    The Nexus Between Poverty, Inequality and Environmental Pollution: Evidence Across Different Income Groups of Countries

    Even though the literature has extensively focused on a number of determinants of environmental pollution, it lacks to incorporate the importance of poverty and inequality on the environment. The nexus of poverty-inequality-environment is indeed in line with the agenda of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the existing studies usually rely on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as the proxy for the pollution in their analysis. This study fills the mentioned gaps by investigating the impacts of income inequality and poverty on environmental pollution using ecological footprint (a comprehensive measure of the pollution) in addition to CO2 emissions for 70 countries categorized by income groups. This research employs the dynamic panel system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and the Dumitrescu-Hurlin Granger causality techniques which are strong to several econometric issues that may frequently arise in the estimation procedures. The empirical outcomes show that income inequality and poverty increase carbon emissions and ecological footprint in the entire panel. However, when the panel is split into groups, the results indicate that income inequality mitigates carbon emissions and ecological footprint in high-income group but aggravates them in middle-income group. Though poverty has no significant impact on carbon emissions in high-income group, it raises the levels of carbon emissions and ecological footprint in middle-income group. This study overall implies that income inequality and poverty are significant determinants of environmental pollution. Hence, efforts to abate envi-ronmental degradation should give adequate attention to poverty and inequality in order to attain environmental sustainability.

    The Moderating Role of Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy in Environment-Income Nexus for Asean Countries: Evidence From Method of Moments Quantile Regression

    A vast body of studies estimates the impact of energy consumption on the environment. A typical empirical study either use aggregate energy consumption or apply conventional econometric techniques in modelling the nexus of energy, income and environment. To correct these gaps, the objective of the study is to use renewable and non-renewable energy consumption in analyzing energy-income-environment nexus, and to apply the novel Method of Moments Quantile Regression for ASEAN countries. The outcomes indicate that non-renewable energy consumption stimulate carbon emissions across all quantiles (10th to 90th), the value of the 10th quantile is 0.257 which rises to 0.501 till 90th quantile. Whereas, the renewable energy consumption leads to a decrease in CO<inf>2</inf> emissions across all the quantiles (10th to 90th) but this association is statistically insignificant at higher quantiles from 60th to 90th. The empirical outcomes also verify the presence of the environmental Kuznets curve relationship, which is statistically significant from the middle (30th) to higher (90th) quantiles. Moreover, the finding of panel estimation approaches (FMOLS, DOLS, FE-OLS) also verify the existence of the EKC hypothesis in ASEAN countries. Their finding also describes that 1% increase in non-renewable energy consumption increase CO<inf>2</inf> emission by 0.29%, 0.26% and 0.30% whereas 1% increase in the usage of renewable energy reduces CO<inf>2</inf> emission by 0.17%, 0.15% and 0.17% in case of FMOLS, DOLS and FE-OLS respectively. The empirical results conclude that the government should encourage and subsidize the sources of green energy to tackle environmental degradation.     Production-Based and Consumption-Based Approaches for the Energy-Growth Nexus: Evidence from Asian Countries

    The number of studies that highlight demand-side and supply-side of environmental degradation are quite limited in the literature. The aim of this study is to analyze the energy-growth-environment nexus in cooperation with globalization, urbanization, life expectancy and biocapacity as control variables by using both consumption-based and production-based approaches in an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework for Asian countries over the years of 1971-2014. The empirical results show that globalization improves environmental quality while urbanization, life expectancy, biocapacity and energy consumption increase environmental degradation. While the EKC hypothesis is validated for supply-side analysis, it is not validated for demand-side analysis for the panel of Asian countries. The governments should take initiatives to invest in research and development for the usage, promotion, development and adoption of clean energies. The policymakers should emphasize on the development of urban planning strategies of Asian countries to overcome the negative effects of urbanization on the environment.     Dual Effectiveness of Freezing-Thawing and Sulfate Attack on High-Volume Slag-Incorporated ECC

    This study investigated the dual effect of freeze-thaw cycles with sodium sulfate solution on the performance of non-air-entrained Engineering Cementitious Composites (ECCs) with high volumes of slag. ECC specimens containing three different levels of slag content as a replacement for cement (55%, 69% and 81% by weight of total cementitious material) were exposed to aggressive sodium sulfate solution under freezing-thawing cycles. The load-deflection response associated with ultimate mid-span deflection and flexural strength/stiffness was determined, along with crack development behavior. For comparison purposes, the freezing-thawing resistance (in water) of control ECC specimens was also evaluated. Modified point count method air-void parameters, compressive strength, porosity, water absorption and sorptivity tests were also conducted on the virgin ECC specimens (those not exposed to freezing-thawing cycles in water or aggressive sodium sulfate solution). The test results for the virgin specimens revealed that increased slag content (S/PC) improved the ductility, hardened air content, water absorption, porosity and sorptivity of ECC, while marginally decreasing the compressive and flexural strengths. Freeze-thaw cycles in water or sodium sulfate solution showed that the ductility of ECC specimens decreased remarkably, irrespective of slag content and applied freezing-thawing process. Reduction in mass loss was at minimal levels and no significant behavior change was monitored between the specimens undergoing freeze-thaw cycling in water and the aggressive sodium sulfate solution. Moreover, the decrease in flexural stiffness was more evident than the reduction of the flexural strength for all ECC mixtures. Crown Copyright (c) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Determinants of Ecological Footprint in Mint Countries

    Environmental Kuznets curve literature mostly uses a single indicator as a measure for environmental degradation. However, each single variable captures only a part of the environmental problem, and a reduction in any single measure does not indicate that the environmental problem is diminishing in general. Our study is the first one which investigates the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for the Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey (MINT) countries by employing the ecological footprint as the measure of environmental degradation. Autoregressive distributed lag results indicate that the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid for each of the MINT countries for the period of 1971-2013. The long-run coefficients of our augmented environmental Kuznets curve model show that fossil fuel energy consumption, exports, urbanization, and financial development are the most common causes of anthropogenic pressure on the environment. The effects of exports and imports are negative and positive on environmental degradation, respectively. The long-run coefficients of urbanization, financial development, and renewable energy consumption differ at certain levels for the sampled countries. The results of the analysis point to a number of different policy proposals for each country.
