    Application of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics to Structural Cable Analysis

    In this study, a numerical model is proposed for the analysis of a simply supported structural cable. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)-a mesh-free, Lagrangian method with advantages for analysis of highly deformable bodies-is utilized to model a cable. In the proposed numerical model, it is assumed that a cable has only longitudinal stiffness in tension. Accordingly, SPH equations derived for solid mechanics are adapted for a structural cable, for the first time. Besides, a proper damping parameter is introduced to capture the behavior of the cable more realistically. In order to validate the proposed numerical model, different experimental and numerical studies available in the literature are used. In addition, novel experiments are carried out. In the experiments, different harmonic motions are applied to a uniformly loaded cable. Results show that the SPH method is an appropriate method to simulate the structural cable.

    Antecedents of Private-Label Brand Purchase Intention: An Experimental Analysis

    Recent decades have witnessed a growing attention toward private-label brands (PLBs), which also have become of critical importance in emerging markets. Building on this, the main purpose of this empirical research is to investigate the differential influences of individual factors (i.e., socio-demographic aspects, individual differences, and perceptual variables), contextual factors (i.e., distinctive packaging, price promotion, and store image), and attitude toward PLB on PLB purchase intention in an emerging-market context. To serve this purpose, a scenario-based experimental design (N = 351) was used. The findings of the study reveal that prior experience with PLBs, the degree of reliance by consumer extrinsic cues, store image, and attitude toward PLB are precursors of PLB purchase intention, which was found to be inversely related to age, level of purchasing risk, distinctive packaging, and price promotion. This empirical inquiry is expected to provide useful insights into the PLB literature, as it unveils how PLB implications may vary in an emerging-market context.

    Air Gun With Water Bullet

    The gun is a 12 m long inclined pipe of 0.1 m diameter which is connected to a charge of compressed air contained in a 0.5 m3 vessel. The bullet is a slug of water sitting in the upstream lower end of the pipe. The trigger is a hand-operated valve. The target is an elbow at the upstream higher end of the pipe. The smoking gun effect is created by a mist of water coming out of the pipe after each shot. The apparatus is not a toy but meant for serious research. When steam lines are out of operation and/or lack thermal insulation, liquid water collects in the lower parts of the system. System restart may accelerate the water slugs to velocities as high as 50 m/s, and subsequent slug impacts on elbows and orifices may cause pressure peaks with magnitudes only encountered in water-hammer events. The experimental programme consists of water slugs fired towards an elbow with an open end, a closed end, and an orifice end. The varied parameters are air pressure, water mass, outlet condition (open, closed, orifice). Upstream driving pressure and downstream impact pressure are measured in each experimental run. Pressure peaks up to 50 bar have been observed. Experimental results are compared with preliminary predictions from basic one-dimensional models. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
