Machine Learning for V2X-Enabled Microgrids: A Bibliometric and Thematic Review of Intelligent Energy Management Applications
(Springer Heidelberg, 2026-03-09) Dogan, Yasemin; Unlu, Ramazan
Modern power systems are evolving due to convergence of electric mobility, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy integration. Electric vehicles serve as dynamic, mobile energy storage units playing a vital role in ensuring resilient microgrid operations, via vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. However, despite the rise of machine learning (ML) in energy management, much of the existing literature remains fragmented lacking a holistic perspective across all facets of V2X-enabled microgrids. This study fills this gap by conducting a systematic bibliometric and thematic analysis of 310 articles obtained from Web of Science (2013-2024). By combining bibliometric mapping with thematic synthesis, the research identifies dominant and emerging ML techniques-ranging from reinforcement learning to federated learning-and evaluates their roles in microgrid management. The study highlights underexplored areas, including decentralized coordination, encouraging prosumer participation, understanding user behavior, safeguarding cybersecurity, improving real-time optimization, and the effective integration and adaptation of V2X technology within microgrid ecosystems. These gaps emphasize the need for interdisciplinary research and policy frameworks to address the social dimensions of future energy systems. Beyond a comprehensive overview, this paper proposes a research roadmap integrating technical, social, and policy dimensions. It offers actionable guidance for researchers, stakeholders aiming to unlock the potential of intelligent, human-centered, and socially inclusive energy ecosystems. Furthermore, the findings align with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7, 11, and 13), while also creating a positive impact on humanity by supporting the well-being of both society and the planet. Ultimately, this reinforces the indispensable role of ML in advancing the zero-carbon transition.

Blockchain-Based Energy Applications: The DSO Perspective
(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2021) Yagmur, Ahmet; Dedeturk, Beyhan Adanur; Soran, Ahmet; Jung, Jaesung; Onen, Ahmet
This paper discusses blockchain-based energy applications from the distribution system operator (DSO) perspective. Blockchain has a potential impact on newly emergent actors, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and the charging facility units (CFUs) of the electricity grid. Although Blockchain offers magnificent decentralized solutions, the central management of DSOs still plays a significant, non-negligible role, owing to the reality of the existing grid structure. Numerous related studies of proposed blockchain-based EV systems have investigated the energy costs of EVs, fast and efficient charging, privacy and security, P2P energy trading, sharing economy, the selection of appropriate CFUs location, and scheduling. However, cooperation with DSO organizations has not been adequately addressed. Blockchain-based solutions mainly suggest an entirely distributed and decentralized approach for energy trading; however, converting the entire power system infrastructure is considerably expensive. Building a thoroughly decentralized electricity network in a short time is nearly impossible, particularly at the national grid level. In this regard, the applicability of the solutions is as significant as their appropriateness, especially from the DSO perspective, and must be examined closely. We searched and analyzed the blockchain literature related to EVs, CFUs, DERs, microgrids, marketing, and DSOs to define the DSO-based requirements for potential blockchain applications in the energy sector, specifically EV evolution.

A Hybrid Energy Harvesting Framework for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks Based Smart Grid Applications
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-06) Yildiz, Huseyin Ugur; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Tavli, Bülent
In smart grid applications, Wireless Sensor Net-works (WSNs) which consist of battery limited sensor nodes are used on critical equipments of power distribution grids for monitoring purposes. WSN nodes have tight energy constraints hence it is important to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes due to harsh propagation characteristics of smart grid environment. One possible way to reduce the energy consumption is to utilize transmission power control where transmission powers are adjusted according to channel conditions. Another technique is to employ energy harvesting schemes to provide additional power for nodes by using environmental energy sources. Solar and electromagnetic energies are two possible environmental energy sources in outdoor substation environments. Solar energy can be efficiently exploited in a sunny day. On the other hand, electromagnetic energy can be used at any time. In this work, we propose a hybrid energy harvesting model that exploits both solar and electromagnetic energies and develop a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) method to minimize the energy dissipation of sensor nodes. By using the MIP framework, we quantify the impact of the proposed hybrid energy harvesting model as well as transmission power control on the energy saving of nodes. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
