M.; Kamwa, InnocentTo provide continuity of balancing demand and generation, renewable sources will be more active than today in near future due to the tendency of massive investment on renewable energy sources (RESs) by countries. However, due to the uncertain and intermittent nature of RESs, RESs would create problems on power system operations such as power quality, efficiency, stability and reliability. Owing to having problems with RESs integration, virtual power plant (VPP) has introduced to make this integration smooth without compromising the grid stability and reliability along with offering many other techno-economic benefits. This study reviews structures, types, architecture and operations of VPP along with the status of present implementations worldwide. The types of VPP are introduced in details with the optimisation algorithm used with each type. In addition, VPP is linked with the most of the components in power systems such as distributed generation, active prosumers, transmission system operator and distribution system operator, grid services such as fault ride through, reactive power control as well as with the help of technology such as communications, control and optimisations. This study gives a comprehensive outline of transforming microgrid to VPP that is useful for researchers, consumers, prosumers and utility operators.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Robust Integral Controllers for High-Order Class-D Power Amplifiers(Inst Engineering Technology-IET, 2018-01-24) Ablay, GunyazThis study presents variable structure system theory based robust integral controllers for class-D power amplifiers. These amplifiers are highly efficient switching type power amplifiers with negligible losses. Sensorless and current feedback based integral controllers with sliding modes are designed to provide robust tracking performance with negligible phase delays and distortions. The methods are capable of providing high-quality outputs by maximising gain and minimising the tracking error and phase shifts. The validity, feasibility and robustness performance of the controllers are investigated through circuit realisations.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 29A Hybrid Energy Harvesting Framework for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks Based Smart Grid Applications(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-06) Yildiz, Huseyin Ugur; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Tavli, BülentIn smart grid applications, Wireless Sensor Net-works (WSNs) which consist of battery limited sensor nodes are used on critical equipments of power distribution grids for monitoring purposes. WSN nodes have tight energy constraints hence it is important to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes due to harsh propagation characteristics of smart grid environment. One possible way to reduce the energy consumption is to utilize transmission power control where transmission powers are adjusted according to channel conditions. Another technique is to employ energy harvesting schemes to provide additional power for nodes by using environmental energy sources. Solar and electromagnetic energies are two possible environmental energy sources in outdoor substation environments. Solar energy can be efficiently exploited in a sunny day. On the other hand, electromagnetic energy can be used at any time. In this work, we propose a hybrid energy harvesting model that exploits both solar and electromagnetic energies and develop a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) method to minimize the energy dissipation of sensor nodes. By using the MIP framework, we quantify the impact of the proposed hybrid energy harvesting model as well as transmission power control on the energy saving of nodes. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
