Article Hydrogen Susceptibility of Al 5083 Under Ultra-High Strain Rate Ballistic Loading(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2024-09-25) Baltacioglu, Mehmet Furkan; Mozafari, Farzin; Aydin, Murat; Cetin, Baris; Oktan, Aynur Didem; Teoman, Atanur; Bal, BurakThe effect of hydrogen on the ballistic performance of aluminum (Al) 5083H131 was examined both experimentally and numerically in this study. Ballistics tests were conducted at a 30 degrees obliquity in accordance with the ballistic test standard MIL-DTL-46027 K. The strike velocities of projectiles were ranged from 240 m s-1 to 500 m s-1 level in the room temperature. Electrochemical hydrogen charging method was utilized to introduce hydrogen into material. Chemical composition of material was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Instant camera pictures were captured using high-speed camera to compare H-uncharged and H-charged specimen ballistics tests. The volume loss in partially penetrated specimens were assessed using the 3D laser scanning method. Microstructural examinations were conducted utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that with the increased deformation rate, the dominance of the HEDE mechanism over HELP became evident. Furthermore, the experimental findings were corroborated through numerical methods employing finite element analysis (FEM) along with the Johnson-Cook plasticity model and failure criteria. Inverse optimization technique was employed to implement and fine-tune the Johnson-Cook parameters for H-charged conditions. Upon comparing the experimental and numerical outcomes, a high degree of consistency was observed, indicating the effective performance of the model.Article Comprehensive Optimization of Shot Peening Intensity Using a Hybrid Model With AI-Based Techniques via Almen Tests(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2025-06-03) Karaveli, Kadir Kaan; Bal, BurakShot peening is a crucial surface treatment technique that significantly improves the mechanical properties of metallic components, particularly their fatigue resistance and ability to withstand corrosion cracking. This study aims to optimize the shot peening process for aviation applications by evaluating and comparing various mathematical modeling and optimization techniques. Seven mathematical models were analyzed using a neuro-regression method (NRM), among which the second-order trigonometric non-linear (SOTN) model exhibited the highest reliability, achieving R2 values of 0.93 and 0.90 for training and testing datasets, respectively. To improve the model's robustness, four optimization algorithms - differential evolution (DE), simulated annealing (SA), Nelder-Mead (NM), and random search (RS) - were applied to the SOTN model. Although each technique offered valuable insights, performance fluctuations across different intensity ranges necessitated the development of a hybrid optimization model that combines the strengths of all four methods. The hybrid model achieved a mean error of approximately 2.69 %, outperforming individual approaches and demonstrating strong potential for reliable shot peening optimization across a wide range of target intensities. These findings provide a comprehensive methodology for AI-based optimization of surface treatment processes in engineering applications.Article Citation - WoS: 3Combined Effect of Midostaurin and Sphingosine Kinase-1 Inhibitor on FMS-Like Tyrosine Kinase 3 (FLT3) Wild Type Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2022-02-01) Sahin, Hande Nur; Adan, AysunObjectives Therapeutic potential of clinically approved FLT3 inhibitor midostaurin has been neglected in wild-type FLT3 positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Sphingosine kinase-1 (SK-1) having anti-proliferative functions is studied in various cancers, but not in FLT3 wild-type AML. We aimed to develop new therapeutic strategies to combat FLT3 wild-type AML by combining midostaurin with SK-1 inhibitor (SKI II) in THP1 cells. Methods The anti-proliferative effects of midostaurin, SKI II and in combination on THP1 cells were determined by MTT assay. The combination indexes were calculated using calcusyn software. SK-1 expression and PARP cleavage were checked by western blot. Cell cycle distributions (PI staining) and apoptosis (annexin-V/PI dual staining) were assessed by flow cytometry for each agent alone and in combinations. Results Midostaurin decreased SK-1 protein level. Midostaurin, SKI II and certain combinations decreased cell viability in a dose dependent manner. The combined anti-leukemic effects of the aforementioned drug combination afforded additive effect. Co-administration induced both necrosis and apoptosis via phosphatidylserine externalization, PARP cleavage and cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 and S phases. Conclusions Targeting sphingosine kinase-1 together with FLT3 inhibition could be a novel mechanism to increase limited clinic response to midostaurin in wild-type FLT3 overexpressing AML after further pre-clinical studies.Article Citation - WoS: 24Citation - Scopus: 24Circular RNA-MicroRNA Interaction Predictions in SARS-CoV Infection(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2021-03-01) Demirci, Yilmaz Mehmet; Demirci, Muserref Duygu Sacar; Saçar Demirci, Müşerref DuyguDifferent types of noncoding RNAs like MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been shown to take part in various cellular processes including post-transcriptional gene regulation during infection. MiRNAs are expressed by more than 200 organisms ranging from viruses to higher eukaryotes. Since miRNAs seem to be involved in host-pathogen interactions, many studies attempted to identify whether human miRNAs could target severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNAs as an antiviral defence mechanism. In this work, a machine learning based miRNA analysis work flow was developed to predict differential expression patterns of human miRNAs during SARS-CoV-2 infection. In order to obtain the graphical representation of miRNA hairpins, 36 features were defined based on the secondary structures. Moreover, potential targeting interactions between human circRNAs and miRNAs as well as human miRNAs and viral mRNAs were investigated.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 5An Optimal Concentric Circular Antenna Array Design Using Atomic Orbital Search for Communication Systems(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2024-05-06) Durmus, Ali; Yildirim, Zafer; Kurban, Rifat; Karakose, ErcanIn this study, optimum radiation patterns of Concentric Circular Antenna Arrays (CCAAs) are obtained by using the Atomic Orbital Search (AOS) algorithm for communication spectrum. Communication systems stands as a nascent technological innovation poised to revolutionize the landscape of wireless communication systems. It distinguishes itself through its hallmark features, notably an exceptionally high data transmission rate, expanded network capacity, minimal latency, and a commendable quality of service. The most important issue in wireless communication is a precision antenna array design. The success of this design depends on suppressing the maximum sidelobe levels (MSLs) values of the antenna in the far-field radiation region as much as possible. The AOS, which is a rapid and flexible search algorithm, is a novel physics-based algorithm. The amplitudes and inter-element spacing of CCAAs are optimally determined by utilizing AOS to the reduction of the MSLs. In this study, CCAAs with three and four rings are considered. The number of elements of these CCAAs has been determined as 4-6-8, 8-10-12 and 6-12-18-24. The radiation patterns obtained with AOS are compared with the results available in the literature and it is seen that the results of the AOS method are better.
