    Economic developments, especially in the textile industry, were prioritized in the early Republican period. Sümerbank, established as a state bank in 1933, supported industrial investments. The first factory was opened as Sümerbank Kayseri Textile Factory in 1935, with a loan from the Soviets. The factory complex consists of production, social and residential facilities. Kayseri city center expanded towards this region and a modern urban texture was formed in the area. Houses were built for factory workers, social spaces were created, and kindergartens and schools were opened for the families of the employees. These spaces have created radical changes in the fields of production, education and social life. In 2012, it was transferred to Abdullah Gül University. Some of the buildings have been restored according to needs of the university. However, some are not in use. Employees' Club which was organized for social activities, consists of different functions such as various performances, the main space with stage, club, dining hall, and game hall. The reinforced concrete structure has not been used since the factory was closed, and consequently it has suffered serious damages as a result of abandonment and neglect. In this study, the current situation of the building was documented and its structural and material damages were analyzed. The interventions of the building in the later periods were examined and its original situation was tried to be understood.     Art Nouveau Mimaride Bir Yapıt: Mısır Arap Cumhuriyeti İstanbul Başkonsolosluğu Binası ve Restorasyonu Üzerine

    The building of the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Istanbul has been deemed worthy of the “Building / Conservation Category Award” at the 2020 National Architecture Awards “thanks to a meticulous literature research, determining the original design and details of the coastal palace, which occupies an important place in the silhouette of the Bosphorus and enjoys a distinguished place among examples of the art nouveau movement in Istanbul; solving structural problems with the help of modern technology; uncovering historical and artistic details and successfully implementing its conservation.” Following a thorough review of the history of the building -whose restoration project was completed with a comprehensive approach in 2011- the writer points out that the conservation of this important palace should be a permanent mission.

    Learning from Damaged Historic Constructions: Recent Earthquakes in Turkey

    In February 2023, the southeastern region of Turkiye was struck by significant earthquakes along the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone, resulting in widespread destruction and substantial loss of life. The intense ground movements caused severe damage to the area's architectural heritage, impacting numerous historic buildings that represent a range of periods, functions, scales, construction techniques, and materials. The regions affected by these earthquakes presented a unique opportunity for analysing the damage to cultural assets, a chance that may not present itself again for some time. It is crucial to collect data on the damage sustained by these structures and to leverage this knowledge for their future preservation. The quality of masonry walls in damaged buildings raises important concerns, particularly regarding the bond patterns and the quality of the binding mortar. Damage has also been observed in vaulted monuments. Many of these structures lack tie systems capable of withstanding lateral forces, which would enhance the structural behaviour during earthquakes. Additionally, past restoration efforts warrant attention, particularly in repair interventions such as reintegration; it has been noted that traditional construction practices were often overlooked. The structural relationship between old and new materials was not fully established, and insufficient measures were taken to reinforce this connection, rendering the repairs less effective. The text highlights the evaluation of earthquake damage at the scale of individual structures, with a particular emphasis on damage types associated with restoration practices implemented in the past. This methodology enables the development of appropriate recommendations to address conservation issues. The data used in this study were derived from various projects, particularly those focused on assessing architectural heritage affected by the February 2023 earthquakes, in which the authors were actively engaged.
