectively compile diverse perspectives and discussions, and explore its modern conceptualization. The primary objective is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the term "module" within the context of architectural history. The study explores the various approaches to modularity and prefabrication adopted globally over the last century. The research examines past and present applications in housing projects, conducts a thorough literature review to trace the historical evolution of modular housing, delves into modularity theories in architectural design, and scrutinizes existing case studies. A theoretical framework defines critical concepts of modularity in architectural design and highlights influential architectural theorists and their contributions to modular design. A selection of modular housing projects is then subjected to in-depth case studies, analyzing successful and less successful examples to discern the factors contributing to effective modular design. Through an exhaustive listing and analysis of modular and prefabricated projects, this thesis aims to shed light on the developmental trajectory of the modular approach in terms of construction systems, materials, and dimensions. While revealing notable advancements, the research underscores existing gaps, particularly in customization for future adoption in housing architecture. Against the backdrop of a global housing crisis, modular architecture emerges as a promising solution aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 11.1—ensuring safe, decent, and affordable housing for all by 2030. This research serves as a foundational exploration into the modular concept in architectural housing, providing insights into its historical evolution and potential future applications.masterthesis.listelement.badge INTERFACES OF URBAN SPACE: A CASE OF FEVZİ ÇAKMAK NEIGHBORHOOD IN KAYSERİ(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2020) YARATGAN, Dilara; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThis research discusses the in-between spaces among the private and public space based on space configuration regarding urban morphology and social interactions. It indicates to how the organization of interfaces affects physical and social relations between building and street in neighborhood. In this scope, the formation and transformation processes of interfaces are investigated for the Fevzi Çakmak Neighborhood in Kayseri, designed by Kemal Ahmet Aru with the consultancy of Gustav Oelsner, after 1960, through the morphological analysis method and observations. From the second half of the twentieth century, based on the socio-economic development, local administrations started to produce new projections to improve the organs of the city such as industrial and residential areas, therefore, planning institutions proposed public-oriented schemes for neighborhood in order to reorganize urban form including public and private spheres through private investments defining the boundaries of these spaces. In a neighborhood, urban form has consisted of different space organizations consisting of social and physical relations. Based on this definition, public and vii private spheres are emerged as the components of space organization within the urban form where constitute the relations between these spaces. The relationship networks based on everyday life is the encounter ground of planning institution and individual. Within this framework, this study reveals that the reciprocal relationship among buildings and street are emerged the interfaces of the public-private spheres defining the concepts that shape up the boundaries of these urban spaces. Given that the main research problem examined on Fevzi Çakmak Neighborhood, it aims to ensure a new understanding of urban space that combines physical and social values in a neighborhood to create a living urban milieu in the city.masterthesis.listelement.badge Library as a third space(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Doğaray, Adem; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThis study deals with the transformation of library spaces with the development of technology and the digitalization of information in the 20th century and aims to interpret and define the conceptual idea, architectural form, and design approach of the 21st century library spaces in transition. Libraries have been playing a vital role in the development of human civilization. For this scope, this thesis studies understanding libraries with their historical background and their new spatial forms and understandings. The evolution of libraries has been searched and key developments that led to extensive change have been examined. It cannot also be defined clearly how this configuration operates in rural mosques rather than the 'selatin' mosques due to the fact that they are more visible in the public space. Hence, 4-single domed, five dome double arcaded mosques of Master Sinan located at different regions of Anatolia have been selected within the scope of this thesis. The mosques examined are; Tekirdağ Rüstem Pasha, Diyarbakır Behram Pasha, İzmit Pertev Pasha and Kayseri Kurşunlu Mosques. In addition to these mosques selection from different regions, more than one were examined analytically thereby further strengthening the basis of comparison. Architectural characteristics of these mosques were examined separately including support system design, changes related with environmental factors, dimensional characteristics, plan design, local effects. The data obtained as a result of these analyses were utilized for identifying the form of the spatial elements as well as their proportions. The parameters obtained from the analytical examinations were combined thus laying the foundations of the modular analysis method. The numerical parameters of the mosques obtained in accordance with this foundation along with the unit module were determined thus completing the modular analyses of these structures. The analyses were carried out for each mosque by first processing the proportional values in one and two dimensions as well as by considering the volumetric forms in three dimensions. Thus, the data acquired at the plan level were controlled at the cross-section and elevation planes in addition to evaluating different impacts. The findings acquired were assessed for all mosques separately and as a whole supported by figures and tables.masterthesis.listelement.badge Quest for new forms of museum space: The politics of archaeology and museum architecture in the 1960-1980 period in Turkey(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2022) Kılıç Aslan, Hilal; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıThis study historically examines the formation and development of museums in Turkey, which are powerful cultural tools of modernity. Within the scope of the thesis, I scrutinize the evolution of museum architecture in Turkey under the influence of political ideologies and archaeological policies from the beginning of the twentieth century until 1980. As will be seen in the following sections, the political, cultural, economic, and social transformations experienced in this period were influential to the formation of museums in Turkey. The concept of museums began to change in Europe from the Enlightenment period onward and, became a central element for nation-states to create a modern and civilized identity in the nineteenth century. Likewise, the preliminary scientific archaeological studies in the late Ottoman period culminated in the Imperial Museum. After the proclamation of the Republic, the efforts to establish a modern museum in Turkey gained momentum along with many other nation-building policies. This thesis explores the establishment and development of museums in Turkey in the period between 1960 and 1980, focusing on the archaeological and cultural policies between political coups and their historical origins. I argue that the making of museums cannot be read independently of historicity, local identity, and role-play in the architectural medium. In this regard, this thesis spatially analyzes two museums in light of two major architectural themes of the period by synthesizing the examples in the architectural journals and state archives and examining these through many concepts found in the academic literature.masterthesis.listelement.badge RE-MAKING OF SPACE: HOW UIGHUR IMMIGRANTS COPED WITH THE UNFAMILIAR(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2020) Can, İlinur; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıHome is at the heart of daily life as a place and a special relationship therewith and, as a notion that grants a unique source to look through the window to the notions of attachment, desire, need and dilemma, is also the space to look into where the same issues brought into individuals’ lives by international migration. The aim of this thesis research is to understand Uighur immigrants’ adaptation process with the new environment and provide an insight into the scholarly work about adaptation and integration processes on the migratory process. Even if those who have left their home have been able to find a new house to live in; transforming that house into a home requires a certain time and experience. So, what necessities that this transformation demands? If the transformation process understood elaborately, will it be manageable in terms of it's the impact on individuals and communities? Hence, this thesis research intends to enlighten the mentioned process by providing an insight into knowledge of an immigrant family’s experiences in making the unfamiliar familiar. To comprehend the ways of how home constitutes the feeling of belongingness in immigrants’ daily lives, thesis research starts with analyzing how migratory theories explained the effects of migration on individuals’ lives. Then, research continues to look through how sense of place portrays its reflection in migratory process. Afterwards, the theoretical knowledge has been gained used for interpreting the experiences of an immigrant family’s during their adaptation process. Finally, thesis study completes its research by revealing the effects of home environment into immigrants’ daily lives, and creates a basis for further discussions.masterthesis.listelement.badge Re-thinking urban vitality of suburban settlements: A case of Kayseri İldem(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Şahin, Aydan; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıUrban vitality is a concept that represents urban life and encompasses many urban concepts such as sustainability, healthy cities, and quality-built environment that can be associated with every urban parameter related to humans. Although urban vitality is associated with the city center and historical areas, studies related to recent suburban are encountered in the literature. This study aims to fill the gap in the literature by addressing the development of suburbs, which have undeniable importance for the life of cities, and associating them with urban vitality. In this thesis, four-building groups representing İldem, which are the dominant patterns in the İldem Suburb of Kayseri city, have been chosen as a case study. According to the suburban conditions, urban vitality conditions have been reconsidered. The new urban vitality conditions include the tools of the quality of the built environment practices and the human dimension, which is the focus of the concept of urban vitality. The urban vitality conditions created for İldem Suburb, these suburbs have been illustrated with maps and plans. Instead of expressing the urban vitality and the built environment with numerical data, have been aimed to describe the life and urban vitality in the suburbs by illustrated them. In this context, reconsidering the basic research problem examined through İldem Suburb. The concept of urban vitality should be addressed not only in city centers but also in suburbs, and urban spaces should support the quality-built environment and social interaction. With the inclusion of digital technologies in the space, hybrid spaces have emerged as a transitional form between physical and virtual space. These transformations in the space have reduced the need for the physical environment to interact with the user. Decentralized distribution channels and web 3.0 have important implications for the idea of virtualization of space. Considering both the distributed network protocol and the transaction structures of cryptocurrencies that do not need physical reality, it is observed that many leading banks and financial institutions have adapted their headquarters and branches to this transformation. It was found meaningful to examine the transformation in bank branches within the scope of the thesis as the area where the transformative effect created by the relationship between finance and technology can be observed the fastest in the user and the place. The digital interfaces of the space, which has been needed by banking transactions since the first periods of its history and shaped accordingly that banking transactions today, have been discussed and it has been tried to predict the way the space will be handled and design decisions in the future.masterthesis.listelement.badge Turkish architectural periodicals as an agent of know-how transfer: 1960-1980(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) Katırcıoğlu, Nida; AGÜ, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Mimarlık Ana Bilim DalıIn this thesis, the role of architectural periodicals published in Turkey in the context of knowledge transfer between 1960 and 1980 is analyzed with textual analysis. One of the functions of architectural periodicals, transferring the changes and developments in the professional field in the world to their readers, has been investigated. The contents of three architectural periodicals that transfer architectural knowledge have been categorized by examining their archives. Thus, data were obtained and interpreted in the related chapters. As a result of the analysis, it was aimed to reveal the qualities of this knowledge transfer. According to the analysis, the contents on hospital design, architectural education, tourism, and urbanism, which were the most prominent topics in the three architectural periodicals examined during the period and which were also on Turkey's agenda, were investigated in detail. The role of the architectural periodicals of the period in terms of know-how transfer and their discursive differences with each other are evaluated. It is discussed how the three periodicals' different characteristics affect their approaches to the agenda and architecture.
