Short Term Electricity Load Forecasting: A Case Study of Electric Utility Market in Turkey
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015-04) Ishik, Muhammed Yasin; Göze, Tolga; Ozcan, Ihsan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Aydin, Zafer; Yasin, Muhammed
With the recent developments in energy sector, the pricing of electricity is now governed by the spot market where a variety of market mechanisms are effective. After the new legislation of market liberalization in Turkey, competition-based on hourly price has received a growing interest in the energy market, which necessitated generators and electric utility companies to add new dimensions to their scope of operation: short-term load and price forecasting. The field has several opportunities though not free from challenges. The dynamic behavior of the market price has caused the electric load to become variable and non-stationary. Furthermore, the number of nodes, in which the load must be predicted, is not constant anymore and can no longer be estimated by experts alone. In this competitive scenario, statistical forecasting methods that can automatically and accurately process thousands of data samples are essential. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of short-term load forecasting, how it has received a growing interest in Turkey and to propose an artificial neural network that can forecast the short term electricity load. Through detailed performance evaluations, we demonstrate that our forecasting method is capable of predicting the hourly load accurately. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Predicting customer interest in items is very crucial in direct marketing as it can potentially boost sales. Data mining techniques are developed to predict which items a particular user might be interested in based on their purchase history or explicit feedback in form of ratings or comments. Recently, non-linear and linear methods have been developed for this purpose. In this study, we applied Neighborhood based Collaborative Filtering (CF), Matrix Factorization (MF), Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), Neural Graph CF (NGCF) and Light Graph Convolutional Network (LightGCN) on explicit user product rating data which is acquired from the online gaming and mobile entertainment platform called HADI. We compared the results of node embedding methods in terms of Precision@k, Recall@k and NDCG@k values. SVD and LightGCN showed the best test performance and SVD was significantly superior to LightGCN in terms of training speed. To further increase predictive performance of SVD, we have applied classification with Logistic Regression and Deep Random Forest on user and item embeddings created by the SVD. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Constructing Structural Profiles for Protein Torsion Angle Prediction
(SciTePress, 2015) Aydin, Zafer; Baker, David A.; Noble, William Stafford
Structural frequency profiles provide important constraints on structural aspects of a protein and is receiving a growing interest in the structure prediction community. In this paper, we introduce new techniques for scoring templates that are later combined to form structural profiles of 7-state torsion angles. By employing various parameters of target-template alignments we improve the quality and accuracy of structural profiles considerably. The most effective technique is the scaling of templates by integer powers of sequence identity score in which the power parameter is adjusted with respect to the similarity interval of the target. Incorporating other alignment scores as multiplicative factors further improves the accuracy of profiles. After analyzing the individual strengths of various structural profile methods, we combine them with ab-initio predictions of 7-state torsion angles by a linear committee approach. We show that incorporating template information improves the accuracy of ab-initio predictions significantly at all levels of target-template similarity even when templates are distant from the target. Template scaling methods developed in this work can be applied in many other prediction tasks and in more advanced methods designed for computing structural profiles. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Assessing Employee Attrition Using Classifications Algorithms
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2020-05-15) Ozdemir, Fatma; Cos¸kun, Mustafa; Gezer, Cengiz; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Coskun, Mustafa; Cagri Gungor, V.
Employees leave an organization when other organizations offer better opportunities than their current organizations. Continuity and sustenance and even completion of jobs are crucial issues for the companies not to suffer financial losses. Especially if the talented employees, who are at critical positions in the companies, leave the job, it becomes difficult for the organizations to maintain their businesses. Today, organizations would like to predict attrition of their employees and plan and prepare for it. However, the HR departments of organizations are not advanced enough to make such predictions in a handcrafted manner. For this reason, organizations are looking for new systems or methods that automatize the prediction of employee attrition utilizing data mining methods. In this study, we use IBM HR data set and apply different classification methods, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, J48, LogitBoost, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Naive Bayes, Bagging, AdaBoost, Logistic Regression, to predict the employee attrition. Different from exiting studies, we systematically evaluate our findings with various classification metrics, such as F-measure, Area Under Curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. We observe that data mining methods can be useful for predicting the employee attrition. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

An Optimally Configured and Improved Deep Belief Network (OCI-DBN) Approach for Heart Disease Prediction Based on Ruzzo-Tompa and Stacked Genetic Algorithm
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020) Ali, Syed Arslan; Raza, Basit; Malik, Ahmad Kamran Kamran; Shahid, Ahmad Raza; Faheem, Muhammed Yasir; Alquhayz, Hani Ali; Kumar, Y. J.
A rapid increase in heart disease has occurred in recent years, which might be the result of unhealthy food, mental stress, genetic issues, and a sedentary lifestyle. There are many advanced automated diagnosis systems for heart disease prediction proposed in recent studies, but most of them focus only on feature preprocessing, some focus on feature selection, and some only on improving the predictive accuracy. In this study, we focus on every aspect that may have an influence on the final performance of the system, i.e., to avoid overfitting and underfitting problems or to solve network configuration issues and optimization problems. We introduce an optimally configured and improved deep belief network named OCI-DBN to solve these problems and improve the performance of the system. We used the Ruzzo-Tompa approach to remove those features that are not contributing enough to improve system performance. To find an optimal network configuration, we proposed a stacked genetic algorithm that stacks two genetic algorithms to give an optimally configured DBN. An analysis of a RBM and DBN trained is performed to give an insight how the system works. Six metrics were used to evaluate the proposed method, including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, F1 score, and Matthew's correlation coefficient. The experimental results are compared with other state-of-the-art methods, and OCI-DBN shows a better performance. The validation results assure that the proposed method can provide reliable recommendations to heart disease patients by improving the accuracy of heart disease predictions by up to 94.61%. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Protein İkincil Yapı Tahmini için NR ve UniClust Veri Tabanlarının Karşılaştırılması
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-05) Aydin, Zafer; Kaynar, Oǧuz; Görmez, Yasin
Three-dimensional structure prediction is one of the important problems in bioinformatics and theoretical chemistry. One of the most important steps in the three-dimensional structure prediction is the estimation of secondary structure. Improving the accuracy rate in protein secondary structure prediction depends on computed attributes as well as the classification algorithms. In multiple alignment methods, which are often used to extract an attribute, the calculated values differ according to the database used for the alignment. For this reason, it is important to use a suitable database against which the target proteins are aligned to compute profile feature vectors. In this study, 5 different datasets are generated for the CB513 benchmark with the aid of two different alignment methods and three different databases. The profile features are fed as input to a two-stage hybrid classifier. According to the experimental results, the highest accuracy rate is obtained when UniClust database is used at the first stage of HHBlits alignment to calculate PSSM values and NR database is used at the first stage of HHBlits alignment to calculate structural profile matrices. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Three-dimensional structure prediction is one of the important problems in bioinformatics and theoretical chemistry. One of the most important steps in the three-dimensional structure prediction is the estimation of secondary structure. Due to rapidly growing databases and recent feature extraction methods datasets used for predicting secondary structure can potentially contain a large number of samples and dimensions. For this reason, it is important to use algorithms that are fast and accurate. In this study, various classification algorithms have been optimized for the second phase of a two-stage classifier on EVAset benchmark both in the original input space and in the space reduced using the information gain metric. The most accurate classifier is obtained as the support vector machine while the extreme learning machine is significantly faster in model training. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
