The intense ground movements caused severe damage to the area's architectural heritage, impacting numerous historic buildings that represent a range of periods, functions, scales, construction techniques, and materials. The regions affected by these earthquakes presented a unique opportunity for analysing the damage to cultural assets, a chance that may not present itself again for some time. It is crucial to collect data on the damage sustained by these structures and to leverage this knowledge for their future preservation. The quality of masonry walls in damaged buildings raises important concerns, particularly regarding the bond patterns and the quality of the binding mortar. Damage has also been observed in vaulted monuments. Many of these structures lack tie systems capable of withstanding lateral forces, which would enhance the structural behaviour during earthquakes. Additionally, past restoration efforts warrant attention, particularly in repair interventions such as reintegration; it has been noted that traditional construction practices were often overlooked. The structural relationship between old and new materials was not fully established, and insufficient measures were taken to reinforce this connection, rendering the repairs less effective. The text highlights the evaluation of earthquake damage at the scale of individual structures, with a particular emphasis on damage types associated with restoration practices implemented in the past. This methodology enables the development of appropriate recommendations to address conservation issues. Studies and news reports show that network failures caused by physical attacks and natural disasters have significant impacts on the optical networks. Such network failures may lead to a section of a network to cease to function, resulting in non-availability of services and may increase the congestion within the rest of the network. Therefore, fault tolerant and disaster-resilient optical networks have grasped the attention of the research community and have been a critical concern in network studies during the last decade. Several studies on protection and restoration techniques have been conducted to address the network component failures. This study reviews related previous research studies to critically discuss the issues regarding protection, restoration, cascading failures, disaster-based failures, and congestion-aware routing. We have also focused on the problem of simultaneous cascading failures (which may disturb the data traffic within a layer or disrupt the services at upper layers) along with their mitigating techniques, and disaster-aware network survivability. Since traffic floods and network congestion are pertinent problems, they have therefore been discussed in a separate section. In the end, we have highlighted some open issues in the disaster-resilient network survivability for research challenges and discussed them along with their possible solutions.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 2Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage: Resilience or Irreparable Loss(Docomomo, 2016) Baturayoğlu Yöney, Nilüfer; Asiliskender, Burak; Özer, Aysegul; Yoney, NiluferThe restoration and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage buildings and complexes, which present structurally and functionally resilient shells, provide us with an interesting dilemma in theory and practice: made of hard wearing materials to house straining functions and to last as long as possible, they are also flexible enough to adapt to almost any new purpose as a container. However, the presence of original machinery and equipment as well as designs based on machine-buildings may reduce the possibilities of adaptive reuse to a museum, where the buildings exhibit themselves, retaining the social, economic, historic and public aspects of cultural heritage as documents. Although originally built on the outskirts of urban settlements, today most industrial heritage complexes occupy central locations in the metropolitan sprawl of major cities. If disused, they are considered obsolete brownfields by local authorities and citizens despite personal and collective memories that may be attached to them. Their conversion into new uses presents major technical difficulties that require expertise in design and implementation. This paper discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage and inherent problems, focusing on the case of the Sümerbank Kayseri Textile Factory (I. Nikolaev, Turkstroj, 1932-1935), which is being transformed into the campus of Abdullah GUI University. The restoration, renovation and adaptive reuse projects for different components of the complex follow similar principles of preservation and sustainability while they are modified to fit the architectural and technological characteristics of each building. Thus, although conversive and easily adaptable, the preservation of industrial architectural heritage becomes a dilemma between disruption and continuity, which the architects have to solve going beyond the possibilities of mere building stock on the one hand and that of the museum on the other. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
