Article Dissecting the Strain and Sex Specific Connectome Signatures of Unanesthetized C57BL/6J and DBA/2J Mice Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging(Wiley, 2026) Neuberger, Thomas; Kamens, Helen M.; Zhang, Nanyin; Ünsal, Hayreddin Said; Arefin, Tanzil M.Mouse models are an essential tool for understanding behavior and disease states in neuroscience research. While genetic and sex-specific effects have been reported in many neurodegenerative and psychiatric illnesses, these factors may also alter baseline neuroanatomical features of mice. This raises the question of whether the observed changes are related to the disease being studied (i.e., pathological differences) or if there are baseline strain or sex differences that may predispose animals to different responses. Over the past decade, tremendous effort has been made to map neural architecture at various scales; however, the complex relationships, including identifying genetic and sex-specific differences in brain structure and function, remain understudied. To bridge this gap, we used C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice, two of the most widely used inbred mouse strains in neuroscience research, to investigate strain and sex-specific features of the brain connectome in awake animals using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By combining resting-state functional MRI and diffusion MRI, we found that the motor, sensory, limbic, and salience networks exhibit significant differences in both functional and structural domains between C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice. Further, functional and structural properties of the brain were significantly correlated in both strains. Our results underscore the importance of considering these baseline differences when interpreting brain-behavior interactions in mouse models of human disorders.Article Comparison of Rapamycin and 3-Methyladenine in Cisplatin-Induced Experimental Cardiotoxicity(Wiley, 2026) Kaymak, Emin; Karabulut, Derya; Yalcin, Betul; Guner, Serife Ayaz; Ozturk, Emel; Findik, Fatma; Boyvat, DuduIn this study, we evaluated how cisplatin cardiotoxicity affects the histological and endocrine functions of the heart and autophagy while using Rapamycin(Rapa) and 3-methyladenine(3-MA) as autophagy activators and inhibitors. Control, Cisplatin (Cis), 3-methyladenine + Cisplatin (3-MA + Cis) and Rapamycin + Cisplatin (Rapa + Cis). Rapa and 3-MA were administered for 15 days, while a single dose of cisplatin was administered on the 7th day. Natriuretic peptide receptor-A(NPR-A), receptor-B(NPR-B) and biochemically atrial natriuretic peptide(ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide(BNP) levels were evaluated in heart tissue. Cis caused a statistically significant increase in NPR-A and NPR-B expression, as well as ANP and BNP levels. However, the levels of Beclin-1 and LC3B were not statistically significant. Rapa was more effective than 3-MA + Cis on NPR-A and NPR-B expressions, but did not show the same effect on ANP and NT-proBNP levels. Cis caused an increase in Beclin-1 and LC3B levels, while a decrease was observed in both 3-MA + Cis and Rapa + Cis groups. Our results revealed that Cis cardiotoxicity disrupts autophagy and endocrine function of the heart. It was concluded that by continuing the activator and inhibitor substances after Cis application, more effective results can be obtained in Beclin-1 expression than LC3B expression and that they can be effective in eliminating the toxicity of Cis.Article Does Your Love Lift Me Higher? A Direct Replication of the Energising Role of Secure Relationships(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2025-12-07) Lagap, Adar Cem; Harma, MehmetPrevious work has revealed that priming people with significant others increases feelings of security and energy, and in turn, boosts exploration motivations. In this preregistered study, we directly replicated Luke et al.'s (2012) Study 2 (N = 281). We found similar results as the replicated study regarding increased security feelings and exploration motivations on the self-report measures after the priming. However, we did not find any support for the increased energy feelings after the attachment security priming. In addition, contrary to Luke et al.'s (2012) results, energy feelings did not mediate the relationship between security priming and exploration motivations. A discussion of null findings, along with the limitations of self-reports and potential misinterpretation of the mediational analyses, follows. To bridge this gap, this study aimed to develop a human brain organoid (hBO) model incorporating essential neural cell types, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes.Methods hBOs were generated from H9 stem cells, and neuroinflammatory characteristics were elicited by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The expression of specific neuronal and inflammatory markers was assessed through qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence staining (IFS), and ELISA.Results IFS of mature hBOs with anti-SOX2, anti-SATB2, anti-MAPT, anti-GFAP, anti-MBP, and anti-IBA1 antibodies and images collected with the confocal microscope confirmed the differentiation of H9 cells into cortical neurons, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocyte cell types. Elevated GFAP, IBA1, NF-kappa B, and IL-6 levels, along with reduced CNPase expression with LPS treatment, were considered reflective of MS-like pathology and were used to test fingolimod and its derivatives. Fingolimod and all its derivatives, specifically ST-1505, decreased MAPT (2.1-fold in ELISA, 1.7-fold in IFS), GFAP (1.8-fold in IFS), TNF alpha (5.4-fold in qRT-PCR), and FABP (1.5-fold in ELISA) levels, and increased IL-10 (11-fold in qRT-PCR) and MBP (2.9-fold in IFS) levels.Discussion The present data collectively showed LPS to evoke neuroinflammation in the hBO model, while fingolimod and its derivatives, particularly ST-1505, exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties by counteracting these evoked changes in the hBO model.Conclusion The findings supported the applicability of brain organoids as a model system for drug screening studies for neuroinflammatory brain diseases.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Measuring Eudaimonic and Hedonic Wellbeing: Development and Validation of the Holistic Wellbeing Measure(Routledge, 2025-10-09) Arslan, G.; Coşkun, M.The primary goal of this study was to develop a concise, theoretically grounded tool –the Holistic Wellbeing Measure (HWM)– that captures both hedonic and eudaimonic facets of wellbeing. Items for the HWM were generated through a careful review of existing wellbeing scales and literature, followed by expert consultation, pilot testing, and iterative refinement to ensure conceptual coverage, clarity, and face validity. Data were collected from three distinct samples: adolescents (n = 453), young adults (n = 361), and adults (n = 358). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor structure, with 12 items reflecting independent but related hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing dimensions. The measure demonstrated strong internal reliability and evidence of convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity across all age groups. Regression analyses further indicated that the HWM contributed unique variance to the prediction of general health indicators (physical, social, and mental health) and psychological problems (depression, anxiety, and somatization), above the effects of gender, age, and psychological wellbeing. The ability to control their chemical, optical, or electronic features by controlling their size and shape explains why these materials are so widely preferred. Nevertheless, altering some of these properties may also lead to some undesired side effects, one of which is an increase in optical scattering upon concentration. Here, we address this strong scattering issue in films made of binary colloidal suspensions. In particular, we focus on raspberry-type polymeric particles made of a spherical polystyrene core decorated by small hemispherical domains of acrylate with an overall positive charge, which display an unusual stability against aggregation in aqueous solutions. Their solid films display a brilliant red color due to Bragg scattering but appear completely white on account of strong scattering otherwise. To suppress the scattering and induce transparency, we prepared films by hybridizing them with oppositely charged PS particles with a size similar to that of the bumps on the raspberries. We report that the smaller PS particles prevent raspberry particle aggregation in solid films and suppress scattering by decreasing the spatial variation of the refractive index inside the film. We believe that the results presented here provide a simple strategy to suppress strong scattering of larger particles to be used in optical coatings.Article Citation - Scopus: 30Thermochemistry of Alkali Metal Cation Interactions With Histidine: Influence of the Side Chain(2012-11-26) Armentrout, Peter B.; Citir, Murat; Chen, Yu; Rodgers, Mary T.The interactions of alkali metal cations (M+ = Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) with the amino acid histidine (His) are examined in detail. Experimentally, bond energies are determined using threshold collision-induced dissociation of the M+(His) complexes with xenon in a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer. Analyses of the energy dependent cross sections provide 0 K bond energies of 2.31 ± 0.11, 1.70 ± 0.08, 1.42 ± 0.06, and 1.22 ± 0.06 eV for complexes of His with Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+, respectively. All bond dissociation energy (BDE) determinations include consideration of unimolecular decay rates, internal energy of reactant ions, and multiple ion-neutral collisions. These experimental results are compared to values obtained from quantum chemical calculations conducted previously at the MP2(full)/6-311+G(2d,2p), B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,2p), and B3P86/6-311+G(2d,2p) levels with geometries and zero point energies calculated at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level where Rb and Cs use the Hay-Wadt effective core potential and basis set augmented with additional polarization functions (HW*). Additional calculations using the def2-TZVPPD basis set with B3LYP geometries were conducted here at all three levels of theory. Either basis set yields similar results for Na+(His) and K+(His), which are in reasonable agreement with the experimental BDEs. For Rb+(His) and Cs +(His), the HW* basis set and ECP underestimate the experimental BDEs, whereas the def2-TZVPPD basis set yields results in good agreement. The effect of the imidazole side chain on the BDEs is examined by comparing the present results with previous thermochemistry for other amino acids. To briefly indicate this important issue, thermo-responsive block copolymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(oligoethyleneglycol methyl ether methacrylate) as a potential nonviral vector has been synthesized. Polyelectrolyte complexes of this copolymer with the antisense oligonucleotide of c-Myc oncogene are also thermo-responsive but, have lower LCST (lower critical solution temperature) values compared to individual copolymer. LCST values of complexes decrease with molar ratio of macromolecular components and presence of salt. Dilution of solutions also affects solution behavior of complexes and causes a significant decrease in size and an increase in LCST, which indicates possible effects of severe dilutions in the blood stream.Article The Need for Death Pedagogy: Academics' Opinions on the Place of Death in the Curricula(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025-06-02) Sonbul, Zeynep FundaThis paper seeks to explore the opinions of educational sciences academics on how death pedagogy should be integrated into curricula across preschool, primary, secondary, and high school levels. The sample comprises academics specializing in educational sciences, who have conducted at least two studies on death, loss, and bereavement, and are affiliated with various universities in T & uuml;rkiye. Seven academics responded to six open-ended questions, and their qualitative responses were analyzed. The results indicated unanimous support for including death pedagogy in the formal curriculum. Key implementation considerations include: (a) collaborating with experts to define the content, methods, and scope; (b) providing comprehensive training for all teachers on the subject and offering additional support for those grappling with their own mortality; (c) ensuring that school counselors play a central role in all phases of planning, implementation, and evaluation; and (d) highlighting the significance of death pedagogy in fostering students' psychological resilience.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 16TD-DFTB Study of Optical Properties of Silver Nanoparticle Homodimers and Heterodimers(Amer Inst Physics, 2020-10-14) Liu, Zhen; Alkan, Fahri; Aikens, Christine M.The absorption spectra for face-centered cubic nanoparticle dimers at various interparticle distances are investigated using time-dependent density functional tight binding. Both homodimers and heterodimers are investigated in this work. By studying nanoparticles at various interparticle distances and analyzing their vertical excitations, we found that as the interparticle distance decreases, a red shift arises from contributions of the transition dipole moment that are aligned along the z-axis with nondegenerate features; blue shifts occur for peaks that originate from transition dipole moment components in the x and y directions with double degeneracy. When the nanoparticles are similar in size, the features in the absorption spectra become more sensitive to the interparticle distances. The best-fit curves from vertical excitation energy in the form of AR(-b) for Delta E-redshift/Delta E-blueshift vs R are determined. In this way, we determined trends for absorption peak shifts and how these depend on the interparticle distance.
