Use of Topological Data Analysis in Motor Intention Based Brain-Computer Interfaces
(European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO, 2018-09) Altindis, Fatih; Yilmaz, Bulent; İçöz, Kutay; Borisenok, S.
This study aims to investigate the use of topological data analysis in electroencephalography (EEG) based on brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Our study focused on extracting topological features of EEG signals obtained from the motor cortex area of the brain. EEG signals from 8 subjects were used for forming data point clouds with a real-time simulation scenario and then each cloud was processed with JPlex toolbox in order to find out corresponding Betti numbers. These numbers represent the topological structure of the point data cloud related to the persistent homologies, which differ for different motor activity tasks. The estimated Betti numbers has been used as features in k-NN classifier to discriminate left or right hand motor intentions. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Lifetime Analysis of Energy Harvesting Underwater Wireless Sensor Nodes
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017-05) Erdem, Huseyin Emre; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
The application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in underwater environments poses various challenges. One of the most important problems is the limited lifetime of underwater sensor nodes. Considering how challenging and costly it is to change the batteries of sensor nodes in underwater environments, energy harvesting methods are rendered as a promising solution. In this study, the contributions of energy harvesting via turbine and hydrophone harvesters as well as schedule and trigger driven energy management methods on node lifetime have been analyzed. Performance evaluations have been conducted considering real-life conditions, e.g. flow rates, of Istanbul Bosphorus Strait. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Extracting PRNU Noise From H.264 Coded Videos
(European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO, 2018-09) Altinişik, Enes; Taşdemir, Kasím; Sencar, Hüsrev Taha
Every device equipped with a digital camera has a unique identity. This phenomenon is essentially due to a systematic noise component of an imaging sensor, known as photo-response non-uniformity (PRNU) noise. An imaging sensor inadvertently introduces this noise pattern to all media captured by that imaging sensor. The procedure for extracting PRNU noise has been well studied in the context of photographic images, however, its extension to video has so far been neglected. In this work, considering H.264 coding standard, we describe a procedure to extract sensor fingerprint from non-stabilized videos. The crux of our method is to remove a filtering procedure applied at the decoder to reduce blockiness and to use macroblocks selectively when estimating PRNU noise pattern. Results show that our method has a potential to improve matching performance significantly. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Computer vision methods used for night-time fire detection are limited. Existing works are for detection of distant night fires recorded from watch towers. In this paper, detection of short to mid-range night fires from video cameras are aimed. Flames in short distance flicker, grow and move more rapidly compared to ones in long distance. Features obtained by taking advantage of these distinctions let us detect fire over 90% accuracy on average in videos containing deceptive light sources like common city lights and headlights of vehicles. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Emotiv Epoc Headset is a portable and low-cost device. In this study, Emotiv Epoc headset was used in order to obtain real-time gyro and EEG signals. The aim of this study was to control a robotic car in real-time by using head movement and opening and closing of the eyes. The maximum and minimum amplitude of the gyro signal, and the ratios of the beta waves of O1 and O2 channel to alpha waves of the same channels were used as threshold values. These threshold values were used to determine the direction of the robotic car. Because of its low-cost and easy implementation, Arduino Uno was used to manage the robotic car. This study has shown that brain waves and head movements can control a device in real time. This system has the potential to be used in neurofeedback and brain-computer interface applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the state of the art wireless mobile broadband technology. It makes use of the OFDM technology to offer high speed and provides the system resources both in time and frequency domain. A scheduling algorithm running on the base station holds the allocation of these resources. In this paper, the performance of existing downlink scheduling algorithms has been investigated in two ways. First, the performance of the algorithms has been investigated in terms of throughput and fairness metrics. Second, a new quality of service-aware (QoS-aware) fairness criterion, which accepts that the system is fair if it can provide the users with the network traffic speeds that they demand, has been proposed and evaluated. In addition, a novel QoS-aware downlink-scheduling algorithm, which increases the QoS-aware fairness and overall throughput of the edge users, has been proposed. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Nöromüsküler Hastalıkların Ortak MikroRNA ve Yolaklarının İn Siliko Yöntemlerle Belirlenmesi
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-04) Ünlü Yazici, Miray; Aksu-Menges, Evrim; Akkaya-Ulum, Yeliz Z.; Balcihayta, Burcu; Bakir-Güngör, Burcu
Neuromuscular disorders (NMD) are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the loss of function of the peripheral nerves and muscles. However, there are no effective and widespread therapeutic approaches to prevent or delay the progression of these disease types. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) which cause significant changes in gene expression by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), are known to have an effect on disease mechanisms. In this study, by integrating different bioinformatics methods, we aim to find miRNAs, target genes and pathways related to a group of neuromuscular diseases. For this purpose, we determined 17 miRNAs that show significant expression changes between patient and healthy groups; predicted target genes of these miRNAs; and identified affected pathways using subnetwork discovery, functional enrichment based algorithms. In our study, we integrated different in-silico approaches that proceed in topdown manner or bottom-up manner. The identified candidate miRNAs, genes and pathways, which could help to explain neuromuscular disease development mechanisms, are now under investigation in wet-lab. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Representing approximately 70% to 80% of thyroid cancers, papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancers. PTC is seen in all age groups, but it is seen more frequently in women than in men. Detection of biomarker proteins of papillary thyroid cancinoma plays an important role in the diagnosis of the disease. In this study, we aim to find target genes and pathways that are associated with papillar thyroid carcinoma, by integrating different bioinformatics methods. For this purpose, usingin-silico methodologies, candidate genes and pathways that could explain disease development mechanisms are identified. Throughout this study, firstly we identified differentially expressed genes as the amount of their protein product differ between patient and healthy groups. Secondly, by using active subnetworks search algorithms, topologic analyses and functional enrichment tests, candidate proteins, which could be thought as PTC biomarkers, and affected pathways are identified. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Blockchain is a reliable and transparent structure formed by distributing the data in blocks connected to each other using various cryptography techniques to other points on the network. The difference from the existing database operations is that the authorities and responsibilities do not exist in a single central authority, and that these powers and responsibilities are distributed to the other nodes in the network and the assignment is shared. To provide this, peer to peer network infrastructure is used. However, at this stage, authentication in terms of security is one of the basic security mechanisms. In this study, a user management system which can be integrated with more reliable and current technologies, which is thought to be the solution to speed problems in blockchain, is proposed. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
