Performance Analysis of Hamming Code for WSN-Based Smart Grid Applications
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2018) Yigit, Melike; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri; Boluk, Pinar
Many methods have been employed to detect, compare, and correct errors to increase communication reliability and efficiency in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, to the best of our knowledge, no existing study has compared the performance of error control codes by using different modulation techniques in a smart grid communication environment when multichannel scheduling is used. This paper presents a detailed performance evaluation and makes a comparison of different modulation techniques, such as frequency shift keying (FSK), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), binary phase shift keying (BPSK), and offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK), using Hamming codes in a 500-kV line-of-sight substation smart grid environment with multichannel scheduling. A link-quality-aware routing algorithm is used as a routing protocol and a log-normal shadowing channel is employed as a channel model. Simulations are performed in MATLAB and the performance of the Hamming code with various modulation techniques is compared with the results obtained without using any error correction codes for throughput, delay, and bit error rate. The results show that the performance of the Hamming code with OQPSK modulation is better than its performance with other modulation techniques. Moreover, the results show that the performance of Hamming code improves with multichannel scheduling for all modulation techniques.

Performance Analysis of Different Modulation Schemes for Underwater Acoustic Communications
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-09) Bahcebasi, Akif; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Tuna, Gürkan
There is an increasing interest in using Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) for various oceanographic applications, such as pollution monitoring, seismic monitoring, environmental data collection, offshore exploration, and tactical surveillance. UASNs rely on acoustic communications; however, the underwater acoustic channel is highly variable and its link quality depends on environmental factors and the locations of the communicating nodes. Therefore, ensuring reliable communication in UASNs is quite difficult. Moreover, path losses and retransmissions lead to the wastage of energy resources and reduce the network lifetime. In this study, we have utilized well-known underwater modulation schemes to analyse and simulate various underwater scenarios with different depth, distance and Bit Error Rate (BER) values in order to make a fair comparison between the modulation schemes and obtain the optimal transmission power. Performance evaluations show that 32-PSK and 16-QAM techniques achieve the minimum energy consumption rates and enhance network lifetime. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

MOL-Eye: A New Metric for the Performance Evaluation of a Molecular Signal
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-04) Turan, Meric; Kuran, Mehmet Şükrü; Yilmaz, Huseyin Birkan; Chae, Chan Byoung; Tuǧcu, Tuna
Inspired by the eye diagram in classical radio frequency (RF) based communications, the MOL-Eye diagram is proposed for the performance evaluation of a molecular signal within the context of molecular communication. Utilizing various features of this diagram, three new metrics for the performance evaluation of a molecular signal, namely the maximum eye height, standard deviation of received molecules, and counting SNR (CSNR) are introduced. The applicability of these performance metrics in this domain is verified by comparing the performance of binary concentration shift keying (BCSK) and BCSK with consecutive power adjustment (BCSK-CPA) modulation techniques in a vessel-like environment with laminar flow. The results show that, in addition to classical performance metrics such as biterror rate and channel capacity, these performance metrics can also be used to show the advantage of an efficient modulation technique over a simpler one. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
