Removal of Heavy Metals from Wastewater Solution Using a Mechanically Activated Novel Zeolitic Material
(Pleiades Publishing Ltd, 2020-11) Uckun, Sukru; Sarikaya, Musa; Top, Soner; Timur, Irfan; Şükrü, Uçkun; Musa, Sarıkaya; Soner, Top; İrfan, Timür
The removal of heavy metals from the wastewater solution using a novel zeolitic material was conceived and experimentally probed. The natural zeolite was ground in a planetary ball mill to increase negative surface charge and amorphization of the material as well as a conventional ball mill. The ground materials were used for the removal of heavy metals from the wastewater solution. The maximum removals were found to be 78% for Pb, 67% for Ni and 54% for Cd by using the conventional milled natural zeolitic material at pH 11. However, 93% of Pb, 72% of Ni and 57% of Cd were removed at pH 9 with the novel zeolitic material milled by a planetary ball mill. It was revealed that the novel zeolitic material produced by a planetary ball mill increased the absorption capacity of the heavy metals and reduced the alkali requirement for pH adjustment. The removal order of heavy metals with the novel zeolitic material is determined as follows: Pb> Ni>Cd.

    Lead Blast Furnace Dust Recycling
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023) Top, S.; Altiner, Mahmut; Kursunoglu, Sait
The recycling of lead (Pb), which has a limited reserve in the world, has great importance in terms of sustainable and efficient use of resources. Currently, more than half of the lead, which is the softest of base heavy metals, is recovered by recycling. In addition to the insulation of the cables and its use as a radiation shield, lead is mostly used in the manufacture of lead-acid batteries (LABs). Generally, lead smelting flue dust, also known as lead smelting fly ashes, formed during the smelting stage in secondary Pb production is fed back into the smelter. However, the impurities contained in this dust and the other required specifications for feeding into the furnace prevent dust from being fed back into the furnaces. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate these by-products with an effective process and to obtain valuable content from them. In this chapter, firstly the characterization of lead smelting flue dust has been investigated. Afterwards, the processes that can be applied to obtain contents such as Pb, Sb, Zn, and As from these materials were compiled from the literature and a comprehensive review study was presented. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Kalsitik ve Dolomitik Kireçtaşlarının Çimentolu Macun Dolgunun Çevresel Davranışına Etkisi
(Chamber of Mining Engineers of Turkey, 2022-03-07) Yılmaz, Tekin; Ercikdi, Bayram
To enhance the strength and stability of cemented paste backfill (CPB), many alkaline materials are utilised as replacement or additive to binder or tailings in CPB. However, the effect of these materials on groundwater pollution of CPB needs to be comprehensively investigated. In this study, effects of the utilization of calcitic and dolomitic limestone (CL and DL) as replacement (10 wt.%) to sulphide mine tailings (S-MT) in CPB mixture on the long-term environmental behaviour of CPB were investigated. For this purpose, CPB samples (CPBs) were subjected to dynamic tank leaching tests over 360-days and the analyses of pH, sulphate (SO4 2-) and heavy metals (HMs) on the leachates were carried out. The effects of mineralogy and microstructure on the environmental behavior of CPBs were also examined by X-ray diffractometry and porosity tests. The findings showed that with the utilization of CL and DL, the pH of leachates remained at alkaline levels and the release of SO4 2- was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the denser microstructure in CPBs of CL and DL contributed to be prevented or be remarkably reduced the HMs-releases (except Cu, Mo and Pb). The results reveal that the mechanical properties of CPB as well as its impact on the groundwater pollution should be carefully evaluated. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
