(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015-04) Ishik, Muhammed Yasin; Göze, Tolga; Ozcan, Ihsan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Aydin, Zafer; Yasin, Muhammed
With the recent developments in energy sector, the pricing of electricity is now governed by the spot market where a variety of market mechanisms are effective. After the new legislation of market liberalization in Turkey, competition-based on hourly price has received a growing interest in the energy market, which necessitated generators and electric utility companies to add new dimensions to their scope of operation: short-term load and price forecasting. The field has several opportunities though not free from challenges. The dynamic behavior of the market price has caused the electric load to become variable and non-stationary. Furthermore, the number of nodes, in which the load must be predicted, is not constant anymore and can no longer be estimated by experts alone. In this competitive scenario, statistical forecasting methods that can automatically and accurately process thousands of data samples are essential. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of short-term load forecasting, how it has received a growing interest in Turkey and to propose an artificial neural network that can forecast the short term electricity load. Through detailed performance evaluations, we demonstrate that our forecasting method is capable of predicting the hourly load accurately. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Seamless Mobile Data Offloading in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Based on IEEE 802.21 and User Experience
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014-04) Tüzünkan, Firat A.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Zeydan, Engin; Ileri, Ömer; Ergüt, Salih
The increase on smartphone usage has brought the burden of data traffic with it. Operators are looking for cost-effective solutions to overcome the problem of 3G infrastructure for high contention traffic scenarios. Several schemes were offered to save the moment, and they brought some extra costs including deploying femtocell or WiMax, LTE, LTE-Advanced systems along with their expensive equipment. On the other hand, operators are expanding their networks with 802.11 technologies such that they can exploit the free-band communication. Meaning the data traffic can handover between WLAN and UMTS interchangeably. By using NS-2 simulator, we implemented IEEE 802.21 WG's Media Independent Handover (MIH) module by combining with Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) values collected from user equipment (UE) and observed a recovered throughput for both medium. We found that there is a tradeoff among energy efficiency, delay tolerance and cost. Furthermore, in this study, we integrated a Quality of Experience (QoE) metric during real-time handover decision process so that with this type of collaborative solution, an operator will be unique in terms of user happiness and heterogeneous network management. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015-04) Tuna, Gürkan; Ayana, Esra Kaya; Gülez, Kayhan; Kiokes, George C.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Kaya, Esra
Smart Grid (SG) can be described as the concept of modernizing the traditional electrical grid. Through the addition of SG technologies traditional electrical grids become more flexible, robust and interactive, and are able to provide real time feedback by employing innovative services and products together with communication, control, intelligent monitoring, and self-healing technologies. For being fully functional, utility operators deploy various SG applications to handle the key requirements including delivery optimization, demand optimization and asset optimization needs. The SG applications can be categorized into two main classes: grid-focused applications and customer-focused applications. Although these applications differ in terms of security, Quality of Service (QoS) and reliability, their common requirement is a communication infrastructure. In this paper, we focus on the use of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) for SG applications. We also present a detailed analysis of a NGN-based communication infrastructure for SG applications in terms of global network statistics and node-level statistics. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Performance Analysis of Different Modulation Schemes for Underwater Acoustic Communications
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-09) Bahcebasi, Akif; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Tuna, Gürkan
There is an increasing interest in using Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) for various oceanographic applications, such as pollution monitoring, seismic monitoring, environmental data collection, offshore exploration, and tactical surveillance. UASNs rely on acoustic communications; however, the underwater acoustic channel is highly variable and its link quality depends on environmental factors and the locations of the communicating nodes. Therefore, ensuring reliable communication in UASNs is quite difficult. Moreover, path losses and retransmissions lead to the wastage of energy resources and reduce the network lifetime. In this study, we have utilized well-known underwater modulation schemes to analyse and simulate various underwater scenarios with different depth, distance and Bit Error Rate (BER) values in order to make a fair comparison between the modulation schemes and obtain the optimal transmission power. Performance evaluations show that 32-PSK and 16-QAM techniques achieve the minimum energy consumption rates and enhance network lifetime. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Offer Referees Suggester for the Journal Editors
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-06) Cos¸kun, Mustafa; Hacilar, Hilal; Gezer, Cengiz; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Coskun, Mustafa
Assigning appropriate referees to a journal or conference paper is a vital task for many reasons, including enhancing the journal venue quality and reliance, fair judgement of the papers, and among many others. While assigning the referees to the papers, the editors of a journal venue need to find suitable referees who are both related to field of the given paper and have no conflict of interest with the authors of the paper. Editorial-wise this referee assignment process is implemented in a hand-crafted manner, i.e., the editor needs to find the most suitable referees to the paper via a search engine and manually refines the all unrelated and having conflict of interest authors to the paper authors. Clearly, such a manual referee searching process is tedious and time consuming for the editors. In this paper, we present an alternate automated approach for assigning referees problem using intrinsic random walk with restart proximity measure. In our experiments based on a comprehensive DBLP networks, we show that our approach, called OFFER, significantly outperforms state-of-the-art the random walk with restart based method. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Evaluation of Classification Algorithms, Linear Discriminant Analysis and a New Hybrid Feature Selection Methodology for the Diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-12) Kolukisa, Burak; Hacilar, Hilal; Göy, Gökhan; Kus, Mustafa; Bakir-Güngör, Burcu; Aral, Atilla; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 31% of the world's total deaths in 2016 (17.9 million) was due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). With the development of information technologies, it has become possible to predict whether people have heart diseases or not by checking certain physical and biochemical values at a lower cost. In this study, we have evalated a set of different classification algorithms, linear discriminant analysis and proposed a new hybrid feature selection methodology for the diagnosis of coronary heart diseases (CHD). Throughout this research effort, using three publicly available Heart Disease diagnosis datasets (UCI Machine Learning Repository), we have conducted comparative performance evaluations in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F-measure, AUC and running time. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Ambient Energy Harvesting for Low Powered Wireless Sensor Network Based Smart Grid Applications
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-04) Faheem, Muhammed Yasir; Ashraf, Muhammad Waqar; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Raza, Basit; Ngadi, M. A.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Limited battery lifetime is one of the most critical issues for wireless sensor networks (WSNs)-based smart grid (SG) applications. Recently, ambient energy harvesting (AEH) has been considered to significantly improve the network lifetime of the WSNs-based SG applications. However, extracting a significant amount of energy from the ambient energy resource due to time varying links quality affected by power grid environments is the main issue for WSNs-based applications in SG. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-source energy harvesting mechanisms for WSNs-based SG applications. The propose hybrid ambient energy harvesting framework through the designed circuitry successfully harvests massive power density by capturing the radial electric field (EF) and ambient radio frequency WiFi 2.4GHz band signals present in the vicinity of 500kV power grid station. The design energy harvesting schemes have been implemented on the recently developed routing protocol for SG applications. The experiments using EstiNet9.0, demonstrate that the designed framework is efficient in terms of energy harvesting capabilities to enable a long-lasting lifetime of the WSNs-based smart grid applications. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

A Multi-Channel Distributed Routing Scheme for Smart Grid Real-Time Critical Event Monitoring Applications in the Perspective of Industry 4.0
(Inderscience Publishers, 2019) Faheem, Muhammed Yasir; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Raza, Basit; Ashraf, Muhammad Waqar; Ngadi, M. A.; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Recently, the 4th industrial revolution known as Industry 4.0 has paved way for a systematical deployment of the modernised power grid to fulfil the continuously growing energy demand of the 21st century. This paper proposes a novel channel-aware distributed routing protocol named CARP for CRSNs-based SG applications. In CARP, the proposed cooperative channel assignment mechanism significantly improves the detection reliability and mitigates the noise and congested spectrum bands resulting in reliable and high capacity links for CRSNs-based SG applications. Moreover, to support higher capacity data requirements and to maximise the spectrum utilisation, the proposed multi-hop routing mechanism selects a secondary user relay node rich in spectrum information with longer ideal probability at low interference in the network. The extensive simulation results conducted through EstiNet9.0 reveal that the proposed scheme achieves its defined goals compared to existing routing schemes designed for CRSNs-based applications. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

LTE Ağları için Servis Kalitesi Farkında Aşağı Yönlü Çizelgeleme Algoritması: Kenar Kullanıcıları Üzerine İnceleme
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017-05) Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı; Uyan, Osman Gokhan
4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the state of the art wireless mobile broadband technology. It makes use of the OFDM technology to offer high speed and provides the system resources both in time and frequency domain. A scheduling algorithm running on the base station holds the allocation of these resources. In this paper, the performance of existing downlink scheduling algorithms has been investigated in two ways. First, the performance of the algorithms has been investigated in terms of throughput and fairness metrics. Second, a new quality of service-aware (QoS-aware) fairness criterion, which accepts that the system is fair if it can provide the users with the network traffic speeds that they demand, has been proposed and evaluated. In addition, a novel QoS-aware downlink-scheduling algorithm, which increases the QoS-aware fairness and overall throughput of the edge users, has been proposed. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Enerji Hasadı ve Sıkıştırmalı Algılama Yapan Gizlilik Odaklı Sualtı Kablosuz Ağlarında Ömür Analizi
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-04) Uyan, Osman Gokhan; Güngör, Vehbi Çağrı
Underwater sensor networks (UWSN) are a division of classical wireless sensor networks (WSN), which are designed to accomplish both military and civil operations, such as invasion detection and underwater life monitoring. Underwater sensor nodes operate using the energy provided by integrated limited batteries, and it is a serious challenge to replace the battery under the water especially in harsh conditions with a high number of sensor nodes. Here, energy efficiency confronts as a very important issue. Besides energy efficiency, data privacy is another essential topic since UWSN typically generate delicate sensing data. UWSN can be vulnerable to silent positioning and listening, which is injecting similar adversary nodes into close locations to the network to sniff transmitted data. In this paper, we discuss the usage of compressive sensing (CS) and energy harvesting (EH) to improve the lifetime of the network whilst we suggest a novel encryption decision method to maintain privacy of UWSN. We also deploy a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model to optimize the encryption decision cases which leads to an improved network lifetime. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
