Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 8Parenting and Education: Navigating Class, Religiosity and Secularity in Istanbul(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Kolluoglu, Biray; Dincer, Evren M.This article studies the educational choices that secular and religious professional and managerial middle-class parents in Istanbul make for their children. It explores the ways in which class intersects with religion in Turkey where, politics, culture, social, and even economic life are marked by a deep divide among the religious and the secular. Focusing on a particular segment of the middle classes, that with higher economic and social capital, the article brings to fore the ways in which religiosity and secularity structure the processes of transforming privileges into acquired rights in the form of educational qualifications and extracurricular skills. It explores the current sociological conjuncture that bereaves both groups, albeit in different ways, of their ability to fully mobilize their accumulated economic, social, and cultural capitals in reproducing their class position in their children. The article argues that exploring the parenting of education along the secular and the religious divide can unravel the foundational elements of the ongoing competition and conflict in Turkey and enables a deeper understanding of the current divide and the potential for a future reconciliation. The study relies on a qualitative study that entails interviews with thirty families and two focus groups.Article Citation - Scopus: 1A Gendered Analysis of Palestinian Refugee Women's Experiences of Migration From Syria to Türkiye(Sage Publications Ltd, 2024) Kurtoglu, Ayca; Llyod, Armagan Teke; Salimoglu, ZaferAfter the outbreak of the conflict in 2011, millions of people fled Syria across its borders. This gave way to a new category of people, "Syrian refugees." While this categorical understanding constitutes the basis for legal entitlements, it homogenizes all fleeing Syria and results in concealing the differential experiences and vulnerabilities of particular groups. The paper challenges this blanket categorization by focusing on the migration experiences of Palestinian women from Syria to Turkiye around the concepts of biological and social reproduction which represent the largely neglected aspects concerning the process of forced migration. By drawing on six women's experiences, the paper concludes that the homogeneity of the Syrian migrants is an illusion; women's migrations are shaped through their gendered and ethnic history; and women face gender-specific challenges and opportunities in both home and host countries. We particularly argue that policies on border control and migrant's integration fail to consider the subjective conditions and needs of particular groups within the Syrian migrants.Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 23Pressure-Induced Amorphization of MOF-5: A First Principles Study(Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, 2018) Erkartal, Mustafa; Durandurdu, Murat; Erkartal, Mustafa; Durandurdu, MuratAmorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the amorphization of crystalline MOFs under mechanical stimuli are attracting considerable interest in last few years. However, we still have limited knowledge on their atomic arrangement and the physical origin of crystalline-to-amorphous phase transitions under mechanical stimuli. In this study, ab initio simulations within a generalized gradient approximation are carried out to investigate the high-pressure behavior of MOF-5. Similar to the previous experimental findings, a pressure-induced amorphization is observed at 2 GPa through the simulations. The phase transformation is an irreversible first order transition and accompanied by around 68% volume collapse. Remarkably, the transition arises from local distortions and, contrary to previous suggestions, does not involve any bond breaking and formation. Additionally, a drastic band gap closure is perceived for the amorphous state. This study has gone some way towards enhancing our understanding of pressure-induced amorphization in MOFs.Article Citation - Scopus: 12Kinetic Rosette Patterns and Tessellations(Wit Press, 2017) Beatini, ValentinaThe paper investigates the possibility to create kinetic rosette patterns and their tessellations by means of modular linkages which rely on the same type and number of symmetry operations as the reference models. The mechanisms show a hierarchy of movements. It is found that symmetry is an effective unifying concept in the design of both the fixed models and the mechanisms. Furthermore, the resulting rosette linkages and their tessellations have peculiar kinematic characteristics if compared to other modular mechanisms which may be alternatively used to reproduce the same kind of models. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Evaluation of Hybrid Classification Approaches: Case Studies on Credit Datasets(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2018) Cetiner, Erkan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Kocak, TaskinHybrid classification approaches on credit domain are widely used to obtain valuable information about customer behaviours. Single classification algorithms such as neural networks, support vector machines and regression analysis have been used since years on related area. In this paper, we propose hybrid classification approaches, which try to combine several classifiers and ensemble learners to boost accuracy on classification results. We worked with two credit datasets, German dataset which is a public dataset and a Turkish Corporate Bank dataset. The goal of using such diverse datasets is to search for generalization ability of proposed model. Results show that feature selection plays a vital role on classification accuracy, hybrid approaches which shaped with ensemble learners outperform single classification techniques and hybrid approaches which consists SVM has better accuracy performance than other hybrid approaches. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Synergistic Effect of Organic Acid on the Dissolution of Mixed Nickel-Cobalt Hydroxide Precipitate in Sulphuric Acid Solution(Edp Sciences S A, 2019) Kursunoglu, Sait; Kursunoglu, SaitThe synergistic effect of an organic acid on the dissolution of nickel and cobalt from a mixed nickel-cobalt hydroxide precipitate (MHP) in sulphuric acid solution was studied. The effects of sulphuric acid concentration, the type of organic acid, leaching time, leaching temperature and stirring speed on the dissolution of the metals were experimentally investigated. It was observed that there is no beneficial effect of leaching temperature and stirring speed on the dissolution of the metals from the used MHP product which contains 37.7% Ni, 2.1% Co and 5.6% Mn. It was found that citric acid was more effective than oxalic acid for the dissolution of nickel and manganese, whereas oxalic acid was more effective than citric acid for the dissolution of cobalt. The addition of oxalic acid into the leaching system, however, affected the dissolution of nickel negatively because nickel precipitate as nickel oxalate. Therefore, the use of citric acid as synergist for sulphuric acid leaching of MHP product is more promising. After 60 min of leaching, 90.9% Ni, 84.2% Co and 98.1% Mn were dissolved under the following conditions: 0.75 M sulphuric acid, 2 g citric acid, 1/10 solid-to-liquid ratio, 400 rpm stirring speed and 30 degrees C temperature. The experimental results demonstrate that the addition of citric acid as a synergist for sulphuric acid leaching of a MHP product provides beneficial effect for the dissolution of nickel, cobalt and manganese.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Application of Team-Based Learning at a Health Science Course: A Case Study(Athens Institute for Education and Research, 2019) Bengu, ElifThe purpose of this study is to identify students’ reactions to the implementation of team-based learning as an instructional strategy in a pharmacology course in the context of a Turkish university. Team-based learning is defined as an active form of learning that not only encourages individual effort but also team involvement to learn in an academic setting. Team-based learning is one of the learning techniques/methods that is increasingly being used in medical education. Literature shows that in teambased learning students apply the concepts at the time they are learned in the classroom, before the exams, as opposed to traditional lecturing, in which the concepts that are learned are later tested in the exams. Furthermore, research supports that faculty are more engaged with their students in team-based learning, since it affords instructors the ability to readily identify what their students are achieving, as opposed to traditional lecturing or other group approaches. There are limited studies in Turkey that examine the applications of team-based learning in a higher education setting. Therefore, this study describes the use of the team-based learning technique in an undergraduate health science course in Turkey. The initial results indicate that this instructional strategy was beneficial for students’ learning. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - Scopus: 31Numerical Solutions of the Kawahara Equation by the Septic B-Spline Collocation Method(International Academic Press, 2014) Karakoç, Seydi Battal Gazi; Zeybek, Halil; Ak, TurgutIn this article, a numerical solution of the Kawahara equation is presented by septic B-spline collocation method. Applying the Von-Neumann stability analysis, the present method is shown to be unconditionally stable. The accuracy of the proposed method is checked by two test problems. L2 and L∞ error norms and conserved quantities are given at selected times. The obtained results are found in good agreement with the some recent results. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Editorial Editors' Introduction(Cambridge University Press) Yükseker, Deniz; Kolluoǧlu, Biray; Dinçer, Evren MehmetSince before the publication of New Perspectives on Turkey’s spring 2023 issue, politics has been at the top of the agenda of public discussions in Turkey. The reason was the general elections for the presidency and the parliament on May 14; in the run-off on May 28, Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected for a third, five-year term and the party ˘ he leads, the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi; AKP), maintained its majority in the parliament in an alliance with the Nationalist Action Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi; MHP) and smaller extremist parties. To what extent and how quickly the election results will lead to a further descent into full authoritarianism – already well documented in the pages of previous NPT issues – is something that social scientists are likely to continue to observe. Domestic politics therefore will continue to be an important theme for social science research on Turkey from diverse disciplines and methodologiesArticle Citation - Scopus: 25A Cubic B-Spline Galerkin Approach for the Numerical Simulation of the GEW Equation(International Academic Press, 2016) Karakoç, Seydi Battal Gazi; Zeybek, HalilThe generalized equal width (GEW) wave equation is solved numerically by using lumped Galerkin approach with cubic B-spline functions. The proposed numerical scheme is tested by applying two test problems including single solitary wave and interaction of two solitary waves. In order to determine the performance of the algorithm, the error norms L2 and L∞ and the invariants I1, I2 and I3 are calculated. For the linear stability analysis of the numerical algorithm, von Neumann approach is used. As a result, the obtained findings show that the presented numerical scheme is preferable to some recent numerical methods. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - Scopus: 2A Comparative Analysis of International and Domestic Acquisitions: What Drives Acquirer Competitiveness(Inderscience Publishers, 2018) Genç, Omer Faruk; Zakaria, RimiDespite several decades of research in the context of mergers and acquisitions (M&As), an understanding of acquirer competitiveness in international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions remains inconclusive. This empirical study presents a comparative framework to identify a set of intangible factors that differentiate the long-term competitiveness of acquirers engaging in both of these types of acquisitions. Building on the information asymmetry logic, we find that access to accurate information, acquirers’ research and development (R&D) intensity, and similarity between the acquirer and the target play a vital role in determining the overall competitiveness of acquirers. Using a sample of all the M&As that occurred between 1985 and 2007 and applying a matching control methodology, sound comparisons are made to draw conclusions. From a theoretical standpoint, the findings help generalise the importance of intangible factors from the contextual, acquirer-centric, and dyadic angles. From a practical viewpoint, the conclusions enable managers to evaluate their firms’ preparedness for international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Differences in the Self: Clinical Individuals Have Less Individuation and Promotion, but More Prevention(HOGREFE AG-HOGREFE AG SUISSE, 2023) Yalcindag, BilgeThis research aimed to compare two samples (clinical and university) in terms of basic self-orientations and self-regulation strategies. We expected lower scores on basic self-orientations and promotion, and higher scores on prevention in the clinical sample. The balanced model of self claims that the flourishing of basic self-orientations (individuation and relatedness) is related to better psychological functioning. However, this claim was never tested in a clinical sample. Additionally, the regulatory focus theory, a theory of self-regulation, claims that to reach desired end states, individuals use two systems: promotion (advancement, accomplishment) and prevention (conservation, security). Individuals with psychopathology symptoms may use promotion less and prevention more. The clinical sample consisted of 91 people (55 females, 36 males) who were under a psychological/psychiatric treatment due to various mental health complaints (Mage=29.3, SD=5.95, Range=18-42). Most of them had at least university degrees (69%). The second sample consisted of 94 university students (63 females, 30 males; Mage=23.9, SD=2.22, Range=22-34). The first MANCOVA, comparing clinical vs. university samples on individuation and relatedness controlling for age and gender, revealed a group effect (F(2,171)=4.751, p=.01, Wilks’ Lambda=0.95, partial η2=.53). Individuation was lower in clinical sample (M=4.90) than university sample (M=5.29). The second MANCOVA showed a group effect on the promotion and prevention (F(2,171)=13.574, p=.000, Wilks’ Lambda=0.86, partial η2=0.14). Promotion was lower in clinical sample (M=19.74) than in university sample (M=22.37), however prevention was higher (M=17.52) than university sample (M=15.56). The psychological symptoms varied in clinical sample, and were not assessed in university sample. Individuals in clinical sample were less likely to have an individuated self, to regulate themselves with promotion, but more likely to regulate themselves with prevention. Researchers and clinicians should work on thwarted self-orientations and dysfunctional self-regulation strategies.
