Intrinsic Graph Topological Correlation for Graph Convolutional Network Propagation
    (Elsevier, 2023-01) Coskun, Mustafa
Recently, Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) and their variants become popular to learn graph-related tasks. These tasks include link prediction, node classification, and node embedding, among many others. In the node classification problem, the input is a graph with some labeled nodes and the features associated with these nodes and the objective is to predict the unlabeled nodes. While the GCNs have been successfully applied to this problem, some caveats that are inherited from classical deep learning remain unsolved. One such inherited caveat is that, during classification, GCNs only consider the nodes that are a few neighbors away from the labeled nodes. However, considering only a few steps away nodes could not effectively exploit the underlying graph topological information. To remedy this problem, the state-of-the-art methods leverage the network diffusion approaches, such as personalized PageRank and its variants, to fully account for the graph topology. However, these approaches overlook the fact that the network diffusion methods favour high degree nodes in the graph, resulting in the propagation of the labels to the unlabeled, hub nodes. In order to overcome bias, in this paper, we propose to utilize a dimensionality reduction technique, which is conjugate with personalized PageRank. Testing on four real-world networks that are commonly used in benchmarking GCNs' performance for the node classification task, we systematically evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology and show that our approach outperforms existing methods for wide ranges of parameter values. Since our method requires only a few training epochs, it releases the heavy training burden of GCNs. Comparative Analysis of Dimensionality Reduction Techniques for Cybersecurity in the SwaT Dataset
(Springer, 2023-07-08) Bozdal, Mehmet; Ileri, Kadir; Ozkahraman, Ali
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the functionality and efficiency of distributed cyber-physical systems, such as city-wide water treatment systems. However, the increased connectivity also exposes these systems to cybersecurity threats. This research presents a novel approach for securing the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) dataset using a 1D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model enhanced with a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The proposed method outperforms existing methods by achieving 99.68% accuracy and an F1 score of 98.69%. Additionally, the paper explores dimensionality reduction methods, including Autoencoders, Generalized Eigenvalue Decomposition (GED), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The research findings highlight the importance of balancing dimensionality reduction with the need for accurate intrusion detection. It is found that PCA provided better performance compared to the other techniques, as reducing the input dimension by 90.2% resulted in only a 2.8% and 2.6% decrease in the accuracy and F1 score, respectively. This study contributes to the field by addressing the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in IoT-enabled water treatment systems, while also considering the practical trade-off between dimensionality reduction and intrusion detection accuracy.

A Novel Feature Design and Stacking Approach for Non-Technical Electricity Loss Detection
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-05) Aydin, Zafer; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Non-technical electricity losses continue to jeopardize economic and social well-being of many countries. In this work, we develop machine learning classifiers that can identify anomalous electricity consumption in Turkey. Starting from weekly electricity usage data, we develop new features that capture statistical and frequency domain characteristics of the customers and their consumption patterns. We analyze the effect of reducing number of feature descriptors through dimensionality reduction and feature selection techniques. To overcome the class imbalance problem, we implement several ensemble methods and compare their prediction accuracy to those of the standard classifiers. The proposed features and combining strengths of different classifiers bring significant improvements on performance metrics, which is demonstrated through detailed simulations on shopping mall sector. We anticipate that advances in this field will contribute to the economies considerably. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
