    Modularity, deeply rooted in ancient art, architecture, and the natural world, has a rich historical legacy. This research endeavours to delineate a historical definition of modularity, objectively compile diverse perspectives and discussions, and explore its modern conceptualization. The primary objective is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the term 'module' within the context of architectural history. The study explores the various approaches to modularity and prefabrication adopted globally over the last century. The research examines past and present applications in housing projects, conducts a thorough literature review to trace the historical evolution of modular housing, delves into modularity theories in architectural design, and scrutinizes existing case studies. A theoretical framework defines critical concepts of modularity in architectural design and highlights influential architectural theorists and their contributions to modular design. A selection of modular housing projects is then subjected to in-depth case studies, analyzing successful and less successful examples to discern the factors contributing to effective modular design. Through an exhaustive listing and analysis of modular and prefabricated projects, this thesis aims to shed light on the developmental trajectory of the modular approach in terms of construction systems, materials, and dimensions. While revealing notable advancements, the research underscores existing gaps, particularly in customization for future adoption in housing architecture. Against the backdrop of a global housing crisis, modular architecture emerges as a promising solution aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 11.1—ensuring safe, decent, and affordable housing for all by 2030. This research serves as a foundational exploration into the modular concept in architectural housing, providing insights into its historical evolution and potential future applications.

    Müze Mekanı için Yeni Biçim Arayışı: 1960-1980 Döneminde Türkiye Arkeoloji ve Müze Mimarlığı Politikası

    This study historically examines the formation and development of museums in Turkey, which are powerful cultural tools of modernity. Within the scope of the thesis, I scrutinize the evolution of museum architecture in Turkey under the influence of political ideologies and archaeological policies from the beginning of the twentieth century until 1980. As will be seen in the following sections, the political, cultural, economic, and social transformations experienced in this period were influential to the formation of museums in Turkey. The concept of museums began to change in Europe from the Enlightenment period onward and, became a central element for nation-states to create a modern and civilized identity in the nineteenth century. Likewise, the preliminary scientific archaeological studies in the late Ottoman period culminated in the Imperial Museum. After the proclamation of the Republic, the efforts to establish a modern museum in Turkey gained momentum along with many other nation-building policies. This thesis explores the establishment and development of museums in Turkey in the period between 1960 and 1980, focusing on the archaeological and cultural policies between political coups and their historical origins. I argue that the making of museums cannot be read independently of historicity, local identity, and role-play in the architectural medium. In this regard, this thesis spatially analyzes two museums in light of two major architectural themes of the period by synthesizing the examples in the architectural journals and state archives and examining these through many concepts found in the academic literature.

    Bilim Kurgu Sineması Distopyalarında Tekinsiz ve Retrofütüristik Mekan

    Bu çalışma, tekinsiz ve retrofütüristik mekan kavramlarının ev ve kent imgesi üzerindeki etkisine odaklanarak, distopik bilim kurgu sinemasının mimarisine ve kentsel görünümüne ek bir bakış açısı sağlamanın yanı sıra, mimarlığın mekan yoluyla nasıl iletişim kurduğunu ve anlatıya nasıl katkıda bulunduğunu irdeler. Retrofütürizmin, bilim kurgu çalışmaları tarafından sunulan 'gerçekten kaçış' kavramına katkısı ve kurgusal mekandaki rolü genellikle belirsizdir. Ayrıca kurgusal sınıflandırması ve amacı yeterince kuramlaştırılmamıştır. Tez, retrofütürizm için bir sınıflandırma önerir ve amacını açıklar. Ayrıca, yabancılaşmaya, evsizliğe ve tekinsiz mekanlarla ilişkili modern kaygıya dair ek görüş ve referanslar sunar. Literatür taraması yöntemi kullanılarak yapılan araştırma, ütopyadan distopyaya, Modernizm eleştirisinden geleceğin kentinin modern endişesine kadar, mimarlık ve mekanın estetiği ile ilgili olan tekinsiz, yabancılaşma ve evsizlik kavramlarını inceler. Ayrıca, bu kavramların bilim kurgu sinemasında nasıl aktarıldığını tartışır. Tez, anlatı araştırmaları yöntemi kullanılarak, vaka çalışmaları bölümünde seçilen filmlerin mekan okumaları ile devam eder. Filmsel ve mimari mekanların anlatımını gerek gerçek mekanlar gerekse set tasarımları veya bilgisayar destekli imajlar üzerinden olsun, fiziksel ve sosyal yapılarının (mekansal katmanlarının) göstergebilimsel analizleri üzerinden karşılaştırır.
