Article AlN Piezoelectric Quad-Actuators for 2D Optical Micro Scanning(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Hah, Dooyoung; 0000-0002-1290-0597; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Elektrik - Elektronik Mühendisliği Bölümü; Hah, Dooyoung; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 02. Mühendislik Fakültesi; 02.05. Elektrik & Elektronik MühendisliğiPiezoelectric actuation has been one of the frequent choices for optical micro scanning. In most of the cases, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) has been used as the piezoelectric material. However, PZT has a potential issue in biomedical applications due to the content of lead. For this, AlN can be used as an alternative. The main drawback of AlN is its low piezoelectric coefficients. In order to overcome such a drawback, this paper presents a novel actuator configuration, designed for a quasi-static operation mode. Quad-actuators and meander-shaped hinges are the essence of the proposed actuator configuration. Numerical simulation study is carried out to prove the concept of the device. The study also shows that the proposed scanner can have the optical scan angle of 9 degree at a quasi-static mode. Two different scan modes, a raster-like mode and a Lissajous mode are tested, demonstrating the two-dimensional scanning capability of the device.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Application of Team-Based Learning at a Health Science Course: A Case Study(Athens Institute for Education and Research, 2019) Bengu, Elif; 0000-0001-9817-7207; AGÜ, Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Temel Eğitim Bölümü; Bengü, Elif; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 10. RektörlükThe purpose of this study is to identify students’ reactions to the implementation of team-based learning as an instructional strategy in a pharmacology course in the context of a Turkish university. Team-based learning is defined as an active form of learning that not only encourages individual effort but also team involvement to learn in an academic setting. Team-based learning is one of the learning techniques/methods that is increasingly being used in medical education. Literature shows that in teambased learning students apply the concepts at the time they are learned in the classroom, before the exams, as opposed to traditional lecturing, in which the concepts that are learned are later tested in the exams. Furthermore, research supports that faculty are more engaged with their students in team-based learning, since it affords instructors the ability to readily identify what their students are achieving, as opposed to traditional lecturing or other group approaches. There are limited studies in Turkey that examine the applications of team-based learning in a higher education setting. Therefore, this study describes the use of the team-based learning technique in an undergraduate health science course in Turkey. The initial results indicate that this instructional strategy was beneficial for students’ learning. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 48Citation - Scopus: 59Are Clean Energy and Carbon Emission Allowances Caused by Bitcoin? A Novel Time-Varying Method(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Dogan, Eyup; Majeed, Muhammad Tariq; Luni, Tania; 0000-0003-0476-5177; AGÜ, Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Ekonomi Bölümü; Dogan, Eyup; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 03.02. Ekonomi; 03. Yönetim Bilimleri FakültesiThe bitcoin market has substantially grown in recent years. The researchers are exploring its various repercussions for socioeconomic and political matters; however, the literature still lacks clear evidence on how bitcoin interacts with energy and the environment. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between bitcoin, clean energy, and carbon emissions allowances by applying the novel time-varying Granger causality test on the daily data spanning from Sept 17, 2014, to October 12, 2021. The empirical findings confirm that both clean energy and emission allowances are causally associated with bitcoin. However, this causal relationship varies over time and the duration of causality is longer as suggested by the recursive evolving procedure. The outcome is robust when bitcoin is measured by the volume and the price. Furthermore, the results obtained from robustness analysis conducted through heteroskedastic consistent test also validate the findings that bitcoin causes clean energy and carbon allowance. The findings offer a platform for government officials and policy managers to improve clean energy and carbon allowance markets for sustainable development by managing and using the tools to control and regulate cryptocurrency markets.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 18Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Turkey With a Novel Economic Uncertainty Index(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2021) Mugaloglu, Erhan; Polat, Ali Yavuz; Tekin, Hasan; Kilic, Edanur; 0000-0001-5362-6259; AGÜ, Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Ekonomi Bölümü; Mugaloglu, Erhan; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityPurpose This study aims to measure economic uncertainty in Turkey by a novel economic uncertainty index (EUI) employing principal component analysis (PCA). We assess the impact of Covid-19 pandemic in Turkey with our constructed uncertainty index. Design/methodology/approach In order to obtain the EUI, this study employs a dimension reduction method of PCA using 14 macroeconomic indicators that spans from January 2011 to July 2020. The first principal component is picked as a proxy for the economic uncertainty in Turkey which explains 52% of total variation in entire sample. In the second part of our analysis, with our constructed EUI we conduct a structural vector autoregressions (SVAR) analysis simulating the Covid-19-induced uncertainty shock to the real economy. Findings Our EUI sensitively detects important economic/political events in Turkey as well as Covid-19-induced uncertainty rising to extremely high levels during the outbreak. Our SVAR results imply a significant decline in economic activity and in the sub-indices as well. Namely, industrial production drops immediately by 8.2% and cumulative loss over 8 months will be 15% on average. The losses in the capital and intermediate goods are estimated to be 18 and 25% respectively. Forecast error variance decomposition results imply that uncertainty shocks preserve its explanatory power in the long run, and intermediate goods production is more vulnerable to uncertainty shocks than overall industrial production and capital goods production. Practical implications The results indicate that monetary and fiscal policy should aim to decrease uncertainty during Covid-19. Moreover, since investment expenditures are affected severely during the outbreak, policymakers should impose investment subsidies. Originality/value This is the first study constructing a novel EUI which sensitively captures the critical economic/political events in Turkey. Moreover, we assess the impact of Covid-19-driven uncertainty on Turkish Economy with a SVAR model.Article Beyond Moral Foundations: In it What is in it(2023) Özkan, Türker; Yalçındağ, Bilge; 0000-0001-7867-7845; AGÜ, İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Psikoloji Bölümü; Yalçındağ, Bilge; 01. Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Biogas Intake Pressure and Port Air Swirl Optimization to Enhance the Diesel RCCI Engine Characteristics for Low Environmental Emissions(Elsevier, 2024) Dalha, Ibrahim B.; Koca, Kemal; Said, Mior A.; Rafindadi, Aminu D.; 0000-0003-2464-6466; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü; Koca, Kemal; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 02.06. Makine Mühendisliği; 02. Mühendislik FakültesiExhaust emission and combustion control in RCCI (reactivity-controlled compression ignition) focused mainly on the direct-injected fuel parameters, urging to investigate the advantages of port-fuel intake parameters. The engine was modified for port injection of Biogas at the valve and RCCI mode. The influence of port swirl ratio (PSR, 0 - 80%) and biogas injection pressure (BIP, 1 - 4 bar) on the diesel RCCI combustion and emissions was tested and optimized at varied loads and 1600 rpm in a port injection at the valve (PIVE) approach. Established kinetic mechanisms were combined with multi-objective optimization to further investigate, predict, and analyze emissions occurrence and trade-offs for reduced environmental impacts. The results show that the radiation absorption triggered by increased CO2 lowers combustion temperature, resulting in prolonged ignition. Setting the airflow to swirl lowers the in-cylinder pressure at elevated BIP while raising the heat generated across the BIPs. Increasing the PSR slows the combustion while BIP speeds up the process. BIP and PSR show great trade-off reduction ability among all emission parameters. The optimum unburned hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide, particulate, and carbon monoxide emissions for the injection at the valve were found to be 109.58, 0.577, and 2.336 ppm, and 0.103%, respectively, at low-load, low-BIP, and high-PSR. The emissions were lowered by 6.58, 91.26, 80.65, and 13.45% compared to the premixed RCCI mode, respectively. Therefore, introducing lowpressure biogas amid high swirling air at the valve elevates the in-cylinder condition while lowering the emissions, mitigating their environmental implications.Article Citation - WoS: 42Citation - Scopus: 51CBI4.0: A Cross-Layer Approach for Big Data Gathering for Active Monitoring and Maintenance in the Manufacturing Industry 4.0(Elsevier, 2021) Faheem, Muhammad; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Ali, Rashid; Raza, Basit; Ngadi, Md Asri; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü; Faheem, Muhammad; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityIndustry 4.0 (I4.0) defines a new paradigm to produce high-quality products at the low cost by reacting quickly and effectively to changing demands in the highly volatile global markets. In Industry 4.0, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled Wireless Sensors (WSs) in the manufacturing processes, such as equipment, machining, assembly, material handling, inspection, etc., generates a huge volume of data known as Industrial Big Data (IBD). However, the reliable and efficient gathering and transmission of this big data from the source sensors to the floor inspection system for the real-time monitoring of unexpected changes in the production and quality control processes is the biggest challenge for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs). This is because of the harsh nature of the indoor industrial environment that causes high noise, signal fading, multipath effects, heat and electromagnetic interference, which reduces the transmission quality and trigger errors in the IWSNs. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel cross-layer data gathering approach called CBI4.0 for active monitoring and control of manufacturing processes in the Industry 4.0. The key aim of the proposed CBI4.0 scheme is to exploit the multi-channel and multi-radio architecture of the sensor network to guarantee quality of service (QoS) requirements, such as higher data rates, throughput, and low packet loss, corrupted packets, and latency by dynamically switching between different frequency bands in the Multichannel Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSNs). By performing several simulation experiments through EstiNet 9.0 simulator, the performance of the proposed CBI4.0 scheme is compared against existing studies in the automobile Industry 4.0. The experimental outcomes show that the proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes and is suitable for effective control and monitoring of various events in the automobile Industry 4.0.Conference Object Ceramide Is a Key Factor That Regulates the Crosstalk Between TGF-Β and Sonic Hedgehog Signaling at the Basal Cilia to Control Cell Migration and Tumor Metastasis(Federation Amer Soc Exp Biol, 2016) Gencer, Salih; Oleinik, Natalia; Dany, Mohammed; Ogretmen, Besim; 01. We analyzed tweets from 20 CSOs in Turkey for a period of 7 months by using the Information-Community-Action framework. For all types of CSOs, the number of information tweets was higher than the number of action tweets, which, in turn, was higher in number than the community tweets. Religious/conservative and anti-government CSOs posted significantly more tweets than secular and pro-government CSOs, respectively. Religious/conservative and pro-government CSOs posted more information and community tweets than secular and anti-government CSOs, respectively. The number of anti-government CSOs’ action tweets was higher than that of pro-government CSOs. We, therefore, propose that the ideological stance of a CSO is a factor affecting the content of its tweets in societies where CSOs are politically polarized. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - Scopus: 2A Comparative Analysis of International and Domestic Acquisitions: What Drives Acquirer Competitiveness(Inderscience Publishers, 2018) Genç, Omer Faruk; Zakaria, Rimi; AGÜ, Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Genc, Omer Faruk; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityDespite several decades of research in the context of mergers and acquisitions (M&As), an understanding of acquirer competitiveness in international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions remains inconclusive. This empirical study presents a comparative framework to identify a set of intangible factors that differentiate the long-term competitiveness of acquirers engaging in both of these types of acquisitions. Building on the information asymmetry logic, we find that access to accurate information, acquirers’ research and development (R&D) intensity, and similarity between the acquirer and the target play a vital role in determining the overall competitiveness of acquirers. Using a sample of all the M&As that occurred between 1985 and 2007 and applying a matching control methodology, sound comparisons are made to draw conclusions. From a theoretical standpoint, the findings help generalise the importance of intangible factors from the contextual, acquirer-centric, and dyadic angles. From a practical viewpoint, the conclusions enable managers to evaluate their firms’ preparedness for international vis-à-vis domestic acquisitions. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 47Citation - Scopus: 51Comprehensive Experimental Analysis of the Effects of Elevated Temperatures in Geopolymer Concretes With Variable Alkali Activator Ratios(Elsevier, 2023) Ozbayrak, Ahmet; Kucukgoncu, Hurmet; Aslanbay, Huseyin Hilmi; Aslanbay, Yuksel Gul; Atas, Oguzhan; 0000-0001-5148-8753; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, İnşaat Mühendisliği Bölümü; Kucukgoncu, Hurmet; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 02.03. İnşaat Mühendisliği; 02. Mühendislik FakültesiBy growing population and rapid urbanization, demand for concrete increases exponentially. Researches on use of fly ash material in waste product class for concrete production are important to produce concrete more environmentally friendly. However, there is a need for more research to use geopolymer concrete (GPC) in every field where ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPC) is used. Therefore, it is crucial to experimentally investigate thermal properties as well as me-chanical properties of geopolymer concrete. As investigated thermal properties, the main factor affecting strength development of GPC is alkali activator ratios. In this study, GPC prism samples with nine different compositions, produced by various alkali ratios. After flexural strength tests, they were cut into cubes and exposed to 400 degrees C, 600 degrees C and 800 degrees C, then they were subjected to compressive strength tests. Results obtained from different AA/FA and SS/SH ratios were eval-uated as mechanical properties at ambient temperature and physical, mechanical and micro-structural properties at elevated temperature. An empirical formula, which considers the effect of activator ratios, was proposed to calculate flexural strength depending on compressive strength of samples at ambient temperature. As an increase of SS/SH and AA/FA ratios, compressive strength increased, while flexural strength decreased. The increase in AA/FA ratio decreased compressive strength of samples exposed to high temperatures, while increase in SS/SH ratio did not deter-mine at elevated temperatures. There is an inverse change with AA/FA ratio and parallel change with SS/SH ratio between compressive strengths of samples at ambient temperature and exposed to high temperature.Article Citation - Scopus: 25A Cubic B-Spline Galerkin Approach for the Numerical Simulation of the GEW Equation(International Academic Press, 2016) Karakoç, Seydi Battal Gazi; Zeybek, Halil; AGÜ; Zeybek, Halil; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityThe generalized equal width (GEW) wave equation is solved numerically by using lumped Galerkin approach with cubic B-spline functions. The proposed numerical scheme is tested by applying two test problems including single solitary wave and interaction of two solitary waves. In order to determine the performance of the algorithm, the error norms L2 and L∞ and the invariants I1, I2 and I3 are calculated. For the linear stability analysis of the numerical algorithm, von Neumann approach is used. As a result, the obtained findings show that the presented numerical scheme is preferable to some recent numerical methods. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Data-Driven Discovery and DFT Modeling of Fe4H on the Atomistic Level(Elsevier B.V., 2024) Zagorac, Dejan; Zagorac, Jelena; Djukic, Milos B.; Bal, Burak; Schön, Johann Christian; 0000-0002-7389-9155; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü; Bal, Burak; 01. Of special interest in materials engineering is the stability of such materials, where hydrogen embrittlement has gained particular importance in recent years. Here, we present the results for the Fe-H system. In the past, most of the work on iron hydrides has been focused on hydrogen-rich compounds since they have a variety of interesting properties at extreme conditions (e.g. superconductivity). However, we present the first atomistic study of an iron-rich Fe4H compound which has been predicted using a combination of data mining and quantum mechanical calculations. Novel structures have been discovered in the Fe4H chemical system for possible experimental synthesis at the atomistic level. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Design and Development of Functional Organic Small Molecules and Polymers for Optoelectronics(Amer Chemical Soc, 2016) Usta, Hakan; Demirel, Gokhan; Facchetti, Antonio; Muccini, Michele; 0000-0002-0618-1979; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Malzeme Bilimi ve Nanoteknoloji Mühendisliği Bölümü; Usta, Hakan; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityPatients with motor impairments need caregivers' help to initiate the operation of brain-computer interfaces (BCI). This study aims to identify and characterize movement intention using multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) signals as a means to initiate BCI systems without extra accessories/methodologies. We propose to discriminate the resting and motor imagery (MI) states with high accuracy using Fourier-based synchrosqueezing transform (FSST) as a feature extractor. FSST has been investigated and compared with other popular approaches in 28 healthy subjects for a total of 6657 trials. The accuracy and f-measure values were obtained as 99.8% and 0.99, respectively, when FSST was used as the feature extractor and singular value decomposition (SVD) as the feature selection method and support vector machines as the classifier. Moreover, this study investigated the use of data that contain certain amount of noise without any preprocessing in addition to the clean counterparts. Furthermore, the statistical analysis of EEG channels with the best discrimination (of resting and MI states) characteristics demonstrated that F4-Fz-C3-Cz-C4-Pz channels and several statistical features had statistical significance levels, p, less than 0.05. This study showed that the preparation of the movement can be detected in real-time employing FSST-SVD combination and several channels with minimal pre-processing effort.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 15Does Islamic Inclusion of Syrians Represent a Real Challenge to Europe's Security Approach?: Dilemmas of the AKP's Syrian Refugee Discourse(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Balkilic, Ozgur; Teke Lloyd, Fatma Armagan; Balkilic, Ozgur; Teke Lloyd, Fatma Armagan; AGÜ, İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 06. İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi; 06.01. Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerDrawing upon the critical geopolitics literature and discourse analysis, this article will explain how the ruling AKP in Turkey fashioned an alternative, Islamically infused migration discourse in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and how it depicted this as counter-hegemonic to the dominant depictions of East and West embedded within Europe's existing securitization discourse. According to the AKP's geopolitical discourse, the differing attitudes evinced in Europe and Turkey toward the Syrian migrants can be explained by civilizational values deriving from the history and religious composition of the respective regions, as between the Orient and the Occident. However, this article examines to what extent this self-promoted discourse of Islamic inclusion has succeeded in engendering a more progressive settlement and integration regime. It argues that it has actually fostered its own system of 'Othering' and has led to the development of selective admission and exclusionary practices similar to those in Europe.Article Citation - WoS: 1Educating Masses: The Committee of Union and Progress Clubs and Schools in the Late Ottoman Empire(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Tozoglu, Ahmet Erdem; 0000-0002-8434-7882; AGÜ, Mimarlık Fakültesi, Mimarlık Bölümü; Tozoglu, Ahmet Erdem; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityThis article examines the social and architectural context of an extensive building campaign in Turkey in the early twentieth century. The Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), one of the Second Constitutional Period's prominent political and cultural actors (1908-18), commissioned club and school buildings for social outreach operations. Influenced by their European counterparts, the Committee's protagonists believed that a social revolution could be accomplished by employing the education of the masses. Moreover, education was also essential to create a national identity for an Empire in a struggle. In this context, many clubs (for adults) and schools (for the youngsters) mushroomed in many cities simultaneously. Accordingly, the architecture of new club and school buildings reflected societal concerns and provided remarkable examples of their kinds. The education of the masses and the use of social propaganda by state agents in Republican Turkey have been scrutinized so far. Still the origins of the social engineering projects should be examined to contextualize Republican period developments. Thus, this article examines the building and impact of the clubs and schools of the CUP in the provinces and constitutes a contextual frame for their formative role in Turkish modernization.Conference Object Effect of Ambient Temperature on the Flexural Behavior of 3D Printed Composite Beams(Soc. for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering Janie@sampe.org, 2018) Yildirim, Afsin Talha; Eroglu, Fatih; Yesilyurt, Ogulcan; Albayrak, Kubilay; Sas, Hatice Sinem; Çiftçi, Cihan; 0000-0001-9199-6437; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, İnşaat Mühendisliği Bölümü; Yıldırım, Afşin Talha; Eroglu, Fatih; Yesilyurt, Ogulcan; Albayrak, Kubilay; Ciftci, Cihan; 01. In this study, the flexural performance at different thermal conditions is experimentally investigated. This investigation involves the effect of the matrix material with and without short-fiber reinforcements for a specified fiber placement in the beam and fiber filaments placement in compression and tension sides of the composite beam elements along with the ambient temperature change. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 5Emotion Detection Using Multivariate Synchrosqueezing Transform via 2D Circumplex Model(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Ozel, Pinar; Akan, Aydin; Yilmaz, Bulent; Özel, Pınar; Akan, Aydin I.; Yilmaz, Bulent; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Elektrik - Elektronik Mühendisliği Bölümü; 01. Abdullah Gül UniversityEmotion detection by utilizing signal processing methods is a challenging area. An open issue in emotional modeling is to obtain an optimum feature set to use for the classification process. This study proposes an approach for emotional state classification by the investigation of EEG signals via multivariate synchrosqueezing transform (MSST). MSST is a post-processing technique to compose a localized time-frequency representation yielding multivariate syncyrosqueezing coefficients. After obtaining these coefficients from EEG signals for 18 subjects from DEAP dataset, coefficients and self-assessment-mannequins (SAM) labels of those subjects are used for emotional state classification by using support vector machines (SVM) nearest neighbor, decision tree, and ensemble methods. The accuracy rate is 70.6% for high valence high arousal (HVHA), 75.4% for low valence high arousal (LVHA), 77.8% for high valence low arousal (HVLA), and 77.2% for low valence low arousal (LVLA) cases using SVM. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
