Article Spatial Dimension of the Local Phenomenon in Kayseri(Gazi University, Faculty of Engineering Architecture, 2025-12-31) Ozmen, Nihan Mus; Asiliskender, BurakKayseri is in the centre of Anatolia, at the intersection of trade and military routes, and possesses a rich cultural heritage. Throughout its history, the city has hosted various civilizations, developing around a central castle and continuing to expand, particularly after the 19th century. Kayseri has long served as a meeting point for diverse cultures. Within this diversity, families known as locals, whose origins date back to the oldest neighbourhoods within the city walls, have held significant mercantile power. These local families regard themselves as the actual owners of Kayseri and have influenced the city's developmental trajectory. Over time, they have moved outward from the centre to newly developed neighbourhoods, first to the north and then to the east. This study examines the urban development of Kayseri in the 20th century and the spatial mobility of these local families. It employs qualitative methods such as ethnographic observation, oral history interviews, and GIS-based thematic mapping to analyse these movements in a multi-layered way. The study also aims to understand Kayseri's socio-cultural dynamics and historical texture by investigating the role of local families in the city's physical and functional transformations. In this context, it addresses the physical and functional changes in neighbourhoods vacated by these relocations. Article Citation - WoS: 37Citation - Scopus: 39Re-Mapping Urban Vitality Through Jane Jacobs' Criteria: The Case of Kayseri, Turkey(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022-03) Pakoz, Muhammed Ziya; Yaratgan, Dilara; Sahin, AydanThere has been a growing debate in recent decades about the view of city and urban theory. The scope of this discussion has expanded with many different claims about the variable structure of the city and urban society, the boundaries of the urban scale, the nature of the city and urban problems. Jane Jacobs, one of the focal points of these discussions, has offered a different perspective with the approach of urbanism and the principles shaping the city's reconstruction: More important than how cities look is how they work. Therefore, human interactions which create a vibrant environment in cities should be considered to understand the dynamics of cities. Located in the central part of Turkey, the city of Kayseri is a rapidly growing industrial city with approximately 1.4 million population. Despite the fact that the city has a long history, the traditional urban pattern has been largely destroyed via planning decisions and the vast majority of the housing stock in the city has been renewed in the last 40-50 years. This paper examines the city of Kayseri using Jane Jacobs' criteria for what makes a city livable and vibrant. We re-mapped 87 neighborhoods of the city that constitute a continuous urban macroform by using the Kernel Density tool with ArcGIS software, evaluated the "urban vitality" of each neighborhood, and compared outputs with our observations to understand the relevance of Jacobs' views in different contexts. The main findings of the study reveal that not only historical and commercial centers within the city but also several transformed and newly built areas have high urban character values according to Jacobs' criteria. However, the degree of vitality (high, moderate, low, or non-urban), which is measured, may differ from the urban vitality, which is observed by the "naked eyes" in some neighborhoods of the city.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Hybrid Renewable Energy to Greener and Smarter Cities: A Case Study of Kayseri Province(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Bekçi, Eyüp; Koca, KemalIn this study, a hybrid energy system was implemented to fulfill the electricity requirements of the trams operating in Kayseri province. The tram's annual electricity consumption data was acquired on a monthly basis from the local electricity company in Kayseri. Utilizing the obtained data, energy and cost simulations were conducted employing the Homer-Pro program. The primary objective of this investigation is to enhance sustainability while satisfying electricity demands with minimal carbon emissions. Consequently, the established hybrid energy system incorporates renewable energy sources, specifically wind, solar, and biomass energy, with the inclusion of batteries for energy storage. Furthermore, generators and converters are integrated for energy conversion purposes. The study encompasses a detailed cost analysis to identify the most economically efficient hybrid energy system, determined through optimization studies. Through this research, it is anticipated that the implementation of such a system will significantly diminish carbon emissions in Kayseri, contributing to a substantial increase in sustainability. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Evaluation of the Performance of Geotextiles Using Finite Element Analysis in the Settlement Results: A Case Study in Kayseri, Turkey(Korean Geosynthetics Society, 2018) Yalçın, Hakan; Akin, Muge K.; Çabalar, Ali FiratGeotextiles are successfully designated for the reinforcement of soils to solve certain settlement as well as bearing capacity problems in difficult ground conditions. Furthermore, geotextiles are used for the stability of man-made slopes. In this study, the performance of geotextiles for soil improvement is evaluated by considering various geotextile types that have different axial stiffness values. The stiffness values are compared using a finite element method (FEM) based software PLAXIS 2D. As case study, Kayseri Organized Industrial Site in Turkey was chosen for the comparison of these geotextiles for a specific soil profile during analyses. Besides, the FEM based approach is also considered for the settlement, axial force and the effective stress changes during the application of geotextiles. The selected geotextiles are also correlated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. The results indicated that the axial stiffness (EA) can be considered with the effect on the possible soil settlement and axial force values. The settlement values reduced with increase in stiffness of reinforcement. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
