Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 10Traffic-Adaptive Inter Wavelength Load Balancing for TWDM PON(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2020-02) Memon, Kamran Ali; Zhang, Qi; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Mohammadani, Khalid Hussain; Faheem, Muhammad; ul Ain, Noor; Xin, XiangjunThis study presents a dynamic inter wavelength migration scheme for the optical network units (ONUs) employing linear regression machine learning method to equalize the traffic volume on all the wavelengths in time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM PON). The proposed traffic-adaptive wavelength and bandwidth assignment (TA-WBA) scheme not only decreases upstream traffic delays but also offers 2.3% and 30% less delay on the wavelengths balancing the excessive load and 7% less upstream bandwidth waste, when evaluated against other load-balancing scheme.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 14Insights Into Interface Treatments in P-Channel Organic Thin-Film Transistors Based on a Novel Molecular Semiconductor(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2017-05) Liguori, Rosalba; Usta, Hakan; Fusco, Sandra; Facchetti, Antonio; Licciardo, Gian Domenico; Di Benedetto, Luigi; Rubino, AlfredoOrganic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) were fabricated using a novel small molecule, C6-NTTN, as the semiconductor layer in several different architectures. The C6-NTTN layer was deposited via both vacuum evaporation at different substrate temperatures and via solution-processing, which yield maximum hole mobilities of 0.16 and 0.05 cm(2)/V . s, respectively. Surface treatments of the substrate, insulator, and metal contacts used for OTFT fabrication employing polymer films and different self-assembled monolayers were investigated. In particular, in bottom-gate devices, the insulator surface hydrophobicity was optimized by the deposition of poly(methyl methacrylate) or hexamethyldisilazane, while in the top-gate geometry, pentafluorobenzenethiol was efficiently used to modify the substrate surface energy and to change the contact work function. Atomic force microscopy analysis was exploited to understand the relationship between the semiconductor thin-film morphology and the device electrical performance. The results shown here indicate an inverse proportionality between the mobility and the interface trap density, with parameters depending especially on semiconductor-insulator interfacial properties, and a correlation between the threshold voltage and the characteristics of the semiconductor-metal interface.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Flexible and Ecofriendly Keypad Based on Paper and Pencil(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2023-11) Er, Sahane Firdevs; Kalabey, Nurefsan; Hah, DooyoungPencil-on-paper electronics has gained growing interests as cost-effective, ecofriendly, flexible, and light-weight devices for various applications. In this letter, a flexible keypad employing pencil-on-paper capacitive touch sensors is presented. Spiral-type interdigitated sensors are interconnected via steel threads as well as graphite paths to constitute a ten-button keypad. Passivation of the sensors by means of acrylic paint coating works as protection against deterioration from bending, folding, and extended usage. Backing of the keypad with silicone provides extra durability. Sensor reading is administered by Arduino boards. The same manufacturing method is used to scale up the system to a 44-button keyboard. Functionalities of both systems are successfully demonstrated, and effectiveness of the passivation is verified.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 22ATOM: AI-Powered Sustainable Resource Management for Serverless Edge Computing Environments(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2024-11) Golec, Muhammed; Gill, Sukhpal Singh; Cuadrado, Felix; Parlikad, Ajith Kumar; Xu, Minxian; Wu, Huaming; Uhlig, SteveServerless edge computing decreases unnecessary resource usage on end devices with limited processing power and storage capacity. Despite its benefits, serverless edge computing's zero scalability is the major source of the cold start delay, which is yet unsolved. This latency is unacceptable for time-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications like autonomous cars. Most existing approaches need containers to idle and use extra computing resources. Edge devices have fewer resources than cloud-based systems, requiring new sustainable solutions. Therefore, we propose an AI-powered, sustainable resource management framework called ATOM for serverless edge computing. ATOM utilizes a deep reinforcement learning model to predict exactly when cold start latency will happen. We create a cold start dataset using a heart disease risk scenario and deploy using Google Cloud Functions. To demonstrate the superiority of ATOM, its performance is compared with two different baselines, which use the warm-start containers and a two-layer adaptive approach. The experimental results showed that although the ATOM required more calculation time of 118.76 seconds, it performed better in predicting cold start than baseline models with an RMSE ratio of 148.76. Additionally, the energy consumption and CO2 emission amount of these models are evaluated and compared for the training and prediction phases.Article Citation - WoS: 20Citation - Scopus: 30A Direct Detection Fiber Optic Distributed Acoustic Sensor With a Mean SNR of 7.3 dB at 102.7 Km(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2019-12) Uyar, Faruk; Onat, Talha; Unal, Canberk; Kertelog, Tolga; Ozbay, Ekmel; Ozdur, Ibrahim; Kartaloglu, TolgaIn this work, we present the experimental results of a direct detection phi-OTDR based distributed acoustic sensor system. The system uses two cascaded acousto-optic modulators in order to generate optical pulses with very high extinction ratio and dual photodetector scheme for high dynamic range. The proposed schemes are investigated in detail and their performance enhancement is experimentally verified. Four piezoelectric based fiber stretchers are placed on a similar to 104 km single-mode test fiber at the distances of 1 km, 10 km, 87 km and 102.7 km and used for perturbation tests. The stretchers generated vibration signals which are analyzed to quantify the system performance. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of vibration signals at the monitored distances is measured over the 12-hour recorded data within 34-second time windows considering the multi-point random interference of scattered light and fading phenomena. Using the 12-hour data, SNR histograms at four different locations are generated and mean SNR values are obtained. The signals received from 102.7 km has a maximum SNR of 24.7 dB and a mean SNR of 7.3 dB with a spatial resolution of 15 m. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest-range reported direct detection phi-OTDR based distributed acoustic sensor system.
