Book Part Citation - Scopus: 2On Their Way Home A Network Analysis of Medieval Caravanserai Distribution in the Syrian Region, According to an 1D Approach(Archaeopress, 2016) Palombini, Augusto; Tavernari, CinziaThe common theory on caravanserais states that they were built at one-day's march distance from each other. Such a pattern may fit some situations, but it does not seem to be present in Syria during the Ayyubid (1174-1260 CE) and Mamluk periods (1260-1517 CE), when most of the region's caravanserais were founded. Caravanserais built during these periods do not seem to follow a precise pattern of distribution along the communication axis of Syria and, as a result, the logic that underlines their distribution remains unclear. The authors face the problem through a GIS-based, network analysis approach that takes into account the building period of each structure and the one-dimensional criterion of distance to its nearest neighbour, also considered in relation to the closeness to urban centres. The results of the analysis are then compared to the historical Syrian caravan networks. So far, such studies related to the body knowledge on financial, technical, and environmental aspects of installation of FPV have not been performed in Turkey while expanding steadily in other countries. In this study, suitable site selection for installation of FPV power plants on three lakes in Turkey was studied by performing geographic information system (GIS) and the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) as multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method. This detailed study revealed that the criterion of global horizontal irradiance (GHI) was determined as the most crucial criterion for the installation of FPV on Beysehir Lake, Lake of Tuz, and Van Lake. Accordingly, renewable energies assumed a critical role, rendering the site selection of these systems very crucial. The present study proposes a novel approach to the site selection of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) plants using a combination of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and geographic infor-mation system (GIS). In the study, the weights of criteria used for selecting solar PV panels are adjusted according to the installed capacity of the PV plant. The land of cost is included as a criterion in the AHP for the first time in PV plant site selection. Besides, a novel method called optimality-based site growing (OBSG) is introduced to further analyze the suitable sites obtained from GIS simulations and to determine the most suitable locations of PV farms. The proposed method is demonstrated with a case study of Turkiye, and the results show that the method effectively determines the most suitable locations for large-scale PV plants.
