Article Assessment of the Quality of Tuffs in Central Anatolia, Turkey: A Quantitative Classification Approach(Acad Sci Czech Republic Inst Rock Structure & Mechanics, 2025-12-03) Koken, Ekin; Ince, IsmailThe growing global demand for dimension stones necessitates efficient and accurate evaluation methods to ensure their optimal use in various industries. To assess their suitability for various dimension stone applications, this study investigates tuffs from Central Anatolia, Turkey. For this purpose, the fundamental physical and mechanical properties of the tuffs were determined in laboratory studies, and a detailed durability assessment was conducted for each rock type. The analysis results indicate that most of the examined rocks are of low quality and more suitable for non-load-bearing applications. Based on the collected data, fuzzy clustering techniques were applied to develop a new classification system, categorising the tuffs into four classes (Class A-D) according to their potential applications. Additionally, a user-friendly MATLAB-based software tool was also developed to facilitate the implementation of the proposed classification system.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Toward Sustainable Optoelectronics: Solution-Processed Quantum Dot Photodetector Fabrication Using a Surgical Blade(SPIE - Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, 2023-02-13) Savas, Muzeyyen; Yazici, Ahmet Faruk; Arslan, Aysenur; Mutluguen, Evren; Erdem, Talha; Yazlcl, Ahmet Faruk; Mutlugün, EvrenFabrication of optoelectronic devices relies on expensive, energy-consuming conventional tools including chemical vapor deposition, lithography, and metal evaporation. Furthermore, the films used in these devices are usually deposited at elevated temperatures (> 300 degrees C) and under high vacuum, which necessitate further restrictions on the device fabrication. Developing an alternative technology would contribute to the efforts on achieving a sustainable optoelectronics technology. Keeping this in our focus, here we present a simple technique to fabricate visible photodetectors (PDs). These fully solution-processed and transparent metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) PDs employ silver nanowires (Ag NW) as the transparent electrodes replacing the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) commonly used in optoelectronic devices. By repeatedly spin coating Ag NWs on a glass substrate followed by the coating of zinc oxide nanoparticles, we obtained a highly conductive transparent electrode reaching a sheet resistance of 95 omega/? as measured by the four-probe method. Optical spectroscopy revealed that the transmittance of the Ag NW-ZnO films was 84% at 450 nm while the transmittance of the ITO films was 90% at the same wavelength. Following the formation of the conductive film, we scratched it using a heated surgical blade to open a gap. The scanning electron microscope images indicate that a gap of similar to 30 mu m is opened forming an insulating line. As the active layer, we drop-casted red-emitting CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) onto this gap to form a MSM PD. These visible QD-based PDs exhibited responsivities and detectivities up to 8.5 mA/W and 0.95 x 109 Jones, respectively at a bias voltage of 5 V and wavelength of 650 nm. These proof-of-concept PDs show that the environmentally friendly, low-cost, and energy-saving technique presented here can be an alternative to conventional, high-cost, and energy-hungry techniques while fabricating photoconductive devices.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 10The Size and Concentration Effects of Al2O3 Nanoparticles on PSF Membranes With Enhanced Structural Stability and Filtration Performance(Desalination Publ, 2017-07) Saki, Seda; Uzal, Nigmet; Ates, NurayNanocomposite membranes have attracted attention for their high permeability, rejection efficiency, and thermal and mechanical stability. In this study, novel flat-sheet polysulfone nanocomposite membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method with polyethylenimine and Al2O3 nanoparticles to increase the flux and hydrophilicity. Al2O3 nanoparticles were added to the membrane matrix to enhance the permeability, selectivity, and mechanical resistance. Two different sizes of Al2O3 nanoparticles (20 and 80 nm) were used with different weight percentages of 0.2, 1, and 5 wt%. The effects of the size and concentration of the nanoparticles on the structural properties and filtration performance of the membranes were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, porosity, water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis, viscosity, and tensile strength measurements were used to characterize the prepared membranes. The membrane performance was evaluated with water flux and bovine serum albumin rejection tests. According to the results, the membrane containing 15 wt% polysulfone, 1 wt% polyethylenimine, and 5 wt% 20 nm Al2O3 showed the highest pure water flux, porosity, viscosity, and morphological stability. This membrane may have potential uses in water treatment applications.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 6The Selection of Washing Machine Programs With Fuzzy Dematel and Moora-Ratio Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methods Considering Environmental and Cost Criteria(Elsevier Science inc, 2024-01) Fidan, Fatma Sener; Aydogan, Emel Kizilkaya; Uzal, NigmetThe washing machine is the prevalent white household equipment in contemporary society. These machines provide consumers with a range of program options that encompass several variables, including temperature and detergent type. Nevertheless, the selection made by individual customers about the washing machine program they opt for carries substantial environmental consequences during the use stage of textile products. According to studies on the life cycle of clothes, it has been established that the use stage, following the extraction of raw materials, exerts the most substantial influence on environmental impacts. The objective of this research is to assess the washing machine programs provided by the manufacturer through the application of a comprehensive systematic approach for analysis. The evaluation of scenarios for washing machine programs was conducted using the MOORA-Ratio multi-criteria decision-making process. This evaluation considered various parameters, including environmental impact and cost. The life cycle assessment methodology was employed to quantify the environmental impact of the specified criteria. Based on the comprehensive study conducted by integrating criteria across numerous dimensions, it has been determined that the most favorable scenario wass scenario 1, which was developed for the Cotton 20 C program. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to fill a significant need in the current body of literature by undertaking a comprehensive review of washing machine programs that have not been previously recorded. This study employs a comprehensive methodology to investigate the environmental and economic implications linked to these activities, with the objective of delivering significant insights to producers and users.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2The Nexus of Leadership, Political Empowerment, and Social Mobilization: The Case of the July 15 Coup Attempt in Turkey(Seta Foundation, 2020-06-30) Donmez, Rasim Ozgur; Timur, Kasim; Lloyd, Fatma Armagan TekeThis study analyzes the mutually empowering relations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his followers, and how Erdogan's charismatic leadership and image functioned to galvanize his followers on the night of July 15, 2016, when large numbers of them mobilized against the attempted coup. To perform this comparison, the dimensions of the members of these structural systems were first determined. Then, nonlinear static pushover analyses were conducted to assess the performance levels of each frame type. After applying these analyses, time-history analyses were performed with 100 different wind loads for each varying equivalent mean wind speed. Afterwards, the probability of exceeding the predetermined structural performance limits of the structure types was determined using Monte Carlo simulation method. Finally, the results of the simulation method were used to adapt the maximum likelihood estimation method to obtain the fragility curves of the structures. To conclude, it has been revealed that the material cost of the structure doubles when diagonal elements are used, but the wind speed required for a 100% collapse probability to occur in the braced frame is twice as high compared to the moment-resisting frame.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Strategic Investment in BIST100: A Machine Learning Approach Using Symbolic Aggregate Approximation Clustering(Univ Cincinnati industrial Engineering, 2025) Nalici, Mehmet Eren; Soylemez, Ismet; Unlu, RamazanThis study employs the Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (SAX) clustering method to enhance investor decision-making on the Borsa Istanbul (BIST100) by identifying companies exhibiting analogous stock movements. Unconfined compressive tests were carried out on soils mixed with palm fiber and lime under the three curing conditions of immersion in water, cyclic wetting-drying and air-curing for a series of contents of additives. The static stiffness of five types of samples (the number 1 type is the control sample) was also analyzed against curing conditions, curing time and sample type. Results from the tests show that the immersion in water condition is the best for the formation of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and static stiffness, while the air-curing condition is the worst. The highest UCS can be acquired with 1% palm fiber and 20.7% lime, and the highest static stiffness was acquired with purely 20.7% lime content. The fastest increase rate is presented by the curing condition of immersion in water. The logarithmic function is more suitable for expressing the relationship between static stiffness and curing time. It is important for site engineers to understand the curing conditions and stabilizing mechanism of palm fiber and lime for the design and construction of civil engineering projects.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 9Robust Tracking Controller for SEPIC Drivers(Inst Engineering Technology-IET, 2016-11) Ablay, G.The non-minimum phase, non-linear nature of the SEPIC (single-ended primary inductor converter) makes it very difficult to get robust operating conditions under load variations. Sliding-mode control method is utilised to design a robust controller for tracking control of SEPIC converters for various applications. The implementation of the method is illustrated with the use pulse-width modulation comparators in the control loop to preclude the risk of modulator saturation and to ease the operations. The performance of the SEPIC converter is investigated through numerical simulation and analogue electronics implementation to show the validity, robustness and feasibility of the proposed controller.
