In this investigation, we explore an important boundary condition of ethical leadership by exploring how employees' moral awareness may lessen the need for ethical leadership. Drawing on substitutes for leadership theory, we suggest that when individuals already possess a heightened level of moral awareness, ethical leadership's role in reducing deviant actions may be reduced. However, when individuals lack this strong moral disposition, ethical leadership may be instrumental in inspiring them to reduce their deviant actions. To enhance the external validity and generalizability of our findings, the current research used two large field samples of working professionals in both Turkey and the USA. Results suggest that ethical leadership's positive influence on workplace deviance is dependent upon the individual's moral awareness-helpful for those employees whose moral awareness is low, but not high. Thus, our investigation helps to build theory around the contingencies of ethical leadership and the specific audience for whom it may be more (or less) influential.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 23Women's Tertiary Education Masks the Gender Wage Gap in Turkey(Springer, 2017-03-10) Tekguc, Hasan; Eryar, Deger; Cindoglu, DilekThis paper investigates the gender wage gap for full-time formal sector employees, disaggregated by education level. The gap between the labor force participation rate of women with tertiary education and those with lower levels of education is substantial. There is no such gap for men. Hence, existing gender wage gap studies for Turkey, where we observe lopsided labor force participation rates by education levels, compare two very different populations. We disaggregate the whole sample by education level to create more homogenous sub-groups. For Turkey, without disaggregation, the gender wage gap was 13% in 2011, and women are significantly over-qualified relative to men on observed characteristics. Once we disaggregate the sample by education level, we show that the gender wage gap is 24% for less educated women and 9% for women with tertiary education in full-time formal employment. Observed characteristics only explain 1 % of this gap in absolute terms. We further disaggregate the data by public and private employment. The gender gap is higher in the private sector. However, women with tertiary education in the public sector are significantly better qualified compared to men, and consequently the adjusted gender wage gap is higher for women with tertiary education in the public sector. Our estimates also indicate a rise in the gender wage gap between 2004 and 2011.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Whether and When Did Bitcoin Sentiment Matter for Investors? Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic(Springer, 2023-12-21) Aysan, Ahmet Faruk; Mugaloglu, Erhan; Polat, Ali Yavuz; Tekin, HasanUsing a wavelet coherence approach, this study investigates the relationship between Bitcoin return and Bitcoin-specific sentiment from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2021, covering the COVID-19 pandemic period. The results reveal that before the pandemic, sentiment positively drove prices, especially for relatively higher frequencies (2-18 weeks). During the pandemic, the relationship was still positive, but interestingly, the lead-lag relationship disappeared. Employing partial wavelet tools, we factor out the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths and the Equity Market Volatility Infectious Disease Tracker index to observe the direct relationship between a change in sentiment and return. Our results robustly reveal that, before the pandemic, sentiment had a positive effect on return. Although positive coherence still existed during the pandemic, the lead-lag relationship disappeared again. Thus, the causal relationship that states that sentiment leads to return can only be integrated into short-term trading strategies (up to six weeks frequency).Article Use of Confocal Microscopy to Monitor Structural Transformations in Nanopillars Based on DNA and CdSe/CdZnSe Quantum Dots(Springer, 2023-06-24) Motevich, I. D.Chip system prototypes in the form of nanopillars were created from DNA complexes with CdSe/CdZnSe/ZnS quantum dots immobilized on a plasmonic gold fi lm by the use of vacuum deposition technology and inorganic synthesis. The design and presence of terminal DNA labeled with Cy3 cyanine dyes makes it possible to carry out the hybridization reaction of this terminal strand with complementary DNA and to control the process by variation of the giant Raman scattering (GRS) and the fluorescence signal. Diamond-shaped nano emitter (DNE) structure exhibits four narrow resonant peaks within key absorption windows such as short-wave infrared (SWIR) mid-wave infrared (MWIR), alongside with a wide absorption band in the Non-Transmissive Infrared Range (NTIR) for thermal camouflage applications compatible with radiative cooling. Moreover, the proposed DNE is polarization insensitive as it has an in-plane symmetric design. Using the 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations, we demonstrate the nanoantenna's superior performance characterized by its high absorption rates and tuned effective impedance matching. As of our knowledge, the findings suggest that this is the first time that a MIM structure achieved multiple narrow resonance peaks, located in SWIR and MWIR simultaneously, with a wide absorption range in NTIR. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquid interfacial energy and grain boundary energy of solid Bi have been determined from the observed grain boundary groove shapes. The variation of thermal conductivity with temperature for eutectic solid phase (Bi-4.7 at.%Ag) has been measured. The ratio of thermal conductivity of equilibrated eutectic liquid phase to eutectic solid phase has also been measured with a Bridgman-type growth apparatus at the melting temperature. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquid interfacial energy and grain boundary energy of solid Bi in equilibrium with Bi-Ag eutectic liquid were determined to be (9.2 +/- A 0.6) x 10(-8) K m, (52.7 +/- A 6.3) x 10(-3) J m(-2) and (102.4 +/- A 13.3) x 10(-3) J m(-2), respectively, from observed grain boundary groove shapes.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Theoretical Investigation of Substituent Effects on the Relative Stabilities and Electronic Structure of [BnXn]2- Clusters(Springer, 2021-11-29) Tahaoglu, Duygu; Alkan, Fahri; Durandurdu, MuratIn this study, we provide a theoretical evaluation of relative stabilities and electronic structure for [BnXn](2-) clusters (n = 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). Structural and electronic characteristics of [BnXn](2-) clusters are examined by comparison with the [B12X12](2-) counterparts with a focus on the substituent effects (X = H, F, Cl, Br, CN, BO, OH, NH2) on the electronic structure, electron detachment energies, formation enthalpies, and charge distributions. For the electronic structure and electron detachment energies, substituent effects on boron clusters are shown to follow a very similar trend to the mesomeric and inductive effects (+/- M and +/- I) of pi-conjugated systems, and the most stable derivatives in terms of HOMO/LUMO and electron detachment energies are calculated for CN and BO substituents due to strong -M effects. In the case of formation enthalpies for larger boron clusters (n >= 13), the icosahedral barrier is shown to increase with the halogen and CN substitution, whereas it is possible to reduce the icosahedral barrier for the cases of X = OH and NH2. It is shown that this reduction results from destabilizing the [B12X12](2-) cluster with electronic (+ M) and symmetry effects induced by OH and NH2 ligands.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Variations of Electrical Resistivity and Thermal Conductivity With Growth Rate for the Zn-Al Eutectic Alloy(Springer, 2021-06-24) Marasli, Necmettin; Bayram, Umit; Aksoz, SezenThe Zn-Al-Cu alloy (Zn-5wt%Al-0.5wt%Cu) is solidified with different growth rates (V = 8.45-2087.15 mu m s(-1)) at a constant temperature gradient (G = 3.67 K mm(-1)) using Bridgman-type directional solidification apparatus (BTDSA). The thermal conductivity (K) and electrical resistivity (rho) for the Zn-Al-Cu alloy solidified with the different V values are measured by the longitudinal heat flow method (LHFM) and DC four-point probe technique (FPPT), respectively. The lambda and K decrease with the increasing V, while the q increases with increasing V in the Zn-Al-Cu eutectic alloy. The dependences of rho and K on lambda and V for the Zn-Al-Cu eutectic alloy are obtained as rho = 9.98 x 10(-8)lambda(-0.18), q = 7.03 x 10(-8) V-0.07, K = 110.91 lambda(0.104) and K = 144.59V(-0.040), respectively. The melting enthalpy (DHf) and specific heat difference between solid and liquid phases (Delta C-p) for the Zn-Al-Cu eutectic alloy are determined as 113.89 J g(-1) and 0.172 J g(-1) K-1, respectively, by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 11The Seismic Behaviour of RC Exterior Shear Walls Used for Strengthening of Intact and Damaged Frames(Springer, 2020-04-07) Kucukgoncu, Hurmet; Altun, FatihSeveral strengthening techniques such as steel plate bonding, external post-tensioning, steel bracing, or addition of new structural elements have been widely used to improve the seismic behaviour of structures, which suffer from earthquakes. Especially, adding infill walls and shear walls to the structures are preferred because of the added increase in lateral strength and stiffness. Nevertheless, applications of these techniques have some difficulties in terms of labour, cost, usage, and comfort for occupants. Due to these difficulties, the exterior shear wall, instead of an infill wall, is applied to strengthen structures, especially for public buildings like schools, hospitals, etc. In this study, the seismic behaviours of the exterior shear walls used to strengthen intact and damaged frames were investigated experimentally. For this purpose, reinforced concrete shear walls were positioned in parallel to the exterior sides of the damaged and the intact three-dimensional frames. Both frames were tested under cyclic loads. After the investigation, the hysteresis curve, strength envelope, stiffness degradation, and the energy dissipation capacity were obtained to reveal the seismic behaviour of the strengthening exterior shear walls. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquid interfacial energy, and grain boundary energy of the solid Zn were determined from the observed grain boundary groove shapes. The thermal conductivity of the eutectic solid phase for Zn-0.4 at. pct Al-0.4 at. pct Sb alloy and the thermal conductivity ratio of the liquid phase to the solid phase for Zn-0.4 at. pct Al-0.4 at. pct Sb alloy at eutectic temperature were also measured with a radial heat flow apparatus and a Bridgman-type growth apparatus, respectively.
