Article SDG-Oriented Compulsory Courses in Higher Education: An Exploratory Case from Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2026) Gover, Ibrahim Hakan; Ayten, Asim MustafaPurpose This study aims to examine students' perceptions of a set of compulsory Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-oriented courses implemented across undergraduate programmes at a newly-established Turkish state university. Rather than evaluating individual courses, the study explores how a compulsory, SDG-framed curricular approach is associated with students' reported sustainability awareness, civic orientation and social engagement within a specific institutional context.Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 325 undergraduate students enrolled in four compulsory SDG-oriented courses during the 2024-2025 academic year using a non-probability convenience sampling approach. A 19-item structured survey was administered to capture students' self-reported awareness and attitudes related to sustainability and social responsibility. Descriptive and inferential analyses (including t-tests and ANOVA after verifying normality assumptions) were conducted using SPSS and R.Findings The findings, derived from a composite impact scale, suggest that participation in SDG-oriented compulsory courses is associated with higher levels of sustainability awareness and positive orientations towards civic responsibility and social engagement. Differences were observed across demographic groups, with female students and those reporting prior familiarity with sustainability concepts indicating stronger perceived impacts. Given the exploratory design and reliance on self-reported data, the results should be interpreted as indicative rather than conclusive.Research limitations/implications The study is limited by its cross-sectional design, convenience sampling and reliance on self-reported perceptual data, which restricts causal interpretation and generalisability. The findings capture the initial, formative stages of learning rather than long-term transformation. As the data were collected from students enrolled in the earlier and intermediate stages of a set of compulsory SDG-based courses, the findings do not capture longer-term educational effects associated with the full curricular sequence. Future research employing longitudinal and comparative designs could provide deeper insight into how SDG-oriented curricular approaches develop over time and across institutional contexts.Practical implications The study provides empirical insight into how compulsory, SDG-oriented courses may contribute to students' sustainability-related awareness and civic orientations within higher education curricula. For curriculum developers and policymakers, the findings highlight both the potential and the limitations of using dedicated courses as one possible approach to embedding education for sustainable development.Social implications By foregrounding students' perspectives, the study contributes to ongoing discussions on the role of higher education in supporting sustainability-oriented values and social responsibility.Originality/value This study contributes exploratory, context-specific evidence on students' perceptions of SDG-oriented compulsory courses in Turkish higher education, offering a cautious empirical basis for further discussion and research on education for sustainable development at the institutional level.Article Citation - WoS: 67Citation - Scopus: 82Social Media Utilization of Tourists for Travel-Related Purposes(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2015-07-13) Oz, MustafaPurpose - The aim of this study is to determine social media use by consumers for travel-related purposes. Design/methodology/approach - A quantitative study was conducted after reviewing the related literature. The primary data were collected by means of an online questionnaire, and the results were analyzed using a statistical package program. Findings - The respondents use social media intensively both in their daily lives (> 96 per cent) and in travel-related activities (95 per cent). In addition to the detailed analyses of their usage, a model was developed to identify the factors behind social media use for travel-related purposes. Research limitations/implications - As a result of an online questionnaire method, only consumers having an Internet access could respond to the survey. Additionally, the sample was not random, and the respondents were selected only from Turkey. Consequently, the study may suffer from a generalization problem, especially for markets with major different cultural characteristics. Practical implications - The findings of the study may assist academics and practitioners to better understand social media and Web 2.0 technologies and their effects on consumers. Originality/value - One of the dominant trends affecting consumer behavior and tourism marketing in recent years is the use of social media. It is critical to understand such developments and their effects on consumer behavior that may impact on the distribution and accessibility of travel-related information.Article Citation - WoS: 83Citation - Scopus: 129Gender and Sexuality in the Authoritarian Discursive Strategies of 'New Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2016-11-18) Cindoglu, Dilek; Unal, DidemIn the last decade, discourse on sexuality has proliferated more than ever in the political realm in Turkey. The discursive utilization of women's bodies and sexualities has appeared as the main tool to consolidate a conservative gender regime and the heterosexual family with children is promoted as the basic unit to reinforce hegemonic moral values and norms. This article aims to disentangle the intricate patchwork in the Justice and Development Party's (JDP) gender politics, which is geared towards ensuring pervasive control of women's bodies and sexualities. Within this framework, this article investigates the proliferation of the discourse on women's bodies and sexualities in Turkish politics by delving into the constitutive factors of the JDP's hegemonic gender politics and examining the narrative lines in recent public debates on women's sexualities.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 16Dynamic Soil Characterization and Site Response Estimation for Erbaa, Tokat (Turkey)(Springer, 2016-03-11) Akin, Muge K.; Kramer, Steven L.; Topal, TamerSite amplification is one of the most important factors controlling damage in urban areas through strong earthquakes. Local site effects play an important role in earthquake-resistant design and should be considered for site response analyses. In this study, ground response analyses in Erbaa, Turkey, a settlement in the North Anatolian Fault Zone, using one-dimensional equivalent linear analysis and empirical approaches based on shear wave velocity profiles are evaluated and compared. The ground response analyses were performed with consideration of shear wave velocity, and modulus reduction and damping behavior for different confining pressure and plasticity index-dependent models. The results of ground response analyses and amplification values from empirical equations using shear wave velocity are illustrated in terms of amplification and predominant period maps of the seismically active Erbaa settlement area. The comparison has been made in these produced maps of the study area in order to evaluate different site response analyses.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 26Convenient Site Selection of a Floating PV Power Plant in Türkiye by Using GIS-Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process(Springer Heidelberg, 2024-02-28) Karipoglu, Fatih; Koca, Kemal; Ilbahar, EsraFloating photovoltaics (FPVs) are appearing as a promising and an alternative renewable energy opinion in which PV panels are mounted on floating platforms in order to produce electricity from renewable energy on water such as seas, dams, rivers, oceans, canals, fish farms, and reservoirs. So far, such studies related to the body knowledge on financial, technical, and environmental aspects of installation of FPV have not been performed in Turkey while expanding steadily in other countries. In this study, suitable site selection for installation of FPV power plants on three lakes in Turkey was studied by performing geographic information system (GIS) and the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) as multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method. This detailed study revealed that the criterion of global horizontal irradiance (GHI) was determined as the most crucial criterion for the installation of FPV on Beysehir Lake, Lake of Tuz, and Van Lake. Additionally, it was clearly seen that the Beysehir Lake had the highest value approximately 52% among other lakes for installation, that is why Beysehir Lake is selected as the best option for installation of an FPV system with this multi-criteria approach.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 4Polarisation Over the Meaning of Democracy: The Case of Political Parties in Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Akboga, Sema; Sahin, Osman; Arik, EnginAs the primary means of political organisation, political parties remain vital to contemporary democracies, making it important to investigate their understanding of democracy. This study explores the themes with which five largest political parties in Turkey associate democracy. We studied tweets posted by official accounts of these parties' headquarters and branches, as well as by other Twitter accounts that are institutionally linked to these parties. We found significant differences between the government bloc and the opposition bloc as well as between People Alliance and Nation Alliance in terms of the themes with which they associate democracy. The government bloc and People Alliance use themes such as national will and military coups while referring to democracy. The opposition bloc and Nation Alliance emphasise themes such as equality, freedom of the press, and justice. We conclude that parties' and blocs' different attitudes towards democracy are indicators of political polarisation in Turkey.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 17Does Islamic Inclusion of Syrians Represent a Real Challenge to Europe's Security Approach?: Dilemmas of the AKP's Syrian Refugee Discourse(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Balkilic, Ozgur; Teke Lloyd, Fatma Armagan; Balkilic, Ozgur; Teke Lloyd, Fatma ArmaganDrawing upon the critical geopolitics literature and discourse analysis, this article will explain how the ruling AKP in Turkey fashioned an alternative, Islamically infused migration discourse in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and how it depicted this as counter-hegemonic to the dominant depictions of East and West embedded within Europe's existing securitization discourse. According to the AKP's geopolitical discourse, the differing attitudes evinced in Europe and Turkey toward the Syrian migrants can be explained by civilizational values deriving from the history and religious composition of the respective regions, as between the Orient and the Occident. However, this article examines to what extent this self-promoted discourse of Islamic inclusion has succeeded in engendering a more progressive settlement and integration regime. It argues that it has actually fostered its own system of 'Othering' and has led to the development of selective admission and exclusionary practices similar to those in Europe.
