Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 8Parenting and Education: Navigating Class, Religiosity and Secularity in Istanbul(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Kolluoglu, Biray; Dincer, Evren M.This article studies the educational choices that secular and religious professional and managerial middle-class parents in Istanbul make for their children. It explores the ways in which class intersects with religion in Turkey where, politics, culture, social, and even economic life are marked by a deep divide among the religious and the secular. Focusing on a particular segment of the middle classes, that with higher economic and social capital, the article brings to fore the ways in which religiosity and secularity structure the processes of transforming privileges into acquired rights in the form of educational qualifications and extracurricular skills. It explores the current sociological conjuncture that bereaves both groups, albeit in different ways, of their ability to fully mobilize their accumulated economic, social, and cultural capitals in reproducing their class position in their children. The article argues that exploring the parenting of education along the secular and the religious divide can unravel the foundational elements of the ongoing competition and conflict in Turkey and enables a deeper understanding of the current divide and the potential for a future reconciliation. The study relies on a qualitative study that entails interviews with thirty families and two focus groups.Article A New Approach for Numerical Solution of Linear and Non-Linear Systems(Korean Soc Computational & Applied Mathematics & Korean Sigcam, 2017) Zeybek, Halil; Dolapci, Ihsan TimucinIn this study, Taylor matrix algorithm is designed for the approximate solution of linear and non-linear differential equation systems. The algorithm is essentially based on the expansion of the functions in differential equation systems to Taylor series and substituting the matrix forms of these expansions into the given equation systems. Using the Mathematica program, the matrix equations are solved and the unknown Taylor coefficients are found approximately. The presented numerical approach is discussed on samples from various linear and non-linear differential equation systems as well as stiff systems. The computational data are then compared with those of some earlier numerical or exact results. As a result, this comparison demonstrates that the proposed method is accurate and reliable.Article Citation - Scopus: 31Numerical Solutions of the Kawahara Equation by the Septic B-Spline Collocation Method(International Academic Press, 2014) Karakoç, Seydi Battal Gazi; Zeybek, Halil; Ak, TurgutIn this article, a numerical solution of the Kawahara equation is presented by septic B-spline collocation method. Applying the Von-Neumann stability analysis, the present method is shown to be unconditionally stable. The accuracy of the proposed method is checked by two test problems. L2 and L∞ error norms and conserved quantities are given at selected times. The obtained results are found in good agreement with the some recent results. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Editorial Editors' Introduction(Cambridge University Press) Yükseker, Deniz; Kolluoǧlu, Biray; Dinçer, Evren MehmetSince before the publication of New Perspectives on Turkey’s spring 2023 issue, politics has been at the top of the agenda of public discussions in Turkey. The reason was the general elections for the presidency and the parliament on May 14; in the run-off on May 28, Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected for a third, five-year term and the party ˘ he leads, the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi; AKP), maintained its majority in the parliament in an alliance with the Nationalist Action Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi; MHP) and smaller extremist parties. To what extent and how quickly the election results will lead to a further descent into full authoritarianism – already well documented in the pages of previous NPT issues – is something that social scientists are likely to continue to observe. Domestic politics therefore will continue to be an important theme for social science research on Turkey from diverse disciplines and methodologiesArticle Citation - Scopus: 25A Cubic B-Spline Galerkin Approach for the Numerical Simulation of the GEW Equation(International Academic Press, 2016) Karakoç, Seydi Battal Gazi; Zeybek, HalilThe generalized equal width (GEW) wave equation is solved numerically by using lumped Galerkin approach with cubic B-spline functions. The proposed numerical scheme is tested by applying two test problems including single solitary wave and interaction of two solitary waves. In order to determine the performance of the algorithm, the error norms L2 and L∞ and the invariants I1, I2 and I3 are calculated. For the linear stability analysis of the numerical algorithm, von Neumann approach is used. As a result, the obtained findings show that the presented numerical scheme is preferable to some recent numerical methods. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Grey Spaces: Transitory Spaces in Liquid Modernity(DergiPark, KARE - International Comparative Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy, 2020) Nihan MUŞ ÖZMENIn the global age of today, while our lives are constantly dragged from one place to another, we consume places temporarily. It is also difficult to establish a connection with these places during short-term relationships. Many thinkers have pondered to describe these places where there is no attachment and where the sense of belonging is lacking. Within the scope of this article, the studies of Foucault – Des Espace Autres (Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias), Relph – Place and Placelessness, Augé – Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity and Koolhaas – Junkspace are discussed, which take the most place in the literature. First, these studies were examined in detail, and then all terms were compared with each other. In order to speak of the terms from a general view, a common term has been developed within the scope of this article and all these spaces have been defined as Grey Spaces.
