    Real-Effort Tasks in Laboratory Experiments
(Economic and Financial Research Assoc - Efad, 2023) Demirtas, Burak Kagan; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 03.02. Ekonomi; 03. Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi
Laboratory experiments used in economics are differentiated in terms of many technical features. One of these technical features is whether the experiment involves a real-effort task. A real-effort task can be defined as a task in which the experiment participants work on aAreal job during the experiment, spend time and effort, determine their performance level and as a result earn a certain amount of money. This study aims to examine real-effort tasks that are frequently used in experimental economics studies, and to discuss potential problems that researchers may face when conducting experiments with real- effort tasks. Within the scope of this review, real-effort tasks commonly used in the literature are categorized under four groups: real-effort tasks based on mathematical operations, puzzles, slider task, and word encryption tasks. Choice of the real-effort task is important for an experimental study because it may lead to misinterpretation of the findings. AAsAa result of the study, the learning effect, the boredom of the task and the abilities required by the task are seen as possible sources of measurement error. While the learning effect and boredom may cause problems especially in within-subject designs, it was found that differences in the abilities of participants may cause measurement errors especially in between-subject designs.

Spillover Effects of the Minimum Wage Introduction Based on Horizontal Fairness: A Lab Experiment
(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2022) Demirtas, Burak Kagan; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 03.02. Ekonomi; 03. Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi
This paper analyses how a minimum wage introduction affects reservation wages and wage offers based on horizontal fairness with a lab experiment with two experimental settings. The first experimental setting was applied to two types of workers (low or high skills), whereas there are one type of workers in the second setting but two types of sectors, covered and uncovered sectors, depending on whether the minimum wage is enforced. Results show the minimum wage introduction generates spillover effects on the high-skilled workers' reservation wages and wage offers, whereas there is no evidence of the spillover effect on the uncovered sector.

Student Performance Under Asynchronous and Synchronous Methods in Distance Education: A Quasi-Field Experiment
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Demirtas, Burak Kagan; Turk, Umut; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 03.02. Ekonomi; 03. Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi
This study examines student performance under asynchronous and synchronous methods in a microeconomics course during COVID-19 pandemic. We conduct a quasi-field experiment in a state university in Turkey. In the experiment, students were divided into synchronous and asynchronous groups and were taught the same weekly material of microeconomics by the methods respective to their group. At the end of the week, both groups took the same multiple question test. Our results showed that asynchronous group performed significantly better than the synchronous group. While showing the comparative advantage of the asynchronous method, our study also underlines the importance of interaction between instructors and students. We discuss our findings from a socioeconomic perspective, where we argue that the flexibility that the asynchronous method offers might have compensated for the accessibility issues (internet and/or computer) during the COVID-19 outbreak. As a policy recommendation, universities can offer lectures with a recorded option to allow students to interact with the course material multiple times.

Tax Compliance Behaviour and Lab Experiments: A Literature Review
(Maliye Bakanligi, 2021) Demirtas, Burak Kagan; 01. Abdullah Gül University; 03.02. Ekonomi; 03. Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi
The purpose of this article is to conduct a literature review of the papers based on laboratory experiments to analyze tax evasion behaviors of individuals. Although experimental studies in economics have become more and more important day by day, there are almost no publications on experimental economics in the Turkish literature. The studies are examined especially in terms of experimental designs because this study also aims to increase awareness about laboratory experiments. This review also discusses the criticism of laboratory experiments and concludes that the results obtained from laboratory experiments are important and it would be beneficial to support them with field experiments.
