Re-Exploring the Kayseri Culture Route by Using Deep Learning for Cultural Heritage Image Classification Cultural Heritage Image Classification by Using Deep Learning: Kayseri Culture Route
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2024-05-25) Kevseroğlu, Ozlem; Kurban, Rifat
The categorization of images captured during the documentation of architectural structures is a crucial aspect of preserving cultural heritage in digital form. Dealing with a large volume of images makes this categorization process laborious and time-consuming, often leading to errors. Introducing automatic techniques to aid in sorting would streamline this process, enhancing the efficiency of digital documentation. Proper classification of these images facilitates improved organization and more effective searches using specific terms, thereby aiding in the analysis and interpretation of the heritage asset. This study primarily focuses on applying deep learning techniques, specifically SqueezeNet convolutional neural networks (CNNs), for classifying images of architectural heritage. The effectiveness of training these networks from scratch versus fine-tuning pre-existing models is examined. In this study, we concentrate on identifying significant elements within images of buildings with architectural heritage significance of Kayseri Culture Route. Since no suitable datasets for network training were found, a new dataset was created. Transfer learning enables the use of pre-trained convolutional neural networks to specific image classification tasks. In the experiments, 99.8% of classification accuracy have been achieved by using SqueezeNet, suggesting that the implementation of the technique can substantially enhance the digital documentation of architectural heritage. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Production of Concrete Compatible Biogranules for Self-Healing Concrete Applications
(EDP Sciences, 2019) Sonmez, Merve; Erşan, Yusuf Çaǧatay
Recently, cost-efficient nitrate reducing biogranules were suggested as an alternative to axenic microbial cultures for development of microbial self-healing concrete. In a marine environment, biogranule containing microbial self-healing concrete showed simultaneous self-healing of cracks and immunisation against rebar corrosion. Yet, information about the production strategy of these biogranules and their compatibility with a mortar matrix is limited. This study presents the production of biogranules and their compatibility with mortar specimens when incorporated at dosages between 0.36% to 4.30% w/w cement (0.25% to 3% of bacteria w/w cement). In-house produced biogranules composed of 70% bacteria and 30% of minerals w/w of biogranule were used for the compatibility tests. In test mortars, calcium formate (CF) and calcium nitrate (CN) were used as regular nutrient admixtures, and nutrient content was set identical in every batch. Up to 2.9% incorporation, biogranules had no significant influence on the fresh properties of mortar. More than 2.9% incorporation caused poor workability and a 26% decrease in 3-Day compressive strength of biomortar specimens. Overall, the biogranules produced are compatible with a cementitious matrix up to 2.9% w/w cement, and even up to 3.6% if early age strength is not essential, which makes biogranules one of the most compatible microbial healing agents among the suggested agents in the literature. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Performance Comparison of IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 802.11b for Vehicle-to Communications in Highway, Rural, and Urban Areas
(2013-11-06) Bilgin, Bilal Erman; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Communication between vehicles has recently been a popular research topic. Generally, the Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Infrastructure-to-Infrastructure (I2I) communications applications can be divided into two sections: (i) safety applications and (ii) nonsafety applications. In this study, we have investigated the performance of IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 802.11b based on real-world measurements and radio propagation models of V2V networks in different environments, including highway, rural, and urban areas. Furthermore, we have investigated the most used V2V mobility models and simulation tools. Comparative performance evaluations show that the IEEE 802.11p achieves higher network throughput, low end-to-end delay, and higher delivery ratio compared to IEEE 802.11b. Overall, our main objective is to describe potential advantages, research challenges, and applications of V2V networks and show how IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 802.11b will perform under different radio propagation environments. © 2013 B. PI-Controlled ANN-Based Energy Consumption Forecasting for Smart Grids
(SciTePress, 2015) Gezer, Gülsüm; Tuna, Gürkan; Κogias, DImitrios G.; Gülez, Kayhan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Kogias, Dimitris
Although Smart Grid (SG) transformation brings many advantages to electric utilities, the longstanding challenge for all them is to supply electricity at the lowest cost. In addition, currently, the electric utilities must comply with new expectations for their operations, and address new challenges such as energy efficiency regulations and guidelines, possibility of economic recessions, volatility of fuel prices, new user profiles and demands of regulators. In order to meet all these emerging economic and regulatory realities, the electric utilities operating SGs must be able to determine and meet load, implement new technologies that can effect energy sales and interact with their customers for their purchases of electricity. In this respect, load forecasting which has traditionally been done mostly at city or country level can address such issues vital to the electric utilities. In this paper, an artificial neural network based energy consumption forecasting system is proposed and the efficiency of the proposed system is shown with the results of a set of simulation studies. The proposed system can provide valuable inputs to smart grid applications. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Optimal Energy Management and Scheduling of a Microgrid in Grid-Connected and Islanded Modes
    (IEEE, 2019-09) Zacharia, L.; Tziovani, L.; Savva, M.; Hadjidemetriou, L.; Kyriakides, E.; Bintoudi, A. D.; Al-Agtash, S.
Microgrids are becoming one of the main components of future smart grids. Ensuring their optimal and stable operation is of crucial importance and can be a challenging task. In this paper, two optimization algorithms are implemented for scheduling the microgrid operation in grid-connected and islanded modes, according to the priorities and objectives in each mode. For achieving an optimal operation at each mode, the proposed scheme is able to shed loads, define the generation level of the photovoltaics and regulate the charging/ discharging level of the Energy Storage System (ESS). The effectiveness of the proposed scheduling is demonstrated through an analytical real-time simulation, where various transitions between the grid-connected and islanded modes are considered. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is able to regulate successfully the energy flows of the microgrid even under various transitions.

Novel Hybrid Design for Microgrid Control
(IEEE Computer Society, 2017-11) Bintoudi, Angelina D.; Zyglakis, Lampros; Apostolos, Tsolakis; Ioannidis, Dimosthenis K.; Al-Agtash, Salem Y.; Martinez-Ramos, J. L.; Martensen, Nis; Tzovaras, Dimitrios
This paper proposes a new hybrid control system for an AC microgrid. The system uses both centralised and decentralised strategies to optimize the microgrid energy control while addressing the challenges introduced by current technologies and applied systems in real microgrid infrastructures. The well-known 3-level control (tertiary, secondary, primary) is employed with an enhanced hierarchical design using intelligent agent-based components in order to improve efficiency, diversity, modularity, and scalability. The main contribution of this paper is dual. During normal operation, the microgrid central controller (MGCC) is designed to undertake the management of the microgrid, while providing the local agents with the appropriate constraints for optimal power flow. During MGCC fault, a peer-to-peer communication is enabled between neighbouring agents in order to make their optimal decision locally. The initial design of the control structure and the detailed analysis of the different operating scenarios along with their requirements have shown the applicability of the new system in real microgrid environments. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

New Proofs of Fejer's and Discrete Hermite-Hadamard Inequalities With Applications
(Ankara Univ, Fac Sci, 2023-06-22) Sekin, Cagla; Tamar, Mehmet Emin; Aliyev, Ilham A.
New proofs of the classical Fejer inequality and discrete Hermite-Hadamard inequality (HH) are presented and several applications are given, including (HH)-type inequalities for the functions, whose derivatives have inflection points. Morever, some estimates from below and above for the first moments of functions f : [a, b] -> R about the midpoint c = (a+b)/2 are obtained and the reverse Hardy inequality for convex functions f : (0, infinity) -> (0, infinity) is established.

Next Generation Networks for Telecommunications Operators Providing Services to Transnational Smart Grid Operators
(SciTePress, 2015) Tuna, Gürkan; Kiokes, George C.; Zountouridou, Erietta I.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Due to the networking expertise, services and technical support of telecommunications operators, Smart Grid (SG) operators prefer telecommunications operators for their communications needs instead of creating private networks. In this paper, the use of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) by telecommunications operators to provide services to transnational SG operators for SG applications is evaluated. NGNs are all IP networks which are packet based and use IP to transport the various types of traffic such as data, voice, video, and signalling over converged fixed and mobile networks. The main idea of transnational SG operators is simple. By creating a huge single infrastructure for energy, more than one countries and nations can be powered at once. For this, it is not needed to install very huge power plants. Simply creating a complex network of power grid connections to each participating country is enough. The results of a set of simulation studies are given to show the efficiency of the NGN-based communication infrastructure for SG applications in terms of important network performance metrics. The results show that NGN-based communication infrastructures can carry packets based on their priority levels and bandwidth allocations in order to meet the specific requirements of SG applications. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
