Transition Towards the Sustainable Development: Unraveling the Effects of Mineral Markets, Belt & Road Initiative, and the Paris Agreement on Green Economic Growth
(Elsevier Ltd, 2024-04) Xia, Xiqiang; Chishti, Muhammad Zubair; Dogan, Eyup
The Agenda 2030 strongly emphasizes implementing effective and equitable measures to address the urgent challenge of global warming, primarily driven by unsustainable fossil-fuel combustion, and one of its core focuses is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) – 8, among others. In light of this, the recent article aims to explore the dynamic nexus between minerals (MNR), the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Paris Agreement (PA), green technologies (GT), and green growth, with a specific focus on developing a policy framework for advancing SDG – 8. The study utilizes daily data and advanced econometric tools such as QVAR, Cross-quantileogram, and wavelet-quantile correlation to examine the diverse effects of these factors on green growth across various time horizons. The short-run analysis reveals that MNR, BRI, and GT discourage green growth under most market conditions, except for a few quantiles that exhibit positive or insignificant relationships. In the medium run, impacts are mixed, with both positive and negative effects observed. However, in the long run, MNR, BRI, and GT consistently demonstrate favorable effects on green growth. For PA, short and medium-run effects are mixed, but medium-run results indicate a predominantly positive impact on green growth. In the long run, PA significantly benefits green growth across the majority of market conditions. Overall, the diversified results suggest that minerals, BRI, the Paris Agreement, and green technologies play a crucial role in stimulating green growth to achieve SDG - 8 in the long term. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Hybrid Renewable Energy to Greener and Smarter Cities: A Case Study of Kayseri Province
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Bekçi, Eyüp; Koca, Kemal
In this study, a hybrid energy system was implemented to fulfill the electricity requirements of the trams operating in Kayseri province. The tram's annual electricity consumption data was acquired on a monthly basis from the local electricity company in Kayseri. Utilizing the obtained data, energy and cost simulations were conducted employing the Homer-Pro program. The primary objective of this investigation is to enhance sustainability while satisfying electricity demands with minimal carbon emissions. Consequently, the established hybrid energy system incorporates renewable energy sources, specifically wind, solar, and biomass energy, with the inclusion of batteries for energy storage. Furthermore, generators and converters are integrated for energy conversion purposes. The study encompasses a detailed cost analysis to identify the most economically efficient hybrid energy system, determined through optimization studies. Through this research, it is anticipated that the implementation of such a system will significantly diminish carbon emissions in Kayseri, contributing to a substantial increase in sustainability. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Green Supplier Selection by Using Fuzzy TOPSIS Method
(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd wspc@wspc.com.sg, 2016-08) Dogan, Ahmet; Söylemez, İsmet; Özcan, Uǧur; Stylemez, Ismet
With the increased environmental consciousness in customers, organizations took upon the task of redesigning their strategic goals in a more environment-sensitive way in order to fulfill their social obligations, to enable sustainability, to gain competitive advantage and to make the world more habitable. Because, the emerging conditions in the 21st century indicate that the traditional criteria -such as price, cost so on for supply chain management, supplier selection and performance measurement of suppliers are no more sufficient and there is the necessity of adding new criteria such as environmental matters. This paper deals with the problem of selecting green suppliers in an organization in Turkey that has operations in the field of accumulator. The aim is to select the greenest of 3 suppliers in Turkey, France and Bulgaria which supply the organization with the plastic material used in the production of accumulator. The problem is solved via fuzzy TOPSIS, which is a multi-criteria decision making method (MCDM), and the results are used to select the greenest supplier. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Generating Linguistic Advice for the Carbon Limit Adjustment Mechanism
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023-10-02) Fidan, Fatma Şener; Aydogan, Sena; Akay, Diyar
Linguistic summarization, a subfield of data mining, generates summaries in natural language for comprehending big data. This approach simplifies the incorporation of information into decision-making processes since no specialized knowledge is needed to understand the generated language summaries. The present research employs linguistic summarization to examine the circumstances surrounding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, one of the most significant regulations confronting exporting nations to the European Union, and will be adopted to support sustainable growth. In this paper, associated with several attributes of the countries and product flow from exporting countries to European countries were defined as nodes and relations, respectively. Before the modeling phase, fuzzy c-means automatically identified fuzzy sets and membership degrees of attributes. During the modeling phase, summary forms were generated using polyadic quantifiers. A total of 1944 linguistic summaries were produced between exporting countries and European countries. Thirty-five summaries have a truth degree greater than or equal to the threshold value of 0.9, which is considered reasonable. The provision of natural language descriptions of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is intended to aid decision-makers and policymakers in their deliberations. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Analyzing the Nexus Between Environmental Sustainability and Clean Energy for the USA
(Springer, 2024-03-22) Dogan, Eyup; Si Mohammed, Kamel; Khan, Zeeshan Anis; BinSaeed, Rima Hassan; Mohammed, Kamel Si
Environmental sustainability is a key target to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, achieving these targets needs tools to pave the way for achieving SDGs and COP28 targets. Therefore, the primary objective of the present study is to examine the significance of clean energy, research and development spending, technological innovation, income, and human capital in achieving environmental sustainability in the USA from 1990 to 2022. The study employed time series econometric methods to estimate the empirical results. The study confirmed the long-run cointegrating relationship among CO<inf>2</inf> emissions, human capital, income, R&D, technological innovation, and clean energy. The results are statistically significant in the short run except for R&D expenditures. In the long run, the study found that income and human capital contribute to further aggravating the environment via increasing CO<inf>2</inf> emissions. However, R&D expenditures, technological innovation, and clean energy help to promote environmental sustainability by limiting carbon emissions. The study recommends investment in technological innovation, clean energy, and increasing R&D expenditures to achieve environmental sustainability in the USA. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
