    Women's Tertiary Education Masks the Gender Wage Gap in Turkey

    This paper investigates the gender wage gap for full-time formal sector employees, disaggregated by education level. The gap between the labor force participation rate of women with tertiary education and those with lower levels of education is substantial. There is no such gap for men. Hence, existing gender wage gap studies for Turkey, where we observe lopsided labor force participation rates by education levels, compare two very different populations. We disaggregate the whole sample by education level to create more homogenous sub-groups. For Turkey, without disaggregation, the gender wage gap was 13% in 2011, and women are significantly over-qualified relative to men on observed characteristics. Once we disaggregate the sample by education level, we show that the gender wage gap is 24% for less educated women and 9% for women with tertiary education in full-time formal employment. Observed characteristics only explain 1 % of this gap in absolute terms. We further disaggregate the data by public and private employment. The gender gap is higher in the private sector. However, women with tertiary education in the public sector are significantly better qualified compared to men, and consequently the adjusted gender wage gap is higher for women with tertiary education in the public sector. Our estimates also indicate a rise in the gender wage gap between 2004 and 2011.

    When the Railway Reached Istanbul: The Making of Sirkeci Terminus, 1870-1888

    Since its establishment as a capital city, the historical topography of Istanbul has witnessed significant changes, created not only by devastating earthquakes and fires, but also by the implementation of large-scale imperial projects. In the existing literature, the transformation of Istanbul's urban area in the nineteenth century has largely explored the topics of new urban regulations, institutions and their implication after the Tanzimat (reform) decree of 1839. This article aims to explore a lesser-known dimension of nineteenth-century developments of the city: the extension of the railway into the heart of Istanbul's historical peninsula, and the spatial change around the Sirkeci district due to the physical expansion of the terminus area. The construction of a larger terminus (inaugurated in 1890) is relatively well documented in architectural history, yet developments prior to this monumental construction have been less explored so far. Thus, this article also aims to investigate the project's development and implementation phases in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the city witnessed continuous urban reformation processes by focusing on the intertwined relations of different agents in the urban space.

    Use of Topological Data Analysis in Motor Intention Based Brain-Computer Interfaces

    This study aims to investigate the use of topological data analysis in electroencephalography (EEG) based on brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Our study focused on extracting topological features of EEG signals obtained from the motor cortex area of the brain. EEG signals from 8 subjects were used for forming data point clouds with a real-time simulation scenario and then each cloud was processed with JPlex toolbox in order to find out corresponding Betti numbers. These numbers represent the topological structure of the point data cloud related to the persistent homologies, which differ for different motor activity tasks. The estimated Betti numbers has been used as features in k-NN classifier to discriminate left or right hand motor intentions. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Triple Positive Solutions for M-Point Boundary-Value Problems of Dynamic Equations on Time Scales With P-Laplacian

    In this article we study the existence of positive solutions for m-point dynamic equation on time scales with p-Laplacian. We prove that the boundary-value problem has at least three positive solutions by applying the five functionals fixed-point theorem. An example demonstrates the main results.

    Three-Dimensional Imaging in Degraded Visual Field

    Imaging at degraded visual environments is one of the biggest challenges in today's imaging technologies. Especially military and commercial rotary wing aviation is suffering from impaired visual field in sandy, dusty, marine and snowy environments. For example during landing the rotor churns up the particles and creates dense clouds of highly scattering medium, which limits the vision of the pilot and may result in an uncontrolled landing. The vision in such environments is limited because of the high ratio of scattered photons over the ballistic photons which have the image information. We propose to use optical spatial filtering (OSF) method in order to eliminate the scattered photons and only collect the ballistic photons at the receiver. OSF is widely used in microscopy, to the best of our knowledge this will be the first application of OSF for macroscopic imaging. Our experimental results show that most of the scattered photons are eliminated using the spatial filtering in a highly scattering impaired visual field. The results are compared with a standard broad area photo detector which shows the effectiveness of spatial filtering.

    The Size and Concentration Effects of Al2O3 Nanoparticles on PSF Membranes With Enhanced Structural Stability and Filtration Performance

    Nanocomposite membranes have attracted attention for their high permeability, rejection efficiency, and thermal and mechanical stability. In this study, novel flat-sheet polysulfone nanocomposite membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method with polyethylenimine and Al2O3 nanoparticles to increase the flux and hydrophilicity. Al2O3 nanoparticles were added to the membrane matrix to enhance the permeability, selectivity, and mechanical resistance. Two different sizes of Al2O3 nanoparticles (20 and 80 nm) were used with different weight percentages of 0.2, 1, and 5 wt%. The effects of the size and concentration of the nanoparticles on the structural properties and filtration performance of the membranes were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, porosity, water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis, viscosity, and tensile strength measurements were used to characterize the prepared membranes. The membrane performance was evaluated with water flux and bovine serum albumin rejection tests. According to the results, the membrane containing 15 wt% polysulfone, 1 wt% polyethylenimine, and 5 wt% 20 nm Al2O3 showed the highest pure water flux, porosity, viscosity, and morphological stability. This membrane may have potential uses in water treatment applications.

    The Role of Spatial Planning for Sustainable Tourism Development: A Theoretical Model for Turkey

    Planning concept is an important concept for realizing the benefits of the tourism sector for localities, public and environment. Planning is a broad term covering several stages from national strategic decisions to unique design applications. Spatial planning is an important aspect of planning with a focus on physical planning in various sectors as well as tourism. The importance of planning has increased with the prominence of a second concept; sustainability. Since the 1970' s, sustainability has continuously gained importance in all socio economic aspects of human beings. It is also important for the tourism sector as this sector has effects on the environment. This article tackles the role and importance of physical planning for the development of sustainable tourism concept. For this reason, a model is built for sustainable tourism development in Turkey as Turkish legislation system regarding planning and tourism should be improved in terms of sustainability. The aim of the article is to determine how to integrate spatial planning to sustainable tourism development and to decide the possible pathways within sustainable tourism development. The model considers all stages from large scale decisions to architectural design within a comprehensive manner. This model could be utilized to deal with all aspects of planning, such as policies, strategies, spatial decisions, building structuring, density, site planning and architecture.

    The Restitution Process in Conservation: Discovering the History of Sehit Ali Pasa Library

    Conservation of cultural heritage sites is a multi-phased process including the architectural survey, restitution and restoration. Survey phase begins with the preliminary research and in situ analysis, which are crucial for comprehending the specifications, potentials and architectural characteristic of the site. After architectural survey, restitution is carried out to understand the situation in the first period of the site and how it has undergone a change in the historical process. During the restitution studies, alternatives are prepared for various periods by using the traces on the building and archival documents. At the last stage of the conservation process, which is restoration, the interventions for deterioration, repair proposals and spatial organization are determined according to the new/current use. This study focuses on restitution process of Sehit Ali Pasa Library, which is currently located in the garden of Vefa High School in Kalenderhane Neighbourhood, and consists of four main parts. The first part focuses on general information of the conservation process. In the second part, the historical background, location, spatial organization, construction technique and materials of the building are examined. The restitution or historical analysis process is the main theme of the third part, and all the findings and considerations are evaluated and interpreted in the final part. In this study, all characteristic features and the layers of the cultural heritage are discussed and documented to indicate the importance of architectural survey and restitution interpretation of the conservation process through the Sehit Ali Pasa Library as a multi-layered example. Unfortunately, the findings in the archives or the libraries are limited to propose certain restitution alternatives or precise historical description for this 18th century library, but it is crucial to underline the importance of detailed research process and methodology, architectural survey to prepare a scientific, reasonable, and consistent historical analyses of cultural heritage such as Sehit Ali Pasa Library as a multi-layered and complex building.

    The Precise Determination of the Johnson-Cook Material and Damage Model Parameters and Mechanical Properties of an Aluminum 7068-T651 Alloy

    Al 7068-T651 alloy is one of the recently developed materials used mostly in the defense industry due to its high strength, toughness, and low weight compared to steels. The aim of this study is to identify the Johnson-Cook (J-C) material model parameters, the accurate Johnson-Cook (J-C) damage parameters, D-1, D-2, and D-3 of the Al 7068-T651 alloy for finite element analysis-based simulation techniques, together with other damage parameters, D-4 and D-5. In order to determine D-1, D-2, and D-3, tensile tests were conducted on notched and smooth specimens at medium strain rate, 10(0) s(-1), and tests were repeated seven times to ensure the consistency of the results both in the rolling direction and perpendicular to the rolling direction. To determine D-4 and D-5 further, tensile tests were conducted on specimens at high strain rate (10(2) s(-1)) and temperature (300 degrees C) by means of the Gleeble thermal-mechanical physical simulation system. The final areas of fractured specimens were calculated through optical microscopy. The effects of stress triaxiality factor, rolling direction, strain rate, and temperature on the mechanical properties of the Al 7068-T651 alloy were also investigated. Damage parameters were calculated via the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization method. From all the aforementioned experimental work, J-C material model parameters were determined. In this article, J-C damage model constants, based on maximum and minimum equivalent strain values, were also reported which can be utilized for the simulation of different applications.

    The Pleiotropic Effects of Fisetin and Hesperetin on Human Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Cells Are Mediated Through Apoptosis, Cell Cycle Arrest, and Alterations in Signaling Networks

    Fisetin and hesperetin, flavonoids from various plants, have several pharmaceutical activities including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. However, studies elucidating the role and the mechanism(s) of action of fisetin and hesperetin in acute promyelocytic leukemia are absent. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the antiproliferative and apoptotic actions exerted by fisetin and hesperetin on human HL60 acute promyelocytic leukemia cells. The viability of HL60 cells was evaluated using the MTT assay, apoptosis by annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining and cell cycle distribution using flow cytometry, and changes in caspase-3 enzyme activity and mitochondrial transmembrane potential. Moreover, we performed whole-genome microarray gene expression analysis to reveal genes affected by fisetin and hesperetin that can be important for developing of future targeted therapy. Based on data obtained from microarray analysis, we also described biological networks modulated after fisetin and hesperetin treatment by KEGG and IPA analysis. Fisetin and hesperetin treatment showed a concentration- and time-dependent inhibition of proliferation and induced G2/M arrest for both agents and G0/G1 arrest for hesperetin at only the highest concentrations. There was a disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential together with increased caspase-3 activity. Furthermore, fisetin- and hesperetin-triggered apoptosis was confirmed by annexin V/PI analysis. The microarray gene profiling analysis revealed some important biological pathways including mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and inhibitor of DNA binding (ID) signaling pathways altered by fisetin and hesperetin treatment as well as gave a list of genes modulated a parts per thousand yen2-fold involved in cell proliferation, cell division, and apoptosis. Altogether, data suggested that fisetin and hesperetin have anticancer properties and deserve further investigation.
