In this investigation, we explore an important boundary condition of ethical leadership by exploring how employees' moral awareness may lessen the need for ethical leadership. Drawing on substitutes for leadership theory, we suggest that when individuals already possess a heightened level of moral awareness, ethical leadership's role in reducing deviant actions may be reduced. However, when individuals lack this strong moral disposition, ethical leadership may be instrumental in inspiring them to reduce their deviant actions. To enhance the external validity and generalizability of our findings, the current research used two large field samples of working professionals in both Turkey and the USA. Results suggest that ethical leadership's positive influence on workplace deviance is dependent upon the individual's moral awareness-helpful for those employees whose moral awareness is low, but not high. Thus, our investigation helps to build theory around the contingencies of ethical leadership and the specific audience for whom it may be more (or less) influential.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 23Women's Tertiary Education Masks the Gender Wage Gap in Turkey(Springer, 2017-03-10) Tekguc, Hasan; Eryar, Deger; Cindoglu, DilekThis paper investigates the gender wage gap for full-time formal sector employees, disaggregated by education level. The gap between the labor force participation rate of women with tertiary education and those with lower levels of education is substantial. There is no such gap for men. Hence, existing gender wage gap studies for Turkey, where we observe lopsided labor force participation rates by education levels, compare two very different populations. We disaggregate the whole sample by education level to create more homogenous sub-groups. For Turkey, without disaggregation, the gender wage gap was 13% in 2011, and women are significantly over-qualified relative to men on observed characteristics. Once we disaggregate the sample by education level, we show that the gender wage gap is 24% for less educated women and 9% for women with tertiary education in full-time formal employment. Observed characteristics only explain 1 % of this gap in absolute terms. We further disaggregate the data by public and private employment. The gender gap is higher in the private sector. However, women with tertiary education in the public sector are significantly better qualified compared to men, and consequently the adjusted gender wage gap is higher for women with tertiary education in the public sector. The Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, solid-liquid interfacial energy and grain boundary energy of solid Bi have been determined from the observed grain boundary groove shapes. The variation of thermal conductivity with temperature for eutectic solid phase (Bi-4.7 at.%Ag) has been measured. The ratio of thermal conductivity of equilibrated eutectic liquid phase to eutectic solid phase has also been measured with a Bridgman-type growth apparatus at the melting temperature. As theoretical models, band anticrossing and model solid theory are used. In order to obtain the electronic properties of the quantum well, the finite difference method is used. The laser beam affects the electronic properties of the quantum well by changing the shape of the confinement potential. This modification of the potential is determined by laser dressing parameter. By using dilute amount of nitrogen, conduction band and the depth of quantum well can be controlled. The strain which is introduced due to the presence of nitrogen can be compensated by using indium atoms. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to characterize the grafted membranes. Water uptake (WU), ion exchange capacity (IEC) and electrical resistance (ER) of the prepared membranes were measured in order to evaluate their physical properties The prepared membranes were applied to the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) process, in which their salt removal rates were evaluated and compared to those of CDI (capacitive deionization) process. The degree of grafting rose from 14.4% to 81.4% as the irradiation dose and the monomer concentration were increased. The water uptake ranged from 7.9% to 34.2%. The ionexchange capacity was observed between 0.43 meq/g and 1.1 meq/g, and the electrical resistance had values ranging from 12.2 Omega center dot cm(2) to 2.1 Omega center dot cm(2). The electrical resistance decreased as the ion-exchange capacity was extended. When the prepared cation exchange membrane was used in the MCDI process, the salt removal rate reached 87.6%, which was much higher than 28.8% of CDI process.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 21Synthesis of L-Cysteine Capped Silver Nanoparticles in Acidic Media at Room Temperature and Detailed Characterization(Springer, 2017-11-29) Panhwar, Sallahuddin; Hassan, Syeda Sara; Mahar, Rasool Bux; Canlier, Ali; Sirajuddin; Arain, MunazzaThis work reports a simple and one pot synthesis of water dispersible l-cysteine stabilized silver nanoparticles (l-CYS-AgNPs) in an acidic media. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized within few minutes of reaction time (< 5 min) at room temperature without needing to heat and use of any hazardous organic solvents. Prepared nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and zeta potential analysis, respectively. Surface plasmon resonance band of AgNPs which was observed at 392 nm by UV-Visible spectroscopy indicated successful formation of l-CYS-AgNPs in acidic media. Imaging techniques showed that AgNPs possess spherical morphology and average size of 25 nm. Nanoparticles were stable for more than 2 months when stored at ambient temperature. This approach is a facile and rapid one pot synthesis which can be stored as a homogenous aqueous dispersion for more than 2 months. Being stabilized by a sulfur-containing amino acid (l-cysteine) and the synthesis carried out in a moderately acidic media (pH 5.3) are distinctive aspect of this work. The immune cells are also residents of this stromal, cancerous, and inflammatory environment, and their types, densities, or functional differences are one of the key factors that mediate the fate of a tumor. T cells as a vital part of the immune system also are a component of tumor microenvironment, and their roles have been elucidated in many studies. The ratio of thermal conductivity of equilibrated liquid to thermal conductivity of solid SCN has also been determined to be 0.90. From the observed grain boundary groove shapes and measured thermal conductivity ratio, the Gibbs-Thomson coefficient (D") of solid SCN has been determined to be (5.46 +/- A 0.55) x 10(-8) K m. The solid-liquid interfacial energy (sigma (SL)) and the grain boundary energy of solid SCN have also been determined to be (8.25 +/- A 1.24) x 10(-3) J m(-2) and (15.84 +/- A 2.53) x 10(-3) J m(-2), respectively.Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 27Socio-Economic Determinants of Student Mobility and Inequality of Access to Higher Education in Italy(Springer, 2019-02-12) Turk, UmutThis paper introduces a modified version of the Hansen-gravity model as a framework to estimate the accessibility of higher education (HE) institutions in Italy from equal opportunities perspective. The fundamental assumption underlying gravity models is that accessibility decreases with spatial distance from opportunities. The paper extends the gravity equation to include socio-economic factors influencing the access to HE. The findings reveal differences in response to quality and other institutional characteristics by parental background and gender. Finally, decomposition of overall inequality into spatial and aspatial components reveals both the physical and social distance between groups of students seeking higher education opportunities in the country.
