These molecules were characterized by H-1/C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Morphologically smooth thin-films (similar to 5 nm) of DA-1-DA-4 were deposited onto Au thin films via thermal evaporation and characterized by atomic force microscopy, theta-2 theta X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The work functions of the small molecule coated Au electrodes are shifted to lower energies by similar to 0.1-03 eV, compared to that of the bare Au film measured as a reference. The vapor-deposition of structurally,simple small molecules developed here shows great promise as a facile approach to reduce gold work function for electron injection/extraction between organic semiconductors and Au contacts in various opto-electronic devices. However, one key limitation of TextNetTopics is its scoring component, which evaluates each topic in isolation and ranks them accordingly, ignoring the potential relationships between topics. In addition, the chosen topics may contain redundant or irrelevant features, potentially increasing the feature set size and introducing noise that can degrade the overall model performance. To address these limitations and improve the classification performance, this study introduces an enhancement to TextNetTopics. eTNT integrates two novel scoring approaches: Sequential Forward Topic Scoring (SFTS) and Sequential Backward Topic Scoring (SBTS), which consider topic interactions by assessing sets of topics simultaneously. Moreover, it incorporates a filtering component that aims to enhance topics' quality and discriminative power by removing non-informative features from each topic using Random Forest feature importance values. These integrations aim to streamline the topic selection process and enhance classifier efficiency for text classification. The results obtained from the WOS-5736, LitCovid, and MultiLabel datasets provide valuable insights into the superior effectiveness of eTNT compared to its counterpart, TextNetTopics. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 23Women's Tertiary Education Masks the Gender Wage Gap in Turkey(Springer, 2017-03-10) Tekguc, Hasan; Eryar, Deger; Cindoglu, DilekThis paper investigates the gender wage gap for full-time formal sector employees, disaggregated by education level. The gap between the labor force participation rate of women with tertiary education and those with lower levels of education is substantial. There is no such gap for men. Hence, existing gender wage gap studies for Turkey, where we observe lopsided labor force participation rates by education levels, compare two very different populations. We disaggregate the whole sample by education level to create more homogenous sub-groups. For Turkey, without disaggregation, the gender wage gap was 13% in 2011, and women are significantly over-qualified relative to men on observed characteristics. Once we disaggregate the sample by education level, we show that the gender wage gap is 24% for less educated women and 9% for women with tertiary education in full-time formal employment. Observed characteristics only explain 1 % of this gap in absolute terms. We further disaggregate the data by public and private employment. The gender gap is higher in the private sector. However, women with tertiary education in the public sector are significantly better qualified compared to men, and consequently the adjusted gender wage gap is higher for women with tertiary education in the public sector. Our estimates also indicate a rise in the gender wage gap between 2004 and 2011.Article Use of Laser-Induced Bubbles in Intraocular Pressure Measurement: A Preliminary Study(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2018-11-23) Altindis, Fatih; Ozdur, Ibrahim T.; Mutlu, Sait N.; Yilmaz, BulentThis work investigates the feasibility of a novel approach for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) by analyzing micron-level laser-induced bubble characteristics in the intraocular fluid. We believe that this concept may be used as a non-invasive alternative for measuring a patient's IOP by analyzing the laser-induced bubble volume in the intraocular fluid in the anterior chamber of the eye. The behavior of laser-induced bubbles was examined under differing fluid pressure levels and at differing laser pulse energy levels. An intraocular medium-like environment was imitated and an imaging system was designed in order to capture laser-induced bubbles with their movements. The video recordings of the bubbles were processed using custom software, and the volume of the bubbles was estimated using three different approaches. The bubble volumes were estimated more accurately by using the rising velocity of the bubble rather than its direct radii appearances on the images. An inversely proportional relationship was observed between the laser-induced bubble volume and the fluid pressure. IOP can be measured with a non-invasive technique using laser-induced bubble volume. Deeper and detailed studies, including clinical studies, may lead to the use of lasers for measuring IOP.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 11Understanding the Effect of Symmetry Breaking on Plasmon Coupling From TDDFT(Amer Chemical Soc, 2021-05-26) Alkan, Fahri; Aikens, Christine M.We perform a time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) investigation for the optical properties of nanorod assemblies for different sizes (Ag-10, Ag-59, and Ag-139), interparticle distances, and orientations with a focus on the effect of symmetry breaking via an angle on plasmon coupling. For the model systems, the angle (theta) between the particles is varied between 0 and 180 degrees, where theta = 0 degrees and theta = 180 degrees correspond to symmetric side-by-side and end-to-end orientations of the nanorods, respectively. Our analysis reveals that for a sufficiently large interparticle distance (r > 0.7 nm), where the wave-function overlap between monomers is negligible, TDDFT results agree quite well with the predictions of the dipole-dipole interaction model for the intensity of the different modes of coupled plasmons. For smaller gap distances (0.4-0.5 nm), a charge-transfer plasmon (CTP) mode occurs for the symmetry broken case of the Ag-10 dimer. For the assemblies of larger nanorods, however, the CTP mode is predicted to be less pronounced, especially for the cases where the deviation from the end-to-end geometry is larger than 30 degrees. The orbital overlap and configuration-interaction analyses show that these results are related to the fact that the relative overlap strength between monomeric energy levels is significantly reduced for symmetry-broken orientations of larger nanorods.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 19Understanding and Tailoring Excited State Properties in Solution-Processable Oligo(p-Phenyleneethynylene)s: Highly Fluorescent Hybridized Local and Charge Transfer Character via Experiment and Theory(Amer Chemical Soc, 2021-10-13) Usta, Hakan; Cosut, Bunyemin; Alkan, FahriRod-shaped oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE) offers an attractive p-framework for the development of solution-processable highly fluorescent molecules having tunable hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) excited states and (reverse) intersystem crossing ((R)ISC) channels. Herein, an HLCT oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) library was studied for the first time in the literature in detail systematically via experiment and theory. The design, synthesis, and full characterization of a new highly fluorescent (Phi(PL-solution) similar to 1) sky blue emissive 4',4 ''-((2,5-bis((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))bis(N,N-diphenyl-[1,1'-bi-phenyl]-4-amine) (2EHO-TPA-PE) was also reported. The new molecule consists of a D'-Ar-pi-D-pi-Ar-D' molecular architecture with an extended pi-spacer and no acceptor unit, and detailed structural, physicochemical, single-crystal, and optoelectronic characterizations were performed. A high solid-state quantum efficiency (Phi(PL-solution) similar to 0.8) was achieved as a result of suppressed exciton-phonon/vibronic couplings (no pi-pi interactions and multiple (14 per dimeric form) strong C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions). Strong solution-phase/solid-state dipole-dependent tunable excited state behavior (local excited (LE) -> HLCT -> charge transfer (CT)) and decay dynamics covering a wide spectral region were demonstrated, and the CT state was observed to be highly fluorescent despite extremely large Stokes shift (similar to 130 nm)/fwhm (similar to 125 nm) and significant charge separation (0.75 charge.nm). Employing the Lippert-Mataga model, along with detailed photophysical studies and TDDFT calculations, key relationships between molecular design-electronic structure-exciton characteristics were elucidated with regards to HLCT and hot exciton channel formations. The interstate coupling between CT and LE states and the interplay of this coupling with respect to medium polarity were explored. A key relationship between excited-state symmetry breaking process and the formation of HLCT state was discussed for TPA-ended rod-shaped OPE p-systems. (R)ISC-related delayed fluorescence (tau similar to 2-6 ns) processes were evident following the prompt decays (similar to 0.4-0.9 ns) both in the solution and in the solid-state. As a unique observation, the delayed fluorescence could be tuned and facilitated via small dielectric changes in the medium. Our results and the molecular engineering perspectives presented in this study may provide unique insights into the structural and electronic factors governing tunable excited state and hot-exciton channel formations in OPEs for (un)conventional solution-processed luminescence applications.Article Citation - Scopus: 4Undergraduates’ Attitudes Towards Distance Education and Perceptions of Readiness for E-Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic(Anadolu Universitesi, 2022) Kuloğlu, M. Esad; Yıldız, SevilayThe COVID-19 pandemic, which suddenly took the whole world under its influence, also radically affected the educational environments. This research aimed to examine the attitudes of undergraduates towards distance education, their perceptions of readiness for e-learning, and the relationship between these two variables during the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of which are also felt in higher education. Thus, quantitative research paradigm and correlational design were used in the study. Data were collected online in two weeks via the Attitude Scale towards Distance Learning (ASDL) and E-Learning Readiness Self-Assessment Instrument (ERSI). Using the convenient sampling method, 1422 undergraduate students enrolled in a summer school program at a state university in Turkiye were included in the sample. The findings of the research indicate that the participants’ attitudes towards distance education are moderate, and their perceptions of readiness for e-learning are high-level during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a moderate positive correlation between these two variables. There are also positive, moderate, or strong correlations between the ASDL and some subscales of the ERSI. The findings of the study provide useful information about the distance education carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Tuning Optical Properties of Self-Assembled Nanoparticle Network with External Optical Excitation(American Institute of Physics Inc., 2021-04-20) Şenel, Z.; İçöz, K.; Erdem, T.; Icoez, KutayDNA-driven self-assembly enables precise positioning of the colloidal nanoparticles owing to specific Watson-Crick interactions. Another important feature of this self-assembly method is its reversibility by controlling the temperature of the medium. In this work, we study the potential of another mechanism to control the binding/unbinding process of DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles. We employ laser radiation that can be absorbed by the gold nanoparticles to heat their network and disassociate it. Here, we show that we can actively control the optical properties of the nanoparticle network by external optical excitation. We find out that by irradiating the structure with a green hand-held laser, the total transmittance can increase by ∼30% compared to the transmittance of the sample not irradiated by the laser. Similarly, the optical microscopy images indicate the transformation of the nanoparticle network from opaque to transparent, while the nanoparticles formed a network again after the laser irradiation stopped. The current study aims to achieve increased efficacy by combining lower doses of cisplatin with increasing concentrations of tomatidine in AML cells to increase efficacy.MethodsAnti-proliferative effects of single and combination of cisplatin and tomatidine were assessed via MTT cell viability assay. The Annexin V/Propidium Iodide Double Staining method was used to measure the apoptotic effects of combined tomatidine and cisplatin treatment. Then, Western Blot analysis was performed to measure Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and Caspase-3 protein expression levels.ResultsCisplatin treatment with lower concentrations displayed high cytotoxic effects on AML cells, compared with tomatidine. The combination of the Inhibitory Concentration (IC) 20 value of cisplatin and increasing doses of tomatidine exhibited a significant decrease in cell viability relative to single treatments. The combination index analysis revealed a mild synergistic effect of cisplatin IC20 and varying tomatidine doses. The apoptosis induced when cisplatin was combined with 500 mu M tomatidine by almost 20%, while the percentage of apoptosis in combination with 1 mM tomatidine was measured by 50% for both cell lines. The upregulation of proapoptotic cleaved-PARP (3.2 and 1.08-fold for THP-1 and MOLM-13, respectively) and downregulation in Caspase-3 (0.23 and 0.13-fold for THP-1 and MOLM-13, respectively) was detected.ConclusionsTogether, the study indicated that when tomatidine combined with cisplatin on AML cell lines, a combinatorial anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect is observed. The combination of cisplatin with tomatidine may be a promising approach.
