Article Architecture as a Tool of Social Modernization: Social Centers in Sumerbank Textile Factories During Early Republican Turkiye(Editura Univ Ion Mincu, 2025) Sozuer, Irem Baz; Semiz, Nisa; Baz Sözüer, İremBook Part A Typo-Structural Exploration of the Monumental Portals of Sinan’s 16th-Century Ottoman Mosques in Istanbul(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2026) Elagöz Timur, Bahar; Timur, Bahar ElagozOttoman architectural portals are significant as grand entrances to mosque complexes, symbolizing the transition from the secular to the sacred. Their design reflects the artistic sophistication of the Ottoman Empire, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. This article highlights significant aspects of monumental portal construction, showcasing a blend of form, materials, and engineering that exemplifies architectural progress. These portals are monumental entrances to mosque complexes, embodying the structural integrity and aesthetic of Ottoman architecture. Key features include load-bearing systems that distribute weight and provide stability, combining arches and columns to create large openings without sacrificing strength. These elements enhance the portals' visual grandeur and durability time. A study was conducted on the monumental portals of 16th-century mosques designed by Architect Sinan, widely regarded as the most famous Turkish architect. Within the scope of this study, the structural analysis of these masonry portals of five mosques - Sehzade Mehmed, Uskudar Mihrimah Sultan, Rustem Pasha, Edirnekapi Mihrimah Sultan, and Kilic Ali Pasha mosques- will be carried out. It examines the material properties, the arrangement of structural elements, and the relationship between the portals and the main structures according to the load-carrying principles. The analysis is supported by typological studies and 3d models, allowing for a comprehensive comparison across the selected examples. These, commissioned by prominent political figures and built by Turkey's greatest architect, are significant historical architectural components that establish a connection with the public. Therefore, these structural analyses and documentation are proposed to contribute to their conservation.Book Part Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Learning from Damaged Historic Constructions: Recent Earthquakes in Turkey(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2026) Kishalı, Emre; Balcı, Esra; Almaç, Umut; Semiz, Nisa; Türer, Ahmet; Kambek, Erkan; Koç, SüheylaIn February 2023, the southeastern region of Turkiye was struck by significant earthquakes along the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone, resulting in widespread destruction and substantial loss of life. The intense ground movements caused severe damage to the area's architectural heritage, impacting numerous historic buildings that represent a range of periods, functions, scales, construction techniques, and materials. The regions affected by these earthquakes presented a unique opportunity for analysing the damage to cultural assets, a chance that may not present itself again for some time. It is crucial to collect data on the damage sustained by these structures and to leverage this knowledge for their future preservation. The quality of masonry walls in damaged buildings raises important concerns, particularly regarding the bond patterns and the quality of the binding mortar. Damage has also been observed in vaulted monuments. Many of these structures lack tie systems capable of withstanding lateral forces, which would enhance the structural behaviour during earthquakes. Additionally, past restoration efforts warrant attention, particularly in repair interventions such as reintegration; it has been noted that traditional construction practices were often overlooked. The structural relationship between old and new materials was not fully established, and insufficient measures were taken to reinforce this connection, rendering the repairs less effective. The text highlights the evaluation of earthquake damage at the scale of individual structures, with a particular emphasis on damage types associated with restoration practices implemented in the past. This methodology enables the development of appropriate recommendations to address conservation issues. The data used in this study were derived from various projects, particularly those focused on assessing architectural heritage affected by the February 2023 earthquakes, in which the authors were actively engaged.Article Optimization of Precision Machine Part Manufacturing by Integration of Grey-Taguchi Method with Principal Component Analysis(Yildiz Technical University, 2026) Kapan Ulusoy, Selda; Şenyiğit, Ercan; Erol, Kübra; Ulusoy, Selda KapanDetermining and optimizing the process parameters impacting the outputs at each production stage is necessary to reduce production costs. The Taguchi Method (TM) and the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) are commonly utilized two techniques for process parameter optimization. In precision machine part manufacturing, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) production is the most critical process. In this study, the objective is to optimize CNC manufacturing parameters using TM, GRA and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in metal sector. Process parameters like operator experience level (in years), CNC machine brand, CNC machine age, and CNC machine size were determined and optimized based on their degree of impact on the outputs. The experiments were carried out using a four-factor, four-level Taguchi orthogonal array (L16), and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted aiming to determine the effects of these process parameters on production time, dimension conformity, and surface roughness performance factors. Selection of these input parameters and performance factors in the study is to provide a solution to a problem in the company from which the data are obtained with scientific methods and to contribute to the literature. Utilizing TM, the optimal values of process parameters are determined as ten years for operator experience, as Mazak for CNC machine brand, as two years for machine age, and as 500x550x550 for machine size. Utilizing the combination of GRA and PCA optimal parameter values are determined as ten years for operator experience, as Yuntes for CNC machine brand, as two years for machine age, and as 700x450x500 for machine size. A sensitivity analysis was performed using 21 different weight sets for performance factors (production time, dimension conformity, and surface roughness). Compared to the initial CNC production process parameters, 45%, 95%, and 504% improvements were obtained in production time, dimension conformity, and surface roughness process parameters. Companies, especially operating in the metal sector, can benefit from managerial practices by considering the ranking of parameters affecting CNC production according to the results obtained from this study.Article An Elementary Proof of Lucas's Theorem(Ramanujan Mathematical Society, 2025) Cinkir, ZubeyirLucas's Theorem is about finding the result of a binomial coefficient modulo a prime p efficiently. The result is expressed as a product of binomial coefficients involving the base p expansions of the parameters of the original binomial coefficient. We give an elementary proof of Lucas's Theorem by deriving an analogous Vander-monde identity modulo a prime number.Article Development of Resistant Starch Type-5 and Its Utilization in Cookie-Preparation(North University Center Baia Mare, 2025-11-30) Oskaybas-Emlek, Betul; Ozbey, Ayse; Kahraman, KevserThe objective of this study was the production of resistant starch type-5 (RS-5), its characterization, and utilization in cookie making. In first part of the study, the effects of starch-fatty acid complex formation (RS-5) between tapioca starch and lauric acid on the structure, digestibility, thermal and morphological properties of tapioca starch were investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed that the RS-5 had a V-type crystalline pattern. FT-IR analysis showed that a distinctive peak at 2846 cm-1 was only observed in RS-5. The resistant starch (RS) content of native starch increased from 22.76% to 28.02% with RS-5 formation. In the second part of the study, the RS-5 was added as a replacement for wheat flour with 10%, 20%, and 30% compared to control sample made with 100% wheat flour in cookie-making. The effects of RS-5 replacement of cookie samples on some physicochemical, estimated glycemic index (eGI) value, physical, and hardness properties were determined. Compared to control cookie, the cookie samples included RS-5 had lower hardness value, higher spread ratio. The eGI value of cookie samples was slightly decreased with the replacement with RS-5. The results demonstrated that the RS-5 has good potential for developing softer cookie with no adverse impact on eGI value.Erratum Correction to “Multifaceted Effects of the Dielectric Component within Plasmon-Assisted Light-Emitting Structures”(American Chemical Society, 2025-12-17) Kulakovich, O.; Muravitskaya, A.; Ramanenka, A.; Efimova, T.; Krukov, V.; Mutlugün, E.; Gaponenko, S.In the original version of the article, the affiliation of Hilmi Volkan Demir needs following correction. The model's performance is maximized through Bayesian optimization and hyperparameter tuning, while its reliability is maximized through layered five-fold cross-validation. Training the convolutional neural network model on 2595 leaf images displaying six different states (five diseased and one healthy) resulted in an average test accuracy of 91.98%. This high, consistent success rate demonstrates the model's generalizability to different datasets without overfitting. While the 'Healthy' and 'Algal' classes were successfully detected with high F1-scores, there are difficulties distinguishing between the 'Blight' and 'Colletotrichum' classes due to visual similarities. This study establishes a new reference point for durian disease classification and makes a significant contribution to the development of reliable artificial intelligence-based diagnostic tools for precision agriculture.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Multifaceted Effects of the Dielectric Component Within Plasmon-Assisted Light-Emitting Structures(American Chemical Society, 2025-10-23) Kulakovich, O.; Muravitskaya, A.; Ramanenka, A.; Efimova, T.; Krukov, V.; Mutlugün, E.; Gaponenko, S.Plasmon-enhanced photoluminescence of molecular probes and semiconductor nanocrystals is a rapidly developing field that promises enhanced sensitivity in chemical and biomedical analyses, as well as higher efficiency of light-emitting devices and single-photon sources. The dielectric component, or spacer, is typically used to control the distance between the emitter and the plasmonic nanoparticle in order to decrease undesirable nonradiative energy transfer to the metal and achieve high enhancement efficiency. While most research focuses on the shape and organization of the plasmonic nanoparticles, less attention is given to the role of the dielectric component in plasmon-enhancing structures. Meanwhile, the dielectric shell or environment critically modulates near-field enhancement, far-field scattering, charge and energy exchange between the emitter and the plasmonic structure, and the general environmental stability of the structure. In this review, we discuss all mentioned topics and therefore consider both the optical and chemical influence of the widely used spacers and dielectric layers on plasmon-enhanced photoluminescence efficiency. Investigating the role of individual components in plasmon-assisted light-emitting structures is critical for optimizing device performance and for advancing the integration of plasmonic architectures in optoelectronic and sensing applications. This review challenges the passive interpretation of dielectrics, revealing them as one of the key players in plasmonic structures, mediating field enhancement, emission dynamics, and chemical stability simultaneously. © 2025 American Chemical SocietyArticle Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Comprehensive Prediction of FBN1 Targeting Mirnas: A Systems Biology Approach for Marfan Syndrome(Galenos Publishing House, 2025-09-22) Orhan, M.E.; Demirci, Y.M.; Saçar Demirci, M.D.S.; Demirci, Muserref Duygu SacarObjective: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic connective tissue disorder primarily caused by mutations in the FBN1 gene. Emerging evidence highlights the regulatory role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in modulating gene expression in MFS, but a systematic investigation into miRNAs targeting FBN1 is lacking. This study aimed to comprehensively identify miRNAs interacting with the FBN1 transcript to reveal potential molecular regulators and therapeutic targets. Methods: Human miRNA sequences were retrieved from miRBase (Release 22.1), and the canonical FBN1 transcript (RefSeq: NM_000138.5) was used for target prediction. Computational interaction analysis was conducted using the psRNATarget server with stringent parameters to detect potential miRNA binding sites. Expression profiles and disease associations of the top candidate miRNAs were further investigated through database integration and literature review. Results: Out of 2656 human mature miRNAs analyzed, 251 were predicted to bind FBN1, with the hsa-miR-181 family exhibiting the highest number of predicted interactions. Evidence from the literature highlighted dysregulation of hsa-miR-181 expression in MFS patients, suggesting a functional role in disease pathophysiology. Conclusion: This study identifies key members of the hsa-miR-181 family as post-transcriptional regulators of FBN1, offering new insights into miRNA-driven mechanisms in MFS. These findings support the potential of RNA-based diagnostics and therapeutic strategies targeting miRNA-FBN1 interactions. ©Copyright 2025 The Author.
