Doctoral Thesis A reliable and secure communication design for underwater sensor networks concerning energy efficiency(Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2023) UYAN, Osman Gökhan; Güngör, Vehbi ÇağrıUnderwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) recently attract scientists because of its wide range of applications and emerging technology. A design challenge in UASN's is the limited network lifetime and poor reliability caused by limited battery supply of sensors and harsh channel conditions in underwater environment. Moreover, sensors might transmit sensitive data that must be disguised against eavesdropping attacks. To maintain a reliability level, packet-duplication and multi-path routing method are suggested, which renders eavesdropping attacks easier. For data security, cryptographic encryption is the most acclaimed method. However, encryption needs extra computations, which consume extra energy and cause a decrease in the network lifetime. As a countermeasure along with encryption against silent listening, fragmenting data and transmitting in pieces over different paths has been proposed. To address these challenges, an optimization framework has been developed to analyze the effects of multi-path routing, packet duplication, encryption, and data fragmentation on network lifetime. However, the solution time of the proposed optimization model is quite high, and sometimes it cannot come up with feasible solutions. To this end, in this study, different regression and neural network methods have been proposed to predict the energy consumptions of underwater nodes as supplementary methods to optimization models. Performance evaluations show that the proposed methods yield remarkably accurate predictions and can be used for energy consumption prediction in UASNs.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Traffic Aware Cyclic Sleep-Based Power Consumption Model for a Passive Optical Network(Wiley, 2022-02-28) Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Faheem, Muhammad; Anwar, Muhammad; Mohammadani, Khalid H.; Idrus, Sevia M.For a network, a power consumption model is an important tool to test the performance of a network process for different traffic loads. In a Passive optical network (PON), the optical network unit (ONU) is responsible for the major power consumption of PON. Both IEEE and ITU have standardized a cyclic sleep process (CSP) for ONU energy conservation. In next-generation PON; TWDM and XGS PON, the ONU power contribution has increased further due to higher number of ONUs and ONU being tunable. Therefore, an accurate power consumption model of the CSP process for energy efficiency studies under different traffic conditions is of prime importance. The existing CSP power consumption models do not depict the CSP process accurately especially the inactivity of the ONU in the asleep and sleep aware states are not taken into account which reduce the accuracy of the model. The proposed inactivity aware model (IAM) overcomes these gaps and very accurately models the CSP process, as evident from the results, which are better than earlier model results and quite close to earlier published simulation results. The model is also validated through a simulation-based study and the simulation results are observed to be very close to the model results with only a 5% deviation.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Sleep-Aware Wavelength and Bandwidth Assignment Scheme for TWDM PON(Springer, 2021-06) Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Faheem, Muhammad; Ashraf, M. Waqar; Arfeen, Asad; Memon, Kamran Ali; Khawaja, AttaullahThe energy efficiency and delay performance of PON are two inversely related phenomena. Higher sleep time of the Optical Network Units (ONUs) results in higher upstream (US) delays due to increased traffic queues during the ONU Asleep state. Although an efficient dynamic bandwidth and wavelength assignment (DWBA) scheme can decrease US delays by minimizing the bandwidth waste and improving the fairness of bandwidth distribution among the ONUs. However, the conventional DWBA schemes are not designed to work with cyclic sleep mode (CSM) and they keep on assigning bandwidth to ONUs even if the ONU is in Asleep state leading to wastage of bandwidth and degraded CSM performance. Therefore, in this work a sleep aware DWBA scheme for TWDM PON is presented to coordinate with CSM mode. It only assign bandwidth to Active ONUs during the guaranteed phase, surplus phase and excess phase allocation phases which minimizes the bandwidth waste and the bandwidth lost at the ONU end. The wavelength switching process is also improved by only considering the Active state ONUs to balance the traffic load on all the wavelengths. The simulation results support our claim as the SA-DWBA scheme on average achieves DWBA schemes due to up to 50% to 65% higher energy savings compared to other due to longer ONU Asleep times. However, the increased upstream delays of all the traffic classes in SA-DWBA scheme remain within the set delay limit of 50 ms.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Seamless Mobile Data Offloading in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Based on IEEE 802.21 and User Experience(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014-04) Tüzünkan, Firat A.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Zeydan, Engin; Ileri, Ömer; Ergüt, SalihThe increase on smartphone usage has brought the burden of data traffic with it. Operators are looking for cost-effective solutions to overcome the problem of 3G infrastructure for high contention traffic scenarios. Several schemes were offered to save the moment, and they brought some extra costs including deploying femtocell or WiMax, LTE, LTE-Advanced systems along with their expensive equipment. On the other hand, operators are expanding their networks with 802.11 technologies such that they can exploit the free-band communication. Meaning the data traffic can handover between WLAN and UMTS interchangeably. By using NS-2 simulator, we implemented IEEE 802.21 WG's Media Independent Handover (MIH) module by combining with Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) values collected from user equipment (UE) and observed a recovered throughput for both medium. We found that there is a tradeoff among energy efficiency, delay tolerance and cost. Furthermore, in this study, we integrated a Quality of Experience (QoE) metric during real-time handover decision process so that with this type of collaborative solution, an operator will be unique in terms of user happiness and heterogeneous network management. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 34Citation - Scopus: 44LRP: Link Quality-Aware Queue-Based Spectral Clustering Routing Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks(Wiley, 2016-12-20) Faheem, Muhammad; Tuna, Gurkan; Gungor, Vehbi CagriRecently, underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) have been considered as a promising approach for monitoring and exploring the oceans in lieu of traditional underwater wireline instruments. As a result, a broad range of applications exists ranging from oil industry to aquaculture and includes oceanographic data collection, disaster prevention, offshore exploration, assisted navigation, tactical surveillance, and pollution monitoring. However, the unique characteristics of underwater acoustic communication channels, such as high bit error rate, limited bandwidth, and variable delay, lead to a large number of packet drops, low throughput, and significant waste of energy because of packets retransmission in these applications. Hence, designing an efficient and reliable data communication protocol between sensor nodes and the sink is crucial for successful data transmission in underwater applications. Accordingly, this paper is intended to introduce a novel nature-inspired evolutionary link quality-aware queue-based spectral clustering routing protocol for UASN-based underwater applications. Because of its distributed nature, link quality-aware queue-based spectral clustering routing protocol successfully distributes network data traffic load evenly in harsh underwater environments and avoids hotspot problems that occur near the sink. In addition, because of its double check mechanism for signal to noise ratio and Euclidean distance, it adopts opportunistically and provides reliable dynamic cluster-based routing architecture in the entire network. To sum up, the proposed approach successfully finds the best forwarding relay node for data transmission and avoids path loops and packet losses in both sparse and densely deployed UASNs. Our experimental results obtained in a set of extensive simulation studies verify that the proposed protocol performs better than the existing routing protocols in terms of data delivery ratio, overall network throughput, end-to-end delay, and energy efficiency.Article Citation - Scopus: 63Energy Efficient and Reliable Data Gathering Using Internet of Software-Defined Mobile Sinks for WSNS-Based Smart Grid Applications(Elsevier B.V., 2019-10) Faheem, Muhammed Yasir; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Raza, Basit; Ashraf, Muhammad Waqar; Ngadi, M. Edge computing is becoming increasingly popular as a result of these benefits, but it comes with challenges such as managing resources efficiently. Researchers are utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to solve the challenge of resource management in edge computing systems. However, existing simulation tools are only concerned with typical resource management policies, not the adoption and implementation of AI models for resource management, especially. Consequently, researchers continue to face significant challenges, making it hard and time-consuming to use AI models when designing novel resource management policies for edge computing with existing simulation tools. To overcome these issues, we propose a lightweight Python-based toolkit called EdgeAISim for the simulation and modelling of AI models for designing resource management policies in edge computing environments. In EdgeAISim, we extended the basic components of the EdgeSimPy framework and developed new AI-based simulation models for task scheduling, energy management, service migration, network flow scheduling, and mobility support for edge computing environments. In EdgeAISim, we have utilized advanced AI models such as Multi-Armed Bandit with Upper Confidence Bound, Deep Q-Networks, Deep Q-Networks with Graphical Neural Network, and Actor-Critic Network to optimize power usage while efficiently managing task migration within the edge computing environment. The performance of these proposed models of EdgeAISim is compared with the baseline, which uses a worst-fit algorithm-based resource management policy in different settings. Experimental results indicate that EdgeAISim exhibits a substantial reduction in power consumption, highlighting the compelling success of power optimization strategies in EdgeAISim. The development of EdgeAISim represents a promising step towards sustainable edge computing, providing eco-friendly and energy-efficient solutions that facilitate efficient task management in edge environments for different large-scale scenarios. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 64Citation - Scopus: 77EDHRP: Energy Efficient Event Driven Hybrid Routing Protocol for Densely Deployed Wireless Sensor Networks(Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd, 2015-12) Faheem, Muhammad; Abbas, Muhammad Zahid; Tuna, Gurkan; Gungor, Vehbi CagriEfficient management of energy resources is a challenging research area in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Recent studies have revealed that clustering is an efficient topology control approach for organizing a network into a connected hierarchy which balances the traffic load of the sensor nodes and improves the overall scalability and the lifetime of WSNs. Inspired by the advantages of clustering techniques, we have three main contributions in this paper. First, we propose an energy efficient cluster formation algorithm called Active Node Cluster Formation (ANCF). The core aim to propose ANCF algorithm is to distribute heavy data traffic and high energy consumption load evenly in the network by offering unequal size of clusters in the network. The developed scheme appoints each cluster head (CH) near to the sink and sensing event while the remaining set of the cluster heads (CHs) are appointed in the middle of each cluster to achieve the highest level of energy efficiency in dense deployment. Second, we propose a lightweight sensing mechanism called Active Node Sensing Algorithm (ANSA). The key aim to propose the ANSA algorithm is to avoid high sensing overlapping data redundancy by appointing a set of active nodes in each cluster with satisfy coverage near to the event. Third, we propose an Active Node Routing Algorithm (ANRA) to address complex inter and intra cluster routing issues in highly dense deployment based on the node dominating values. Extensive experimental studies conducted through network simulator NCTUNs 6.0 reveal that our proposed scheme outperforms existing routing techniques in terms of energy efficiency, end-to-end delay and data redundancy, congestion management and setup robustness. This study analyzes the relationship between energy efficiency, energy research, pollution mitigation, and FinTech by applying two novel methods-the causality test in the frequency domain [11] and the causality test in the time domain (Shi et al., 2018; 2020) on the daily data from June 17, 2016 to November 16, 2021. Empirical results from the frequency domain test report that pollution mitigation temporarily causes energy efficiency only in the short run while energy efficiency Granger causes it in the short, medium, and long run. Furthermore, energy efficiency can predict FinTech in the short, medium, and long-run; on the other way, FinTech Granger causes energy efficiency in the long and medium run, suggesting a permanent causality relationship. Empirical results from the time-varying test show a bidirectional relationship between energy efficiency, and environmental and financial variables, especially with very high significant episodes around the recent pandemic collapse. Policymakers should promote the launch of financial technologies that will provide finance through green bonds for energy efficiency improvements as well as energy efficiency improvements for pollution mitigation. Further policy implications are discussed in the study.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. In the proposed induction system, squircle coils are placed tangentially in a two-dimensional square lattice as opposed to commonly used hexagonal packing. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a simple model setup was constructed using a 3 x 3 coil array along with a steel plate to be inductively heated. To model surface heating, a set of six locations for the plate was designated considering symmetry points. For all of these cases, power dissipated by the system and the plate's transient heating were recorded. Independent from the specific plate position, almost equal heating speeds were measured for the similar levels of dissipated energies in the system. Using full three-dimensional electromagnetic solutions, the experimental results were also verified. The findings indicate that the proposed system is proved to enable energy efficient space-invariant heating in all-surface induction hobs.
