The changing sociocultural structures and new needs have resulted in some important functional changes in higher education systems with a deep impact on universities serving these needs at the highest level. Besides experiencing these functional changes, the universities today have become spaces of socialization with their social, cultural and sports facilities, replacing their traditional spatial role of offering education only. The local dynamics changing with globalization have now reshaped the global and local roles of universities, highlighting the added value they provide to the society. Sociocultural changes trigger all these functional and structural changes in universities. Therefore, sociocultural factors and their importance should not be ignored in a changing higher education system. In this study, the impact of sociocultural factors with their related spatial structures on world higher education system will be analyzed within their historical contexts, and some suggestions for future universities will be offered considering the current changes. In the first part of the study, the changes in societies and universities will be presented within the historical context. In the second part, the spatial forms and structures of universities will be discussed. In the third part, the catalytic effects of the specific sociocultural factors will be highlighted and elaborated on. This research attempted to trace temporal trajectories of approval of democratic political system as well as it's three alternative forms of government among the electorates of recent three major political parties in Turkey, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). It also revealed the extent these parties' manifesto documents praise democratic political system across the successive eighteen general elections in the modern Turkish political history. It revealed the changes in both public and party support for four alternative regimes across years in modern Turkish history. This research analyzed the World Values Survey and the Manifesto Project data using quantitative research methods. It has achieved four main findings. First, voters are more stable than their parties across time in terms of pro-democracy. Second, democracy clearly emerges as the strongest alternative among the four alternative regimes for all the three electorates. Third, supporting democracy and rejecting its three alternatives occupy different places in the minds of the three party electorates. Fourth, changes in the three political parties' pro-democracy as identified in their manifesto documents are not always parallel with changes in those of their voters.Article Theoretical Investigation of Steric Effects on the S1 Potential Energy Surface of O-Carborane Derivatives(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2023-01-01) Alkan, FahriTDDFT scan calculations were performed for s-carborane-anthracene derivatives (o-CB-X-Ant where X=-H,-CH3,-C2H5 and tert-butyl or-tBu) in order to understand the interplay between the steric effects, S1 potential energy surface (PES) and photophysical properties. The results show that all systems exhibit three local minima on the S1 PES, which correspond to the emissive LE and TICT state, along with the nonemissive CT state respectively. In the case of the unsubstituted system (o-CB-H-Ant), and-CH3 and-C2H5 substituted cases, S1 PES is predicted to be quite flat for certain conformations indicating that it is possible for these systems to reach the nonemissive CT state without a large energy penalty. In comparison, conformational pathways for the nonemissive CT state are predicted to be energetically unfavorable for o-CB-tBu-Ant as a result of both steric and electronic effects. These results provide a mechanism for the enhanced emission of cr-CB-fluorophore molecules with bulky ligands.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2The Nexus of Leadership, Political Empowerment, and Social Mobilization: The Case of the July 15 Coup Attempt in Turkey(Seta Foundation, 2020-06-30) Donmez, Rasim Ozgur; Timur, Kasim; Lloyd, Fatma Armagan TekeThis study analyzes the mutually empowering relations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his followers, and how Erdogan's charismatic leadership and image functioned to galvanize his followers on the night of July 15, 2016, when large numbers of them mobilized against the attempted coup. The article has three sections. The first is a theoretical discussion which sheds light on the concept and the underlying mechanisms of political empowerment and its effects on the relationships between leaders and followers. The second section evaluates Erdogan's characteristics and ruling style, which was instrumental in motivating resistance to the abortive coup. Finally, the third section analyzes the various means by which Erdogan was able to inspire the masses to mobilize against the armed junta through interviews and observations.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Study of Helical Antenna Endowing Short Wire Length and Compact Structure for High-Frequency Operations and Its Exclusive Manufacturing Process(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2023-03-01) Aslan, Melih; Sik, Kaan; Güzelkara, Izzet; Özdür, Ibrahim Tuna; Kilic, Veli TayfunIn this paper a study of a helical antenna resonating at high-frequency (HF) band with a very compact structure is reported. The designed antenna's S11 parameter magnitude change with frequency was calculated for different geometrical parameters. For each case, first, only a single parameter was changed. Then for a fair comparison, multiple parameters were changed simultaneously while the total wire length was set to be constant. Also, shifts in resonance frequencies and variations in -10 dB bandwidths were investigated. Our results show that resonance behaviour changes distinctively with the geometrical parameters and it allows shortening of the antenna wire length. For the designed antenna, the resonances shift to lower frequencies and -10 dB bandwidths around the resonances decrease as the winding wire thickness, number of turns, and turn radius increase. Whereas as the turn spacing increases the resonances shift to higher frequencies and -10 dB bandwidths widen, although the total wire length of the antenna increases. To verify the simulation results, the designed antenna was fabricated with an exclusive manufacturing process and characterized. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results. It demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed manufacturing technique, which is new in the literature and enables accurate and rigid antenna fabrication with simple and low-cost steps.Article Space Prospect in the Flexible Era of Late Capitalism(Konya Technical Univ, Fac Architecture & design, 2020-12-21) Ozmen, Nihan Mus; Asiliskender, BurakThis study is mainly influenced by the idea of Manfredo Tafuri that architecture cannot fulfil its ideological task since it started serving capitalism and there are no more utopias. In his book Architecture and Utopia: Design and Capitalist Development, Tafuri discusses the sociophilosophical tangle in which architects have been struggling since the 18th century. According to Tafuri, the drama of today's architecture is the obligation to return to pure architecture, a matter of form without utopia, supreme uselessness. Another influence on the study is Richard Sennett's book The Corrosion of Character. Sennett mentions the concept of flexible capitalism and explains that work life is not as rigid as it was before. According to Sennett, flexibility has an impact on personal character and asks questions about how to decide the lasting value of we in an impatient society, how to pursue a long-term goal in a short-term economy, how to sustain loyalties to the continually redesigning institutions. Purpose The thoughts of Tafuri and Sennett are discussed through Patrik Schumacher's Parametricism manifesto. In the manifesto, Schumacher reflects architecture's evolving patterns of communication in relation to its social task. The main objective of the study is to propose a future space based on the ideas of Tafuri, Sennett and Schumacher. Design/Methodology/Approach This paper discusses the reviews of books of Tafuri and Sennett and manifesto of Schumacher as a methodology. Findings After the reviews of The Corrosion of Character and Architecture and Utopia, there is a discussion of flexible space through parametric design approach. Finally, there is the prediction of future space based on the findings in the previous sections. Research Limitations/Implications There are no research limitations for this paper. Social/Practical Implications According to this paper, parametric design method can be used in practice to achieve the spaces that are needed by the complex society of global era. Originality/Value This paper synthesizes the ideas of two great thinkers, who have influential discourses on architecture and business world, and approaches them from the perspective of parametric design as one of today's design tools, to make predictions about the future space.Article Solutions to Nonlinear Second-Order Three-Point Boundary Value Problems of Dynamic Equations on Time Scales(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019-05-29) Dogan, AbdulkadirIn this paper, we consider existence criteria of three positive solutions of three-point boundary value problems for p-Laplacian dynamic equations on time scales. To show our main results, we apply the well-known Leggett-Williams fixed point theorem. Moreover, we present some results for the existence of single and multiple positive solutions for boundary value problems on time scales, by applying fixed point theorems in cones. The conditions we used in the paper are different from those in [Dogan A. On the existence of positive solutions for the one-dimensional p-Laplacian boundary value problems on time scales. Dynam Syst Appl 2015; 24: 295-304].Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Sex Effect on the Correlation of Immunoglobulin G Glycosylation With Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2020-12-14) Ercan, AltanRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease which affects females more than males with a presence of autoantibodies. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) produced by adaptive arm has 2 functional domains, Fc and Fab. The Fc domain binds Fc gamma receptors and C1q proteins of the innate arm. Therefore, the IgG Fc domain serves as a bridge between the innate and adaptive arms and is regulated by an evolutionarily conserved N-glycosylation with variable structures. These glycans are classified as agalactosylated G0, monogalactosylated G1, and digalactosylated G2, which are further modified by core-fucosylation (F) and bisecting N-acetylglucosamine (B) moieties such as G0F and G0FB. Interestingly, proinflammatory G0F is shown to be regulated by estrogen in vivo. Here, it is hypothesized that the regulation of G0F by estrogen contributes to sex dichotomy in RA by setting up the level of IgG-dependent inflammation and therefore, RA disease activity (Das28-CRP3). To investigate this hypothesis, IgG glycosylation was characterized in serum samples from active RA patients (n = 232) and healthy controls (n = 232) by serum N-glycan analysis using the high performance liquid chromatography. According to the results, the IgG Fc glycan phenotype originates predominantly from the structure of G0F, and both G0F and G0FB correlate with Das28-CRP3 in females, but not in males. In conclusion, IgG G0F-dependent inflammation differs in males and females, and these differences point to the differential regulation of inflammation by sex hormone estrogen via IgG glycosylation.Article Citation - WoS: 4Relationship Between Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin and Mortality in Acute Kidney Injury(Galenos Yayincilik, 2018-12-03) Kayaalti, Selda; Kayaalti, Omer; Aksebzeci, Bekir HakanObjective: Almost half of intensive care patients are affected by acute kidney injury (AKI). The purpose of this study is to determine parameters that can be used for predicting of early (within 28 days) and late (within 90 days) mortality in patients who are followed-up with AKI in intensive care units. Materials and Methods: In this study, a dataset that contains 50 patients with AKI in intensive care units was used. This dataset contains blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, plasma and urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated hpocalin (NGAL), lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and gammaglutamyl transpeptidase values of patients who were admitted to intensive care for various reasons and who developed AKI on the days 1, 3 and 7. In addition to these values, laboratory results such as serum electrolytes on day 1, blood gas; vital signs such as mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure; and demographic data were also recorded. Data mining techniques were applied to determine correlation between all of these data and mortality. Results: The threshold level of urinary NGAL on day 7 was determined to be 69 ng/mL, and strong correlation was found between this threshold level and early mortality. Similarly, the threshold level of plasma NGAL on day 7 was determined to be 150 ng/mL, and this was highly correlated with early mortality. Besides, strong correlation was also found between the difference in the urinary NGAL levels on day 1 and 7, and early mortality. Conclusion: In this study, plasma and urinary NGAL levels were found to be closely related to early mortality in patients who were followed-up with AKI in intensive care units. On the other hand, any parameter associated with late mortality was not found.
