    Willingness to Pay for Renewable Electricity: A Contingent Valuation Study in Turkey

    Renewable energy sources are advised as an important alternative vehicle for dealing with a high rate of energy dependency and global warming. Turkey has also an ambitious national energy goal of minimizing energy import and producing 30% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2023. However, it may not be easy to reach these goals. Willingness to Pay (WTP) thus plays a central role in directing appropriate policies for the country to realize its energy targets. This study reviews previous studies in the same literature as well as examines WTP of Turkish citizens for renewable electricity energy by using a stratified-sample and contingent valuation survey of 2500 households. The results from estimated models show that environmental conscience, membership to an environmental organization, age, education level, gender and income of households are significant determinants of WTP. In addition, the mean value of WTP for green electricity by Turkish households is estimated at around US$ 1 (with the exchange rate 5,3 TL/ US$) per month per household. A number of policy suggestions are further discussed. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Why Is the Lack of Support for Women's Rights Appealing? Considering the Roles of Dispositional System-Justifying Motives and Ambivalent Sexism

    Although the women's rights movement has made various gains in recent years, there are many negative attitudes toward women and their rights in Turkey. This study aimed to examine the relationship between dispositional system-justifying motives and tendency to support women's rights and to test the mediating role of sexist attitudes in this relationship. A total of 530 Turkish adults participated in the online study, with a mean age of 26.20 years (SD = 5.56). The results show that people with high system justification motivation (including dispositional system-justifying motives, high death anxiety, low need for cognition, and high need for recognition) indicated stronger ambivalent sexism toward women (including hostile and benevolent sexist attitudes). In turn, people with ambivalent sexist attitudes had less willingness to support women's rights (considering attitudes toward women's disadvantaged position in society and awareness and support for the Istanbul Convention). © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Sustainable Conservation Through the Interrelations Between Rural Architecture and Life: The Case of Çomakdağ

    PurposeThe paper aims to propose a new approach to the sustainable conservation of rural heritage with the aim of understanding the relations between built environment and society. In the document "Concerning Rural Landscapes as Heritage" by ICOMOS-IFLA, it is argued that there is an interaction between daily life practices and the physical environment for production and cultural activities (ICOMOS, 2017). The main objective of the study is to underline the importance and necessity for this interaction continue for the sustainable conservation of rural areas.Design/methodology/approachThis paper investigates the relationship between the built environment and daily practices in Turkey's & Ccedil;omakdag Region, known for its significant rural architecture and enduring traditions. Through on-site investigation, the study explores the evolution of these relationships across various scales, including buildings, settlements and the region itself. This multi-scale approach aims to identify remaining cultural values and user needs.FindingsTraditional ways of life have undergone a transformation, impacting the interactions between inhabitants and their natural, agricultural and architectural spaces. The primary drivers of these changes are shifts in income sources, technological advancements and infrastructural developments within the settlements. While maintaining a connection between the built environment and daily life practices remains essential, contemporary living conditions and altered routines present challenges to this continuity.Originality/valueThis study builds on previous research on the & Ccedil;omakdag Region. Batur (2010) explored the region's architectural features, including colors and ornamentation. Kurtulus and G & uuml;& ccedil;han (2020) focused on Kizilaga & ccedil; village, examining typical house characteristics. This research offers a new perspective on rural heritage preservation. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining the interrelationship between daily life and the built environment across various scales for sustainable conservation.

    Semi Analytical Study and Calculation of Magnetic Flux Density Created by Rectangularly Shaped Planar Coils With Rounded Corners

    In this paper, magnetic flux density induced by a rectangularly shaped single-turn planar coil with rounded corners is investigated. Starting from Biot-Savart law analytical derivations are obtained and contributions of straight edges and rounded corners of a coil to a flux density at a point in a three-dimensional space are formulated. In the derived formula the magnetic flux density generated by a coil with rounded corners is expressed as a function of the coil's geometrical parameters including start and end points of the roundings together with the center of the circles that contain arcs at the corners and observation point coordinates. Magnetic flux density distribution of rectangular coils with different sizes and roundings at the corners were calculated on distinct planes by using the derived formula. Also, FEM based electromagnetic simulations and measurements were done for the same coils. The results obtained in the analytical calculations, FEM calculations and measurements are in a good agreement.

    Revisiting the Relationship Between Natural Gas Consumption and Economic Growth in Turkey

    The objective of this study is to re-analyze the relationship between natural gas consumption (NGC) and economic growth (GR) for Turkey in a multivariate framework by including capital and labor as additional variables because several papers suggest that a bivariate model can suffer from omitted-variables bias. As compared to the findings of Isik (2010), who previously investigated the short-and long-run relationships between GR and NGC using a bivariate model, we find that the magnitude of the coefficient estimate of NGC become substantially smaller in the long-run and the sign of short-run estimate of NGC shift to negative after accounting for capital and labor as well. In addition to that covered by Isik (2010), we investigate the direction of causality between GR and NGC using the vector error correction model Granger causality approach, and reveal the evidence of feedback hypothesis for Turkey.

    Priceless: Privacy Enhanced AI-Driven Scalable Framework for IoT Applications in Serverless Edge Computing Environments

    Serverless edge computing has emerged as a new paradigm that integrates the serverless and edge computing. By bringing processing power closer to the edge of the network, it provides advantages such as low latency by quickly processing data for time-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Additionally, serverless edge computing also brings inherent problems of edge and serverless computing such as cold start, security and privacy that are still waiting to be solved. In this paper, we propose a new Blockchain-based AI-driven scalable framework called PRICELESS, to offer security and privacy in serverless edge computing environments while performing cold start prediction. In PRICELESS framework, we used deep reinforcement learning for the cold start latency prediction. For experiments, a cold start dataset is created using a heart disease risk-based IoT application and deployed using Google Cloud Functions. Experimental results show the additional delay that the blockchain module brings to cold start latency and its impact on cold start prediction performance. Additionally, the performance of PRICELESS is compared with the current state-of-the-art method based on energy cost, computation time and cold start prediction. Specifically, it has been observed that PRICELESS causes 19 ms of external latency, 358.2 watts for training, and 3.6 watts for prediction operations, resulting in additional energy consumption at the expense of security and privacy.

    Investigating the Tradeoff Between the MMF Distortion and End Turn Length of a 2-Pole Line Start SynRM Performance

    Conventional 2-pole AC machine windings have long end windings and generate harmonics, which increase losses and reduce torque density. This study investigates the performance tradeoff between the level of distortion (THD) in winding magneto-motive force (MMF) and end turn length on a 2-pole line start Synchronous Reluctance Machine (LS-SynRM) machine. A two-stage approach is used, winding and geometry optimization. Various multilayer winding configurations having unevenly distributed number of turns are investigated. First, the percentage of the turns in a coil group is optimized for minimum harmonics and end turn length for all structures. Second, geometric optimization is performed on selected winding configurations. Sixteen different configurations are optimized, and Pareto optimal solutions are obtained. Later, these solutions are graded with a new score-based assessment method to quantify the quality of the results. It is concluded that the designs having lower THD in winding MMF perform better than the designs with shorter end turns in terms of efficiency and torque density.

    How Renewable Energy Consumption and Natural Resource Abundance Impact Environmental Degradation? New Findings and Policy Implications From Quantile Approach

    The EKC literature has ignored the importance of natural resources on environmental degradation. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the impact of renewable energy consumption and the abundance of natural resources on CO2 emissions for a panel of 82 countries by using quantile regressions. Empirical results show that renewable energy consumption reduces CO2 emissions and its effect increases in higher quantiles. The impact on carbon emissions of natural resource abundance is negative at lower quantiles but positive at medium and higher quantiles. Also, the validity of the EKC hypothesis is confirmed for all quantiles, and an increase in trade openness and urbanization increases environmental degradation in lower and middle quantile levels; however, these determinants have negative impacts on carbon emissions at higher quantiles. Policy implications related to this outcome are further discussed in the study.

    Analysis of Oscillator Phase Noise Effect on High Order QAM Links

    In this work, the effect of oscillator phase noise on the bit error rate (BER) for high order QAM communication systems is analyzed. Two high frequency oscillators are designed, built and tested to get real phase noise data, and a BER simulation of a 1024 QAM signal through a super-heterodyne frequency down-converter is implemented using the measured data from the two oscillators as local oscillator sources for the down-converter. A third frequency source is also added to the simulation to visualize the dramatic effect of phase noise on the system BER analysis.
