Transformation of Microgrid to Virtual Power Plant – A Comprehensive Review
(Inst Engineering Technology-IET, 2019-02-28) Yavuz, Levent; Onen, Ahmet; Muyeen, S. M.; Kamwa, Innocent
To provide continuity of balancing demand and generation, renewable sources will be more active than today in near future due to the tendency of massive investment on renewable energy sources (RESs) by countries. However, due to the uncertain and intermittent nature of RESs, RESs would create problems on power system operations such as power quality, efficiency, stability and reliability. Owing to having problems with RESs integration, virtual power plant (VPP) has introduced to make this integration smooth without compromising the grid stability and reliability along with offering many other techno-economic benefits. This study reviews structures, types, architecture and operations of VPP along with the status of present implementations worldwide. The types of VPP are introduced in details with the optimisation algorithm used with each type. In addition, VPP is linked with the most of the components in power systems such as distributed generation, active prosumers, transmission system operator and distribution system operator, grid services such as fault ride through, reactive power control as well as with the help of technology such as communications, control and optimisations. This study gives a comprehensive outline of transforming microgrid to VPP that is useful for researchers, consumers, prosumers and utility operators.

Collecting Smart Meter Data via Public Transportation Buses
(Inst Engineering Technology-IET, 2016-10) Bilgin, Bilal Erman; Baktir, Selcuk; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri
With advances in technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have found new applications and their popularity has increased dramatically. In several applications, WSNs have the potential to replace wired data communication systems, e.g. in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) they are the natural option for data communication. WSNs are also proposed for data communication in the emerging smart grid. In this study, the authors merge these two application domains, i.e. VANET and smart grids, and propose a novel solution for effective smart grid data communication. The authors' proposed scheme achieves the task of collecting data from smart meters by utilising VANETs. Using network simulator-2 and with different routing protocols, the authors have performed simulations and shown the efficacy of their scheme in terms of average end-to-end delay and delivery ratio.

Coefficient Ratios-Based Robust Sliding Surface and Integral Sliding Mode Control Designs With Optimal Transient Responses
(Inst Engineering Technology-IET, 2014-11) Ablay, Gunyaz
A coefficient ratio-based sliding surface algorithm and an integral sliding mode control approach are proposed for multivariable dynamical systems. The sliding surface design problem is reduced to the specification of the desired time constant of closed-loop systems. The proposed scheme is able to accomplish a non-overshoot transient response and a short settling time for multivariable systems. The resulting sliding surfaces are robust and optimal in the existence of parameter perturbations. An integral sliding mode control approach is also developed for robust tracking by using the coefficient ratio-based robust sliding surface designs. The developed methods are implemented on a flexible robotic manipulator and a strike aircraft system, and the numerical simulation results are provided in order to show the validity and feasibility of the methods.
