    The Role of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Resources, Green Innovation, and Fiscal Decentralization in Sustainable Development: Evidence From OECD Countries

    Energy efficiency and renewable resources for sustainable development are novel discussion areas for academics and researchers. Similarly, most developed and emerging countries are experiencing fiscal decentralization to enhance regional development. However, the importance of these sectors in sustainable development is still unclear in the literature. This research investigates the influence of energy efficiency, renewable energy, green innovation, and fiscal decentralization on sustainable development. Using the data for 18 fiscally decentralized OECD countries from 1995 to 2020, the roles of linear and nonlinear green innovation and renewable energy are also considered. This study uses novel moment quantile regression and finds that revenue decentralization, expenditure decentralization, and fiscal decentralization are significant drivers of sustainable development. Additionally, energy efficiency and value-added manufacturing significantly enhance sustainability in the region. However, green innovation and renewables are resources that exhibit a U-shaped association with sustainable development. The robustness of these results is validated via a series of parametric and nonparametric approaches. From the policy perspective, this research suggests improved research and development on renewable energy, green innovation, and energy efficiency could significantly encourage the OECD's journey towards sustainable development. Additionally, subnational governments should be given more fiscal autonomy, which may encourage regional level investments and boost the confidence of clean energy producing sectors to accelerate sustainable regional development.

    The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Satisfaction With Healthcare Services in Türkiye

    Objectives: This study aims at evaluating whether the healthcare system in Turkey performed well or not from the perspective of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: For this purpose, we compare the satisfaction with healthcare services pre-pandemic and during the pandemic. We utilize the Life Satisfaction Survey conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) between 2013 and 2021 and employ probit regression method. Results: The research results do not show any change in satisfaction with healthcare services in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. In addition, the satisfaction with healthcare services of people with health conditions, those without health insurance, and those whose premiums are covered by the state (green card holders) did not decrease during the pandemic period. The analysis results reveal that the satisfaction of people over 65 years old and those having health conditions with healthcare services increased during the pandemic period. Conclusion: When the findings are evaluated as a whole, we can conclude that Turkey performed well from the users' perspective during the pandemic. Public interest summary: This study analyzes the impact of the pandemic on satisfaction with healthcare services in Turkey. To do this, we utilize Life Satisfaction Survey between 2013 and 2021. The regression results indicate that satisfaction with healthcare services has not changed during the pandemic. Moreover, we report an increase in satisfaction scores for elderly and those with health conditions in the pandemic years. We also find satisfaction of people without health insurance, and those whose premiums are covered by the state (green card holders) does not change. Our analysis points Turkey did well in managing pandemic period in terms of healthcare services satisfaction.

    Route Choice to Inform Navigation System Design and Accessibility Analysis for Older Pedestrians: A Scoping Review

    Introduction: Routing systems can support older adults by helping them overcome barriers to walking, promoting independence and well-being. The paths generated by these systems also inform urban accessibility metrics, such as those used in 15-min-city planning. Yet current systems rarely reflect the preferences or constraints of older pedestrians. Empirical studies of route choice can help close this gap by revealing how people trade off different route attributes in real settings. Methods: We conducted a scoping review, following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, of empirical studies analyzing pedestrian route choice among adults. The goal was to identify findings that could inform the design of more age-inclusive routing tools. Results: Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria, eight of which focused exclusively on older adults. Despite varied contexts, three consistent themes emerged: (i) sidewalk quality and manageable gradients; (ii) aesthetic and sensory comfort, including greenery, low noise, and good lighting; and (iii) access to benches, transit, and everyday amenities. However, most studies relied on qualitative methods, limiting direct integration into routing algorithms. Conclusions: Future work should prioritize hybrid qualitative-quantitative designs, large-scale sampling of routes, and fine-grained mapping of micro-barriers. Analyses should account for age, gender, and functional ability, and consider circular leisure walks as a distinct travel pattern. These directions can enhance the usability and equity of routing systems and urban planning frameworks.

    Functional Surfaces of the Future: Integrating Texturing and Coatings for Superior Performance

    Current surface texturing and coating methods exhibit performance improvements but face significant limitations, including inconsistent durability, scalability restrictions, and inadequate integration of their properties. Integrating these approaches can effectively address these challenges. Modern methods, such as laser machining and additive manufacturing, are paving the way for mainstream applications, offering the opportunity to develop new high-performance surfaces in various fields. For instance, combining laser texturing and advanced coating can address durability issues by developing precise patterns and strong adhesion. The combination of surface texturing and coating improves tribological performance and enhances service maintenance by overcoming the limitations of conventional methods. This offers advanced capabilities for various applications, including medical implants and marine environments. In this context, the synergistic application of texturing and coating technologies is expected to be crucial in developing high-performing advanced materials suitable for various applications. This study reviews the progress on synchronizing texturing and coating approaches. Governing mechanisms and controlling factors are identified and discussed. The benefits of applying synergetic approaches to surface performance are recorded. Optimum conditions to realize the best results are determined. Current challenges, emerging trends, and potential solutions to address these issues are proposed.

    Are Shocks to Electricity Consumption Transitory or Permanent? Sub-National Evidence From Turkey

    This is the first study that aims to investigate policy shocks to energy consumption in terms of unit root properties by sector. More precisely, we analyze the stationarity of electricity consumption for 12 regions of Turkey by four sectors in addition to total electricity consumption by region (for a total of 60 cases). We find that 48 cases are non-stationary and 12 cases are stationary. Thus, policies to decrease or stimulate the use of electricity have permanent effects on electricity consumption in 80% of the cases and transitory effects in the rest.     Analysis of the Probability of Failure for Open-Grown Trees During Wind Storms

    Although trees convey important environmental, economic, and sociological benefits on humans and society, they can also cause significant economic and societal disruptions, especially when subjected to wind storms in urban environments. Tools for proper assessment of the risk of these disruptions can be of significant benefit to society. In this research an approach to quantifying the failure probability for trees subject to wind storms is presented and illustrated by application to two specific maple trees in Massachusetts, USA. The approach entails four specific steps: (-1) Random wind time history samples were generated using a modified Ochi-Shin spectrum, (2) these wind time histories were used as loading time histories on finite element models of the example trees in both summer (in-leaf) and winter (leafless), (3) maximum bending moments generated by the random wind time histories were compared to the failure (yield) moment of the tree at 1.4 m above ground, (4) the failure/fragility curves of the trees were estimated by Monte Carlo simulation for a range of average wind speeds and for 1000 independent wind time histories at each wind speed.     Full-Length Effects of the Circular Economy, Environmental Policy, Energy Transition, and Geopolitical Risk on Sustainable Electricity Generation

    The recent global paradigm shift toward sustainable green development necessitates revealing the likely green determinants of sustainable electricity generation in order to derive key policy recommendations for dealing with the global energy crisis. As a result, the current study focuses on the drivers of global electricity generation (EG) and identifies environmental policy (EP), energy transition (ET), geopolitical risk (GPR), and circular economy (CE) as novel determinants. The study employs a battery of advanced econometric techniques, including quantile VAR, quantile slope estimate, and wavelet-based correlation methods, for empirical analysis. The quantile VAR -based connectedness confirms the modeled series' significant interconnectedness. Furthermore, the findings suggest that CE plays an important role in promoting the global EG process, as evidenced by positive effects across quantiles. When the effects of ET and EP are considered, a positive relationship between ET, EP, and EG is discovered, implying that ET and EP are important drivers of electricity generation. Furthermore, GPR has significant and negative effects on EG across most quantiles, indicating that the EG process suffers a significant loss as a result of GPR. Furthermore, the wavelet-based correlation method confirms the significant association between selected series, supporting the preceding findings. In order to achieve sustainable electricity generation, several results-based policies are proposed for local and global authorities.
