    Deprem Anında ve Sonrasında Dönüşebilen Tasarım Önerileri: Günlük Kullanımdan Hayat Kurtaran Birimlere

    Depremler, yıkılan binalar ve devrilen eşyalar nedeniyle meydana gelen yaralanmalarla insan hayatını ciddi şekilde tehdit etmektedir. Bu çalışma, mobilyalara kendini kurtarma alanları entegre ederek ezilme yaralanmalarını önlemeyi ve deprem sonrası barınma ihtiyaçlarını karşılamayı amaçlayan tasarım önerileri sunmaktır. 2022 Güz döneminde Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi Deneysel Tasarım Stüdyosu kapsamında yürütülen çalışma, tanınmış bir mobilya tasarım firmasıyla iş birliği içinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Öğrenciler hem günlük yaşamda işlevsel hem de afet anlarında acil barınma alanı olarak kullanılabilecek çift amaçlı mobilya tasarımları geliştirmiştir. Projeler, deprem sırasında ve sonrasında kullanılmak üzere iki ana kategoriye ayrılmış; yaşam ve çalışma mekânlarında, dönüşebilir mobilya tasarımlarına odaklanmıştır. Bulgular, işlevsel ve uyarlanabilir tasarımlar yoluyla risk azaltma ve deprem sonrası uyum konularında yenilikçi yaklaşımları ortaya koymaktadır.

    University Librarians’ Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence, Its Application Areas İn Libraries, And The Future

    Today, libraries are among the institutions affected by changing technology and innovations. The popularization of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has also begun to transform library services. In this research, a survey was conducted to determine the adjustments that university libraries in Turkey have made and plan to make during the development process of AI technologies and applications, and to identify the services they have developed specific to the relevant period. The survey was carried out with the participation of 111 university library managers from 208 university libraries in Turkey. Through the analysis of the data, the status, knowledge, and awareness levels of university libraries regarding AI technologies and applications were determined, and measures and recommendations were presented to improve deficiencies and weaknesses. This research is the first and most comprehensive study conducted in Turkey by obtaining opinions and suggestions from university library managers on artificial intelligence. The research findings revealed that university libraries use AI applications such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grammarly to a certain extent; however, they have needs in developing institutional policies, enhancing personnel competencies, and planning related to AI. © 2024 University and Research Librarians Association (UNAK).     Clean Energy Production and Decarbonization of Energy Sector With Floating Photovoltaic Systems

    Floating photovoltaic systems (FPVS) offer several advantages over traditional land-based PV systems, which has contributed to a growing global interest in their deployment. Since the energy yields are strongly dependent on location and tilt angle of FPVS, this research focuses on the clean energy production and decarbonization potential of FPVS in Serbia and Türkiye for different water bodies, such are natural and artificial lakes and dams. The research is performed for the most appropriate lakes and dams, having in mind importance of the location, energy yields potential, distance from the electricity grid and main roads, environmental impact, water depth and land type quality. Tilt angles are analyzed in a range from 5 to 40°, and the optimal angle is depicted for selected locations. The highest energy yields for Türkiye were obtained for 30° tilt angle, while for Serbia it was 36°. The results showed that possible clean energy production in both countries reaches 15345 kWh of energy in total, while the yearly carbon emissions reduction for all selected locations goes up to 10.76 tCO<inf>2</inf>/year in total. Since the legal framework for the application of FPVS is not established yet in observed countries, these results contribute to the future development of legislation in the field of FPVS and encourage the stakeholders to invest in clean energy production. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Offshore Floating Modular Energy Islands: Technologies and Challenges

    Offshore floating modular energy islands (FMEIs) represent a promising solution to meet growing global energy demands, while addressing challenges associated with conventional energy infrastructure. This paper explores key technological components underpinning the design, construction, and energy generation of FMEIs, with a focus on three core areas: energy generation systems, floating structures and construction methods. The first technological component focuses on energy generation systems, examining the technologies of offshore wind power, solar and wave energy, to maximise overall energy production, while also highlighting the challenges involved in integrating these technologies. The second section examines the support structure of offshore floating platforms, as well as the key role of mooring systems in ensuring structural integrity under challenging marine conditions. The importance of advanced monitoring and maintenance strategies for long-term viability is also discussed. The third technological component discusses modular construction, highlighting the material choices and associated construction challenges in building FMEIs. This review also includes case studies and ongoing projects that demonstrate the real-world application of these technologies. Through the integration of advanced renewable energy generation technologies, floating and mooring systems and modular construction methods, FMEIs offer a sustainable and innovative approach to offshore energy production.     Modular Floating Energy Islands With Green Hydrogen Integration: Design of a Small-Scale P2x Scheme

    The climate crisis and rising carbon emissions make the integration of renewable energy systems into electricity grids worldwide inevitable. In this context, modular floating energy islands (MFEI) provide innovative solutions for hybrid systems with high renewable energy penetration. This study explores the simultaneous use of various renewable resources, such as solar, wind, tidal, and wave energy, through small-scale MFEI structures that can be situated in seas and lakes. Thanks to their modular design, these systems offer benefits like scalability, portability, and ease of maintenance, allowing for flexible and adaptive developments in the energy infrastructure. As highlighted in recent literature (e.g., the North Sea Wind Power Hub and EU H2Ocean projects), offshore structures for green hydrogen production support energy storage and carbon-free fuel conversion within the Power-to-X (P2X) framework. This study evaluates the potential of photovoltaic (PV)-supported hydrogen production in MFEI structures through numerical analyses. The results emphasize the strategic role of these structures in enhancing energy security, coastal protection, and reducing carbon emissions by producing significant amounts of hydrogen. This hydrogen can be used for various purposes, including re-electrification, industrial applications, heating, and agriculture. Future research should focus on real-time data optimization, AI-supported system management, and integrated hydrogen consumption scenarios. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Kayseri İlindeki Bazı Tarihi Eserlerde Bozunma Etkilerinin Tahribatsız Deney Yöntemleriyle Değerlendirilmesi

    İç Anadolu’da önemli bir yerleşim merkezi olan Kayseri, farklı dönemlerden günümüze kadar gelen birçok tarihi esere ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. İlin farklı bölgelerinde özellikle yoğun yerleşimin bulunduğu alanlarda, Selçuklu Dönemi’ne ait 12. ve 14. yüzyıllar arası yapılmış çok sayıda cami, kümbet ve medrese türü tarihi esere rastlamak mümkündür. Kültürel miras niteliğindeki bu eserler çoğunlukla yakın çevrede yoğun olarak bulunan farklı renk ve dokudaki ignimbirit türü kaya malzemesi kullanılarak inşa edilmişlerdir. Genel olarak düşük dayanıma sahip ve su etkilerine karşı hassas olan bu ignimbiritler zaman içerisinde atmosferik etkenler, hava kirliği, vandalizm vb. gibi olaylar sonucunda bozunmakta ve ilksel özelliklerini kaybetmektedirler. Bu çalışmada Kayseri il merkezindeki Roma ve Selçuklu dönemlerine ait tarihi eserler ile bu eserlerde zaman içinde meydana gelen bozunma etkileri incelenmiştir. Bozunma etkilerinin gözlemsel olarak incelenmesinin yanı sıra, eserlere herhangi bir zararı bulunmayan tahribatsız deney yöntemlerinden İğne Penetrometresi, Schmidt Çekici ve P-dalga hızı deneylerinden faydalanılmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra, bozunmuş ignimbirit bloklarına ait yerinde deneylerle belirlenen değerler, aynı malzemeye ait taze örneklerin fiziko-mekanik özellikleri ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucunda tarihi eserlerin taban bölümlerinde özellikle kılcallık sebebiyle pullanma ve kavlaklanma türü bozunmaların geliştiği ve ignimbiritlerin bu bölümlerde dayanımlarını önemli ölçüde kaybettiği tespit edilmiştir. İncelenen kümbetlerin bazılarına uygulanan iyileştirme çalışmalarında ise kümbetlerin çevresinde bulunan yüzey suyu drenajlarının yeterli ölçüde yapılamadığı ve yağmur ile biriken suların tarihi eserlerin daha fazla bozunmasına sebep olduğu saptanmıştır. Kültürel miras olarak değerlendirilen bu tarihi yapıların korunup gelecek nesillere aktarılması amacıyla, ignimbirit yapılarının yüzeysularına karşı duyarlılığı dikkate alınarak tarihi kümbetlerin çevresinde su drenajı iyileştirme çalışmaları yapılması önerilmektedir.

    Zeolite Synthesis by Alkali Fusion Method Using Two Different Fly Ashes Derived From Turkish Thermal Power Plants

    In this study, Faujasite (Na-LSX) (3.5(Ca0.3)3.5(Na0.6)3.5(Mg0.1)Al7Si17O48 32(H2O)) type zeolites and Ca-Filipsite (CaK0.6Na0.4Si5.2Al2.8O16 6(H2O)) type zeolites were produced from Sugözü Thermal Power Plant and Çatalaǧzi Thermal Power Plant fly ashes by alkali fusion method followed by water leaching, respectively. In these methods, fly ashes and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were mixed in certain proportions and sintered at 600°C in ash furnace. Then, zeolites were obtained from the ground materials after water leaching and solid/liquid separation, respectively. Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) analyses were used to characterize the synthesized zeolites. The zeolites synthesized with Sugözü fly ashes in a ratio of 1:2 had 136.93 meq/100 g CEC, whereas the CEC of synthesized zeolite from Çatalaǧzi fly ashes was found to be 247.88 meq/100 g. As a result, zeolites, which can be used as wastewater treatment agent, energy storage material, catalyst and separator, were synthesized by using 2 different Class F fly ash. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Wind Turbine Inspection With Drone: Advantages and Disadvantages

    The facilities on wind energy generation are increasingly finding usage areas in line with the ecologically friendly energy generation approach. One of the important activities of wind power generation facilities, which have high investment cost, low operating cost and low environmental impact is the maintenance and repair of wind turbines. A preventive maintenance approach is dominant to reduce maintenance times and eliminate lost time in wind turbines. Damage inspection of turbines has been evolved from tower crane access, rope access, camera viewing, and other applications to image with manual drones over the years. However, when these methods are evaluated within the framework of criteria such as cost, performance, occupational safety and data reliability, they are still insufficient and the need for inspection with autonomous drones arises. The advantages and disadvantages of autonomous drones used in the determination of damage in wind turbines are analyzed and the results are considered to contribute to the practitioners operating in the sector and academicians working in the field. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    What Are the Outcomes of Emerging Markets Mergers and Acquisitions? Evidence From Turkey

    Emerging markets have become home to an increasing amount of acquisition activity. However, we do not know much about how domestic and international acquisitions differ in terms of their outcomes. The objective of this study is to compare these acquisitions in the context of an emerging country. To do so, we analysed all acquisitions that occurred in Turkey between 1989 and 2017. We found that domestic acquirers significantly outperformed foreign acquirers of Turkish companies. Our analysis of financial indicators suggests that foreign acquirers are larger in size, have greater leverage and intangibles, and engage in bigger deals. However, growth in leverage, capital expenditures, and administrative and staff expenses are greater in domestic acquirers. Overall, our findings suggest that domestic acquirers are affected more significantly by acquisitions compared to foreign acquirers and based on the financial outcomes of acquisitions there are several differences between these two groups of acquirers. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Using Students' Performance to Improve Ontologies for Intelligent E-Learning System

    Ontologies have often been recommended for E-learning systems, but few efforts have successfully incorporated student data to represent knowledge conceptualizations. Defining key concepts and their relations between each other establishes the backbone of our E-learning system. The system guides an individual student through his/her course by evaluating their progress and suggesting instructional material to review based upon their answers. Three main tasks are performed within this framework: building ontologies for the course, measuring a student's understanding level for the concepts, and making personal suggestions to create an individualized learning environment. This paper presents: the integration of ontologies, assisted with student data, together with an intelligent Recommendation Module for the development of an E-learning system; the comparison and correction adaption of ontology from students' mind maps; and the assessment of students' actual weaknesses in comparison to what Recommendation Module suggests. The sample of 127 students, five classrooms, was conveniently selected among seventh grade students of a demographically average school in a major city in Turkey. The students' achievement was assessed and the scores for different questions were investigated for associations with concepts made in the students' minds. The results provided significant correlations among scores, and a fit model for the concepts represented by questions. The student suggested model slightly differed from the ontology map from the experts. Based on the data-supported model, the Recommendation Module more accurately determined the students' learning deficiencies and suggested concepts to be reviewed.
