However, the result of the using of CACs in the production of structural elements occur strength decreases at later ages as a result of a series of chemical reactions called 'conversion reactions' seen in these cements. In this study, the hydration kinetics and the crystalline and amorphous structures formed as a result of hydration were investigated in CAC containing different amounts and types of main oxides-based binary and ternary systems. Considering the results obtained, the main hydration product seen in these specimens was ettringite. Unlike many studies in the literature, metastable structures which cause conversion reactions, such as CAH(10), C(2)AH(8), have not been observed. Instead of conversion of the phases, ettringite needles were became thin and elongate which causes the paste structure porous and thus causing expansion and strength reduction at the later stages of hydration in some mixtures produce high amounts of ettringite. (Capparaceae) is grown worldwide. Caper has been used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases including rheumatism, kidney, liver, stomach, as well as headache and toothache. Objective To isolate and elucidate of the secondary metabolites of theC. ovataextracts which are responsible for their anti-inflammatory activities. Materials and methods Buds, fruits, flowers, leaves and stems ofC. ovataDesf. was dried, cut to pieces, then ground separately. From their dichloromethane/hexane (1:1) extracts, eight compounds were isolated and their structures were elucidated by NMR, mass spectroscopic techniques. The effects of compounds on the expression of inflammatory cytokines in SH-SY5Y cell lines were examined by qRT-PCR ranging from 4 to 96 mu M. Cell viability was expressed as a percentage of the control, untreated cells. Results This is a first report on isolation of triterpenoids and steroids fromC. ovatawith anti-inflammatory activity. One new triterpenoid ester olean-12-en-3 beta,28-diol, 3 beta-pentacosanoate (1) and two new natural steroids 5 alpha,6 alpha-epoxycholestan-3 beta-ol (5) and 5 beta,6 beta-epoxycholestan-3 beta-ol (6) were elucidated besides known compounds; oleanolic acid (2), ursolic acid (3), beta-sitosterol (4), stigmast-5,22-dien-3 beta-myristate (7) and bismethyl-octylphthalate (8). mRNA expression levels as EC(10)of all the tested seven genes were decreased, particularly CXCL9 (19.36-fold), CXCL10 (8.14-fold), and TNF (18.69) by the treatment of 26 mu M of compound1on SH-SY5Y cells. Discussion and conclusions Triterpenoids and steroids isolated fromC. ovatawere found to be moderate-strong anti-inflammatory compounds. Particularly, compounds1and3were found to be promising therapeutic agents in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3The Electronic and Optical Properties of a Triexciton in CdSe/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dot Nanocrystals(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016-02-21) Akturk, Abdurrahman; Tas, Hatice; Koksal, Koray; Sahin, MehmetIn the study, we aim to investigate the electronic and optical properties of single excitons, biexcions and triexcitons in a CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dot nanocrystal. The electronic structure has been determined by solving of the Poisson-Schrodinger equations self-consistently. In calculations, the exchange-correlation effects between identical particles have been taken into account in the frame of the local density approximation. We have demonstrated that the optical properties of triexciton systems are remarkably different from the single and biexciton systems. Absorption peaks or transition energies of the triexciton system are well separated from those of single- and bi-exciton systems. We have observed that the core-radius dependent transition energy variations of triexcitons are higher when compared with single- and bi-excitonic systems. The transition energy shifts of double and triple excitons with respect to the single exciton have been calculated as a function of the core radius and we have shown that the energy shifts are inversely proportional with the radius. We have also investigated the radius-dependent changes in binding energies and lifetimes of the structures and the comparative results have been discussed in a detail manner.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 13The Effect of Seed Sludge Type on Aerobic Granulation via Anoxic-Aerobic Operation(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014-06-17) Ersan, Yusuf Cagatay; Erguder, Tuba HandeThe effects of two seed sludge types, namely conventional activated sludge (CAS) and membrane bioreactor sludge (MBS), on aerobic granulation were investigated. The treatment performances of the reactors were monitored during and after the granulation. Operational period of 37 days was described in three phases; Phase 1 corresponds to Days 1-10, Phase 2 (overloading conditions) to Days 11-27 and Phase 3 (recovery) to Days 28-37. Aerobic granules of 0.56 +/- 0.23 to 2.48 +/- 1.28mm were successfully developed from both MBS and CAS. First granules appeared on Day 9 in both reactors, indicating that there was no difference between two seed sludge types in terms of the time period for granulation initiation. The results revealed that the granules developed from MBS performed better than CAS in terms of settleability, stability, biomass retention, adaptation, protection of granular structure at high loading rates (0.86 gN/L d and 3.92 gCOD/Ld) and low COD/TAN ratio (5). Granules of MBS were also found to be capable of providing better protection for nitrifiers at toxic free-ammonia concentrations (38-46 mg/L NH3-N), thus showing better treatment recovery than those of CAS.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 11The Ascent of Geopolitics: Scientometric Analysis and Ramifications of Geopolitical Risk(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022-04-18) Aysan, Ahmet Faruk; Polat, Ali Yavuz; Tekin, Hasan; Tunali, Ahmet SemihIn recent years, geopolitical risk (GPR) has been a crucial factor in investment decisions and stock markets. Therefore, we explore the research on the GPR by employing bibliometric and scientometric analytical techniques. We find 366 scientific contributions in December 2021 from the Scopus database by searching 'Geopolitical risk' in abstracts, keywords, and titles. Our findings show that GPR research has gained momentum in the last three years. Specifically, the journal Defence and Peace Economics has one of the highest numbers of research and citation on GPR. Authors in Asia also dominate the GPR literature. The use of scaffolds combined with stem cells has become a focus in the reconstruction of critical-sized bone defects. Electrospinning became a very attracting method in the preparation of tissue engineering scaffolds in the last decade, due to the unique nanofibrous structure of the electrospun matrices. However, they have a limitation for three dimensional (3D) applications, due to their two-dimensional structure and pore size which is smaller than a cellular diameter which cannot allow cell migration within the structure. In this study, electrospun poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) membranes were spirally wounded to prepare 3D matrices composed of nanofibers and macrochannels. Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells were injected inside the scaffolds after the constructs were implanted in the cranial bone defects in rats. New bone formation, vascularisation and intramembranous ossification of the critical size calvarial defect were accelerated by using mesenchymal stem cells combined 3D spiral-wounded electrospun matrices.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Phase Transition of ZrN Under Pressure(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019-01-14) Durandurdu, MuratA first principles constant pressure approach is carried out to probe the high-pressure behaviour of the rocksalt (RS) structured zirconium nitride (ZrN). The existence of first order reconstructive phase transition from the RS crystal to a CsCl-type crystal is, for the first time, established throughout the simulations. Upon decompression, the CsCl type phase converts back to the original RS structure by following the same transformation mechanism, suggesting a reversible phase transformation in ZrN. The RS-to-CsCl phase change is additionally considered through the thermodynamic theorem and projected to take place at around 225 GPa in experiments. The structural parameters and mechanical properties computed are found to be comparable with some of the previous findings. Additionally, we investigate the response of ZrN to uniaxial compression and tension stresses. The uniaxial stresses initially lead to a tetragonal modification of the simulation box having an I4/mmm symmetry and subsequently structural failure that is expected to occurs at about -10 and 15 GPa in experiments.Article Citation - WoS: 1One-Story Three-Dimensional Frame Structures Behavior Strengthened With External Shear Wall Under Cyclic Loading: An Experimental Study(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021-08-22) Kucukgoncu, Hurmet; Altun, FatihIn this study, the seismic behaviors of strengthened three-dimensional frames, as in real-life structures, are presented. Three reinforced concrete (RC) frames, containing common structural deficiencies were constructed to represent existing older structures. The bare, damaged, and undamaged frames, strengthened by RC external shear walls with steel tie beams, were tested under a reversed cyclic load. The experimental results indicated that strengthening by external shear walls made significant contributions to the frames in lateral strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity. The present work employed castor oil as substrate for one-pot production of CLA using washed cells of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and lipases as catalysts. Among the screened lipases, the lipase Rhizopus oryzae (ROL) greatly assisted resting cells to produce CLA. Mass spectral analysis of the product showed that two major isomers of CLA were produced in the reaction mixture i.e. cis-9, trans-11 56.55% and trans-10, cis-12 43.45%. Optimum factors for CLA synthesis were found as substrate concentration (8mg/mL), pH (6.5), washed cell concentration (12% w/v), and incubation time of 20h. Hence, the combination of ROL with L. plantarum offers one pot production of CLA selectively using castor oil as a cost-effective substrate.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Nanosegregated Amorphous AlBN2 Alloy(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016-09-14) Durandurdu, MuratWe use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to create an amorphous AlBN2 model and find that it consists of nanosegregated two-dimensional hexagonal BN-like and tetrahedral AlN-like domains. These domains are somewhat homogenously distributed in the network. There exist no chemical disorder and Al-B bonding. Amorphous AlBN2 is a semiconductor having a theoretical band gap energy of approximate to 2.24eV, larger than that of amorphous AlN and BN systems. This amorphous nitride might find some applications as an electronic material.
