Experimental Comparative Analysis of Hole-Making Strategies and Cutting Parameters on Flexural Properties and Induced Delamination in S2 Glass and Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Polymers
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2026) Eltahir, Sara Saeed Abdulrahman; Yilmaz, Cagatay; Kesriklioglu, Sinan
Open holes are often required in the applications of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP). However, machining them leads to fiber and matrix damage, reducing the overall quality of composites. The novelty of this study lies in investigating the influence of multiple hole machining strategies under varying feed rates and cutting speeds on the flexural strength, chord modulus and hole quality for S2-Glass (S2-GFRP) and basalt fiber-reinforced polymers (BFRP), followed by three-point bending tests and statistical analysis to determine the optimum machining parameters in terms of flexural properties, delamination, and time efficiency. Findings indicate that conventional milling yields an increase in the flexural strength and chord modulus by 22.2 MPa and 1.9 GPa, respectively, for S2 GFRP. While climb milling performs best for BFRP, enhancing flexural performance by 7.6 MPa and 0.4 GPa. Direct drilling at high feed rate and cutting speed shows the poorest performance. Hole machining at low feed rate using climb milling minimizes delamination at the entrance by 14.8% for S2 GFRP and by 2.7% for BFRP using conventional milling. At the exit, helical milling at a low feed rate suppresses delamination damage by 58.5% and 10.7% for S2 GFRP and BFRP. The most time-efficient method is direct drilling at a feed rate of 0.075 mm/rev and cutting speed of 75 m/min or climb milling with same feed rate, but 25 m/min cutting speed. Within the tested ranges, the optimized drilling setup significantly improved structural performance of S2-GFRP and GFRP, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed experimental-statistical framework.

Process Optimization of Buckwheat Starch Myristic Acid Complex Film
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2026-02) Koca, E.; Oskaybaş-Emlek, B.; Kahraman, K.; Özbey, A.; Aydemir, L.Y.; Oskaybas Emlek, Betul
In this study, it was aimed to develop an edible film from an amylose-lipid complex with better mechanical properties and water vapor barrier. For this purpose, the buckwheat starch (BS) is modified with myristic acid (MA) and the edible film production process was optimized by using central composite design with 4 center points where film forming solution's glycerol concentration, pH, and the temperature of as dependent variable and tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EAB) value and Young's modulus (YM) as response. The models were significant for TS and YM, and the glycerol concentration and temperature had a significant effect on the TS of the films. The edible film produced in validated optimized conditions had better EAB (149%) and TS (1.064 MPa), and lower water solubility (44.7%) and water vapor permeability (0.39 g × mm/m2 × h × kPa) than control film (p < 0.05). There was no significant change in color values, but an increase in opacity (2.14). With the formation of the BS-MA complex, increased surface roughness and more hydrophilic (contact angle = 92.4°) films were obtained. These findings demonstrate that the BS-MA complex film has significant potential for practical applications as an edible film. © 2026 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Biosynthesized Using Fresh Green Walnut Shell in Microwave Environment and Their Anticancer Effect on Breast Cancer Cells
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2022-07-12) Sulak, Mine; Turgut, Gurbet Çelik; Sen, Alaattin
In this study, cerium oxide nanoparticles (CONPs) were synthesized using fresh green walnut shell extract in microwave environment. The morphology and structure of the CONPs were determined using ultraviolet-visible (UV/VIS), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crystal purple staining, Annexin V-FITC detection, RT-PCR, P53, and NF-κB luciferase reporter assays were performed to evaluate the mechanism of action of CONPs in breast cancer cell lines (MCF7). The biosynthesized CONPs showed cytotoxic effects and induced apoptosis in MCF7 cells. Furthermore, CONPs induced P53 expression and suppressed NF-κB gene expression, both of which were confirmed using reporter assays. Based on the present results, it was concluded that CONPs can induce apoptosis by acting on P53 at the transcriptional level and may cause cell death by suppressing NF-κB-mediated transcription. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
