    What Are the Outcomes of Emerging Markets Mergers and Acquisitions? Evidence From Turkey

    Emerging markets have become home to an increasing amount of acquisition activity. However, we do not know much about how domestic and international acquisitions differ in terms of their outcomes. The objective of this study is to compare these acquisitions in the context of an emerging country. To do so, we analysed all acquisitions that occurred in Turkey between 1989 and 2017. We found that domestic acquirers significantly outperformed foreign acquirers of Turkish companies. Our analysis of financial indicators suggests that foreign acquirers are larger in size, have greater leverage and intangibles, and engage in bigger deals. However, growth in leverage, capital expenditures, and administrative and staff expenses are greater in domestic acquirers. Overall, our findings suggest that domestic acquirers are affected more significantly by acquisitions compared to foreign acquirers and based on the financial outcomes of acquisitions there are several differences between these two groups of acquirers. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    A Multi-Channel Distributed Routing Scheme for Smart Grid Real-Time Critical Event Monitoring Applications in the Perspective of Industry 4.0

    Recently, the 4th industrial revolution known as Industry 4.0 has paved way for a systematical deployment of the modernised power grid to fulfil the continuously growing energy demand of the 21st century. This paper proposes a novel channel-aware distributed routing protocol named CARP for CRSNs-based SG applications. In CARP, the proposed cooperative channel assignment mechanism significantly improves the detection reliability and mitigates the noise and congested spectrum bands resulting in reliable and high capacity links for CRSNs-based SG applications. Moreover, to support higher capacity data requirements and to maximise the spectrum utilisation, the proposed multi-hop routing mechanism selects a secondary user relay node rich in spectrum information with longer ideal probability at low interference in the network. The extensive simulation results conducted through EstiNet9.0 reveal that the proposed scheme achieves its defined goals compared to existing routing schemes designed for CRSNs-based applications. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    A Comparison of Proactive and Reactive Environmental Strategies in Green Product Innovation

    Companies are exposed to different kinds of pressures to respond to environmental sustainability issues. It is critical to understand how firms integrate environmental issues into their corporate agendas and how these integration strategies affect corporate performance. This paper investigates factors that motivate firms to adopt environmental marketing strategies and their relative impact on green product innovation performance. A comprehensive conceptual framework is developed and tested that portrays the antecedents and consequences of environmental marketing strategy (EMS). The results show that developing environmental strategies that exceed regulations (proactive strategies) leads to better new product performance than those that only adhere to regulations (reactive strategies). In addition, we find that commitment from top management becomes critical only for proactive strategies, not for reactive strategies. Finally, with regard to the consequences, we show that environmental marketing strategies lead to new product advantage and, ultimately, improved sustainable new product performance. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    A Comparative Analysis of International and Domestic Acquisitions: What Drives Acquirer Competitiveness

    Despite several decades of research in the context of mergers and acquisitions (M&As), an understanding of acquirer competitiveness in international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions remains inconclusive. This empirical study presents a comparative framework to identify a set of intangible factors that differentiate the long-term competitiveness of acquirers engaging in both of these types of acquisitions. Building on the information asymmetry logic, we find that access to accurate information, acquirers’ research and development (R&D) intensity, and similarity between the acquirer and the target play a vital role in determining the overall competitiveness of acquirers. Using a sample of all the M&As that occurred between 1985 and 2007 and applying a matching control methodology, sound comparisons are made to draw conclusions. From a theoretical standpoint, the findings help generalise the importance of intangible factors from the contextual, acquirer-centric, and dyadic angles. From a practical viewpoint, the conclusions enable managers to evaluate their firms’ preparedness for international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
