Prediction of Preference and Effect of Music on Preference: A Preliminary Study on Electroencephalography from Young Women
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019-03-01) Yilmaz, Bulent; Gazeloglu, Cengiz; Altindis, Fatih
Neuromarketing is the application of the neuroscientific approaches to analyze and understand economically relevant behavior. In this study, the effect of loud and rhythmic music in a sample neuromarketing setup is investigated. The second aim was to develop an approach in the prediction of preference using only brain signals. In this work, 19-channel EEG signals were recorded and two experimental paradigms were implemented: no music/silence and rhythmic, loud music using a headphone, while viewing women shoes. For each 10-sec epoch, normalized power spectral density (PSD) of EEG data for six frequency bands was estimated using the Burg method. The effect of music was investigated by comparing the mean differences between music and no music groups using independent two-sample t-test. In the preference prediction part sequential forward selection, k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) and the support vector machines (SVM), and 5-fold cross-validation approaches were used. It is found that music did not affect like decision in any of the power bands, on the contrary, music affected dislike decisions for all bands with no exceptions. Furthermore, the accuracies obtained in preference prediction study were between 77.5 and 82.5% for k-NN and SVM techniques. The results of the study showed the feasibility of using EEG signals in the investigation of the music effect on purchasing behavior and the prediction of preference of an individual.

Performance Analysis of Hamming Code for WSN-Based Smart Grid Applications
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2018) Yigit, Melike; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri; Boluk, Pinar
Many methods have been employed to detect, compare, and correct errors to increase communication reliability and efficiency in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, to the best of our knowledge, no existing study has compared the performance of error control codes by using different modulation techniques in a smart grid communication environment when multichannel scheduling is used. This paper presents a detailed performance evaluation and makes a comparison of different modulation techniques, such as frequency shift keying (FSK), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), binary phase shift keying (BPSK), and offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK), using Hamming codes in a 500-kV line-of-sight substation smart grid environment with multichannel scheduling. A link-quality-aware routing algorithm is used as a routing protocol and a log-normal shadowing channel is employed as a channel model. Simulations are performed in MATLAB and the performance of the Hamming code with various modulation techniques is compared with the results obtained without using any error correction codes for throughput, delay, and bit error rate. The results show that the performance of the Hamming code with OQPSK modulation is better than its performance with other modulation techniques. Moreover, the results show that the performance of Hamming code improves with multichannel scheduling for all modulation techniques.

Modified Self-Adaptive Local Search Algorithm for a Biobjective Permutation Flow Shop Scheduling Problem
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019-07-26) Alabas Uslu, Cigdem; Dengiz, Berna; Aglan, Canan; Sabuncuoglu, Ihsan; Uslu, Çiğdem Alabaş
Interest in multiobjective permutation flow shop scheduling (PFSS) has increased in the last decade to ensure effective resource utilization. This study presents a modified self-adaptive local search (MSALS) algorithm for the biobjective permutation flow shop scheduling problem where both makespan and total flow time objectives are minimized. Compared to existing sophisticated heuristic algorithms, MSALS is quite simple to apply to different biobjective PFSS instances without requiring effort or time for parameter tuning. Computational experiments showed that MSALS is either superior to current heuristics for Pareto sets or is incomparable due to other performance indicators of multiobjective problems.

MicroRNA Prediction Based on 3D Graphical Representation of RNA Secondary Structures
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019-08-05) Sacar Demirci, Muserref Duygu; Demirci, Müşerref Duygu Saçar
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression. While a miRNA can target hundreds of messenger RNA (mRNAs), an mRNA can be targeted by different miRNAs, not to mention that a single miRNA might have various binding sites in an mRNA sequence. Therefore, it is quite involved to investigate miRNAs experimentally. Thus, machine learning (ML) is frequently used to overcome such challenges. The key parts of a ML analysis largely depend on the quality of input data and the capacity of the features describing the data. Previously, more than 1000 features were suggested for miRNAs. Here, it is shown that using 36 features representing the RNA secondary structure and its dynamic 3D graphical representation provides up to 98% accuracy values. In this study, a new approach for ML-based miRNA prediction is proposed. Thousands of models are generated through classification of known human miRNAs and pseudohairpins with 3 classifiers: decision tree, naive Bayes, and random forest. Although the method is based on human data, the best model was able to correctly assign 96% of nonhuman hairpins from MirGeneDB, suggesting that this approach might be useful for the analysis of miRNAs from other species.

Conceptual Research of Movement in Kinetic Architecture
(Gazi Univ, 2018) Ilerisoy, Zeynep Yesim; Pekdemir Basegmez, Merve; Başeğmez, Merve Pekdemir
In this study, the place of movement concept in architectural design is investigated; the possibilities provided to the user by evaluating the varying potentials in architectural design have been discussed as a hypothesis. In this direction, movement concept in kinetic structures applied from the 20th century to today are examined. The paper depends on a qualitative methodology, which is a non-numerical method that depends on constructed cases in order to support research hypothesis. Relations, differences and conceptual partnerships between cases have been revealed by investigating the application points of movement and user participation in the design of these structures that is fast-spreading particularly. From the studied examples, it is determined that the surface movement is preferred, when the movement point is taken into consideration the facades are primarily used, and the most common movement type is the sliding movement. Afterwards, it has been revealed that the different physical properties of the movement and the possibilities that are provided change independently of each other. Even in many cases the movement is preferred due to multiple purposes. The most common purpose is adapting to environmental conditions. As a result, this study, which aims to strengthen the perception of architects, will set an example for the development of kinetic architecture.

All-Polymer Ultrasonic Transducer Design for an Intravascular Ultrasonography Application
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019-07-26) Hah, Dooyoung
Intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS), a medical imaging modality, is used to obtain cross-sectional views of blood vessels from inside. In IVUS, transducers are brought to the proximity of the imaging targets so that high-resolution images can be obtained at high frequency without much concern of signal attenuation. To eliminate mechanical rotation rendered in conventional IVUS, it is proposed to manufacture a transducer array on a flexible substrate and wrap it around a cylindrical frame. The transducer of consideration is a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT). The whole device needs to be made out of polymers to be able to endure a high degree of bending (radius: 1 mm) Bending of the devices leads to considerable changes in the device characteristics, including resonant frequency and pull-in voltage due to geometrical dimension changes and stress induced. The main purpose of this work is to understand the effect of bending on the device characteristics by means of finite element analysis. Another objective of the work is to understand the relationships between such an effect and the device geometries. It is learned that the bending-induced stress depends strongly on anchor width, membrane thickness, and substrate thickness. It is also learned that resonant frequency and pull-in voltage become lower in most cases because of using a flexible substrate in comparison to those of the device on a rigid substrate. Bending-induced stress increases the spring constant and hence increases resonant frequency and pull-in voltage, although this effect is relatively weaker. For most of the device geometries, pull-in voltage is too high for the polymer material to endure. This is the main drawback of the all-polymer CMUT. In order to meet the design goal of 20 MHz resonant frequency, the membrane radius has to be smaller than 7.7 mu m for a thickness of 3 mu m.

A Robust Estimator-Based Optimal Algebraic Approach to Steam Generator Feedwater Control System
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2016) Ablay, Gunyaz
Feedwater control systems are used to maintain the steam generator water level within prescribed narrow limits and to provide constant supply of steam during power demand variations. Current feedwater control systems are often found to be unsatisfactory during startup and low power operations. A robust nonlinear estimator-based optimal algebraic control is developed for feedwater control systems to solve the water level tracking problem during power demand variations. It is shown that the proposed control provides an optimal and robust water level tracking with a single automatic controller over the complete range of power operations in the presence of plant uncertainties and noisy measurements.

A Novel Natural Product, KL-21, Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Cells
(Galenos Yayincilik, 2015-06-05) Gokbulut, Aysun Adan; Yasar, Mustafa; Baran, Yusuf
Objective: The aims of this study were to examine the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of KL-21, a novel plant product (produced by Naturin Natural Products, Izmir, Turkey), on 232B4 chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells and to determine the cytotoxic effects on healthy BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells. Materials and Methods: The cytotoxic effect of KL-21 was determined by MTT cell proliferation assay. Changes in caspase-3 enzyme activity were measured using the caspase-3 colorimetric assay. Changes in mitochondrial membrane potential were determined using the JC-1 dye-based method. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining was performed to measure the apoptotic cell population. Effects of KL-21 on cell cycle profiles of CLL cells were investigated by flow cytometry. Results: We detected time- and concentration-dependent increases in the cytotoxic effect of KL-21 on 232B4 CLL cells. However, we also showed that, especially at higher concentrations, KL-21 was less cytotoxic towards BEAS-2B healthy cells than towards CLL cells. Annexin-V/PI double staining results showed that the apoptotic cell population increased in 232B4 cells. Increasing concentrations of KL-21 increased caspase-3 enzyme activity and induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. KL-21 administration resulted in small increases in the percentage of the cells in the G0/G1 phase while it decreased the S phase cell population up to 1 mg/mL. At the highest concentration, most of the cells accumulated in the G0/G1 phase. Conclusion: KL-21 has a growth-inhibitory effect on 232B4 CLL cells. KL-21 causes apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at G0/G1.

A New Tool for QT Interval Analysis During Sleep in Healthy and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Subjects: A Study on Women
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2013) Kaya, Kemal Alican; Yilmaz, Bulent
By monitoring the Q wave/T wave (QT) interval computed from electrocardiography (ECG) signals during sleep, it is possible to create a link between the ventricular repolarization and sleep stages. In this study, we aimed to find a robust and simple approach to automatically determine the fiducials on each 30-s sleep epoch, such as the Q, R, and T-end points, on long sleep ECG recordings in order to statistically analyze the effect of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep stages on QT intervals. This is a retrospective study in which the ECG data extracted from the polysomnography recordings of 7 healthy women and 5 women with OSA, acquired in a sleep laboratory, were used. Experts annotated the sleep stage and OSA presence information for each 30-s epoch. Later, we visually selected epochs with clean signals from a total of 8324 epochs. On the selected epochs, we determined R peaks on each heartbeat, and by aligning each ECG portion corresponding to a heartbeat using those R points, we computed an average ECG signal for each epoch. On the average ECG signals, we developed a novel approach to find the Q and T-end points. With the help of Bazzet's formula, we computed the corrected QT interval (QTc) values for each epoch using the QT and the median RR interval. Finally, we analyzed the QTc values for the different sleep stages and healthy or OSA groups. We employed statistical approaches such as the Mann-Whitney U test, Freidman's test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. As a result of this study, we found that OSA has a prolongation effect on the total duration of the ventricular depolarization and repolarization. We also observed that the QTc values computed in each sleep stage were significantly different between the healthy and OSA groups. Additionally, we discovered that within the healthy group, the QTc values were distinctive in the different sleep stages.
