Conference Object The Effects of Intracavity Phase Modulation and Extracavity Optical Filtering on Amplitude Noise of Mode-Locked Pulse Trains(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-09) Özharar, Sarper; Ozdur, Ibrahim T.An actively mode-locked, fiber-coupled semiconductor ring laser that employs both a phase modulator and an amplitude modulator was built. The laser was mode-locked by loss modulation at 10 GHz and the intracavity phase modulator was driven at the cavity fundamental frequency of 1.63 MHz. The effects of the intracavity phase modulation on the stability of the optical spectrum, the timing jitter, and the amplitude noise of the pulse train was analyzed. It was found that using this method, the amplitude fluctuation can be reduced by 40%, and the stability of the optical spectrum can be improved while keeping the phase noise of the system unchanged. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Effect of Fourth Color Component on Enhancement of Color Gamut(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017-10) Genc, Sinan; Uguz, Mustafa; Mutlugün, EvrenIn this work, we simulate and analyse the peak emission wavelength and full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) parameters of nano emitters using four-color mixing approach to provide a tetragonal area as large as possible in CIE-1931, reaching over 160% NTSC area using emitters having 30nm FWHM. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 5Sliding Mode Control of a Switched Reluctance Motor Drive With Four-Switch Bi-Directional DC-DC Converter for Torque Ripple Minimization(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020-09) Ates, Ertugrul; Tekgun, Burak; Ablay, GünyazIn this paper, a method to drive switched reluctance motors (SRM) with a modular four-switch bidirectional DC-DC converter and an H-bridge is proposed. The DC-DC converter operates as a buck or a boost converter with constant frequency to control each phase current while the H-bridge inverter switches only twice in a period to adjust the polarity of the phase voltage. Sliding mode control is designed to have fast and robust current control in the DC-DC converter. The sliding surface equation which is derived for all operation modes including buck and boost modes in motoring and regenerating conditions is defined with the estimated inductor current. The proposed drive system eliminates the bulk DC-capacitors and allows one to adjust the bus voltage individually for all phases. Moreover, the proposed system topology works with only one high-frequency switching device in the DC-DC conversion stage rather than two in conventional drives which provides a simpler current control and reduced switching losses. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 8Short Term Electricity Load Forecasting: A Case Study of Electric Utility Market in Turkey(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015-04) Ishik, Muhammed Yasin; Göze, Tolga; Ozcan, Ihsan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Aydin, Zafer; Yasin, MuhammedWith the recent developments in energy sector, the pricing of electricity is now governed by the spot market where a variety of market mechanisms are effective. After the new legislation of market liberalization in Turkey, competition-based on hourly price has received a growing interest in the energy market, which necessitated generators and electric utility companies to add new dimensions to their scope of operation: short-term load and price forecasting. The field has several opportunities though not free from challenges. The dynamic behavior of the market price has caused the electric load to become variable and non-stationary. Furthermore, the number of nodes, in which the load must be predicted, is not constant anymore and can no longer be estimated by experts alone. In this competitive scenario, statistical forecasting methods that can automatically and accurately process thousands of data samples are essential. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of short-term load forecasting, how it has received a growing interest in Turkey and to propose an artificial neural network that can forecast the short term electricity load. Through detailed performance evaluations, we demonstrate that our forecasting method is capable of predicting the hourly load accurately. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 3Security Through Digital Twin-Based Intrusion Detection: A SwaT Dataset Analysis(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023-10-18) Bozdal, MehmetDigital twin, as a virtual replica of physical entity, offer valuable insights into Industrial Control System (ICS) behavior and characteristics. Leveraging the convergence of digital twins and cybersecurity, this research explores its role in securing critical infrastructure, using the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) system as a case study. Existing intrusion detection systems (IDS) for SWaT encounter challenges related to requiring huge amounts of a dataset for training, being unable to adopt high data dimensionality, and adaptability to emerging threats. To address these issues, a hybrid digital twin model is proposed, combining physics-based models and data-driven approaches. This model facilitates precise attack localization and explainable IDS outcomes. The method exhibits promising capabilities for enhancing critical infrastructure security and adapting to evolving cyber threats. Experimental results demonstrate the ability to detect eight out of nine attack types. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Seamless Mobile Data Offloading in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Based on IEEE 802.21 and User Experience(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014-04) Tüzünkan, Firat A.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Zeydan, Engin; Ileri, Ömer; Ergüt, SalihThe increase on smartphone usage has brought the burden of data traffic with it. Operators are looking for cost-effective solutions to overcome the problem of 3G infrastructure for high contention traffic scenarios. Several schemes were offered to save the moment, and they brought some extra costs including deploying femtocell or WiMax, LTE, LTE-Advanced systems along with their expensive equipment. On the other hand, operators are expanding their networks with 802.11 technologies such that they can exploit the free-band communication. Meaning the data traffic can handover between WLAN and UMTS interchangeably. By using NS-2 simulator, we implemented IEEE 802.21 WG's Media Independent Handover (MIH) module by combining with Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) values collected from user equipment (UE) and observed a recovered throughput for both medium. We found that there is a tradeoff among energy efficiency, delay tolerance and cost. Furthermore, in this study, we integrated a Quality of Experience (QoE) metric during real-time handover decision process so that with this type of collaborative solution, an operator will be unique in terms of user happiness and heterogeneous network management. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Quasi-Static Operation of 2-Axis Microscanners With AlN Piezoelectric Quad-Actuators(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021-08-25) Hah, D.Aluminum nitride (AlN) started to draw attentions as a material for piezoelectric actuation owing to its CMOS process compatibility and safeness for biomedical applications. Due to its relatively low piezoelectric coefficients, AlN-based piezoelectric actuators have been mostly operated in resonance modes, especially in optical scanning. This paper presents a novel design of a 2-axis-tilt microscanner with AlN piezoelectric quad-actuators and meander-shaped hinges for reasonable quasi-static operation. Through finite-element-method simulation, it is shown that the proposed device can have about 9 degree of optical scan angle in two dimensions with the voltage amplitude of 50 V. Lissajous scanning operation of the device is demonstrated as well via simulation. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 23Provision of Ancillary Services by a Smart Microgrid: An OPF Approach(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-09) Martinez-Ramos, J. L.; Marcolini, Alejandro Marano; García-López, Francisco De Paula; Almagro-Yravedra, Fernando; Onen, Ahmet; Yoldaş, Yeliz; Fragale, Nunziatina; Marano-Marcolini, AlejandroAncillary services are all services required by the transmission (TSO) or distribution system operator (DSO) to maintain the integrity and stability of the transmission or distribution system as well as the power quality. Ancillary services that can be provided by a microgrid in grid-connected operation are frequency control support, voltage control support, congestion management, reduction of grid losses, and improvement of power quality. This paper presents the optimization problems used in the 3DMicroGrid project to determine the set-points of the different resources present in the microgrid to provide ancillary services to the power system in grid-connected operation: Frequency control, voltage control and load curtailment. Results of the optimization of the pilot microgrid used in 3DMicroGrid are presented. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Polyp Localization in Colonoscopy Images Using Vessel Density(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-11) Doǧan, Refika Sultan; Yilmaz, BulentIn this paper, we present a new approach for polyp localization in colonoscopy images. This approach is based on the determination of the polyp location using the vessel density in colon images. Primarily, we used pre-processing procedures on the colon images, and then blood vessel extraction techniques were employed. Later, segmentation of the vessel boundaries was performed. With the help of vessel boundaries we calculated the vessel density, and used this for the localization of the polyps. We tested the success of this approach using a publicly available image set (CVC-ClinicDB database). This database consisted of 612 images from 29 different polyps. This approach succeeds in correct detection of 24 out of 29 different polyps. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Performance Improvements of Photonic Lantern Based Coherent Receivers(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014-12) Ozdur, Ibrahim T.; Toliver, Paul; Woodward, Ted K.In this work, the signal-to-noise ratio improvement of photonic lantern-based coherent receivers over single-mode coherent receivers is demonstrated.
