Bio-inspired routing protocol for WSN-based smart grid applications in the context of Industry 4.0
    (WILEY, 111 RIVER ST, HOBOKEN 07030-5774, NJ USA, 2019) Faheem, M.; Butt, R. A.; Ashraf, M. W.; Begum, Seema; Ngadi, Md A.; Gungor, V. C.; 0000-0003-4907-6359; 0000-0003-4628-4486; 0000-0003-1591-7041; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü
Recently, the advences of Industry 4.0 have paved the way for a systematical deployment of the smart grid (SG) to manage continuously growing energy demand of the 21st century. This even allows the fourth stage of the industrial revolution in the power sector, which is known as the smart grid industry (SGI) 4.0. In SGI 4.0, the industrial wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things are envisioned as key promising communication technologies for monitoring various SG applications due to their large-scale coverage, fault tolerance characteristics, and cost reduction. However, highly dynamic nature of the SG environments brings several unique challenges caused by systems and operating devices. This results in hampering the quality-of-service communication requirements for WSNs-based SG applications. In SGI 4.0, the routing infrastructure not only requires a reliable but also fulfills the communication requirements of diverse SG applications. Thus, a sophisticated, reliable and QoS-aware multi-hop communications network architecture enabling a real-time exchange of data for various WSNs-based SG applications is essential in SGI 4.0. Hence, this paper proposes a novel bio-inspired self-optimized butterfly mating optimization-based data gathering routing scheme called Self-optimized Intelligent routing protocol (SIRP) for WSNs-based SG applications. The extensive simulations reveal that the proposed scheme achieves its defined goals compared to existing routing schemes designed for WSNs-based applications.

Disaster-resilient lightpath routing in WDM optical networks
(SPRINGER, 2022) Ashraf, M. Waqar; Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Faheem, M; Tariq, M.; Munir, Abid; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü; Faheem, M.
Optical network serves as a core network with huge capacity and a multitude of high-speed data transmission. Natural disasters and physical attacks showed signifcant impacts on the optical networks such as damages the network nodes and optical links. Network survivability attempts to provide uninterrupted services when network component ceases to function or malfunctioned either in the event of a disaster or due to human intervention. In this paper, two polynomial-time algorithms have been proposed to select an optimal pair of link-disjoint lightpaths between two network nodes such that (1) their minimum spatial distance (MSD) is maximized, and (2) the path length of the primary lightpath is minimized such that backup lightpath has some particular MSD from the primary lightpath while disregarding safe regions around the source and destination nodes. Through extensive simulations, it is shown that, in case of disaster event, the frst algorithm (DPMMSD) computes the backup path with maximum survivability in case of multiple link failures of spatially close nodes, whereas second algorithm (CMMSD) computes the shortest backup lightpath while adhering to the target survivability requirements. DPMMSD, CMMSD and the benchmark EKSP enables the evaluation and comparison of the performance. EKSP computes more pairs hence takes more computing time whereas DPMMSD and CMMSD modestly discard the computation of self and repeating pairs, enabling quick computations

Energy efficient and QoS-aware routing protocol for wireless sensor network-based smart grid applications in the context of industry 4.0
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, PO BOX 211, 1000 AE AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, 2018) Faheem, M.; Gungor, V. C.; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü
Recently, there have been great advances in internet of things (IoT) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) leading to the fourth industrial revolution in power grid, namely, Smart Grid Industry 4.0 (SGI 4.0). In the Smart Grid Industry 4.0 framework, the WSNs have the potential to improve power grid efficiency by cable replacement, deployment flexibility, and cost reduction. However, the smart grid (SG) environment that the WSNs operate in is very challenging because of equipment noise, dust, heat, electromagnetic interference, multipath effects and fading, which make it difficult for current WSNs to provide reliable communication. For SGI 4.0 to come true, a WSN-based highly reliable communication infrastructure is essential for successful operation of the next-generation electricity power grids. To address this need, in this paper a novel dynamic clustering based energy efficient and quality-of-service (QoS)-aware routing protocol (called EQRP), which is inspired by the real behavior of the bird mating optimization (BMO), has been proposed. The proposed distributed scheme improves network reliability significantly and reduces excessive packets retransmissions for WSN-based SG applications. Performance results show that the proposed protocol has successfully reduced the end-to-end delay and has improved packet delivery ratio, memory utilization, residual energy, and throughput. Sleep assistive dynamic bandwidth assignment scheme for passive optical network (PON)
(SPRINGER, 233 SPRING ST, NEW YORK, NY 10013 USA, 2018) Butt, Rizwan Aslam; Faheem, M.; Ashraf, M. Waqar; Idrus, Sevia M.; 0000-0002-4784-0918; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü
In passive optical network (PON), in addition to efficient bandwidth management, a dynamic bandwidth assignment (DBA) scheme can also enhance the energy efficiency performance of the optical networks units (ONUs) during sleep mode. A few such green DBA schemes have been proposed in literature for EPON, however, ITU compliant PONs have not got attention. In this study, the role of a DBA scheme during the cyclic sleep mode for XGPON has been investigated. A sleep assistive (SA)-DBA scheme is proposed that not only improves the energy saving performance of cyclic sleep mode but also reduces the upstream delays and variance for all the type-2 (T2), type-3 (T3) and type-4 (T4) traffic classes. Although, the upstream delay of type-1 (T1) traffic class slightly increases, the average upstream delay of all the traffic classes remains below the set target delay limit of 56ms.

    (ELSEVIERRADARWEG 29, 1043 NX AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, 2017) Fadel, E.; Faheem, M.; Gungor, V. C.; Nassef, L.; Akkari, N.; Malik, M. G. A.; Almasri, S.; Akyildiz, I. F.; AGÜ, Mühendislik Fakültesi, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü; Faheem, Mohamed H.; Gungor, Vehbi Cagri
Cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs) have been proposed to serve as a reliable, robust, and efficient communications infrastructure that can address both the existing and future energy management requirements of the smart grid. The existing and envisioned applications of CRSN-based smart grid include substation automation, overhead transmission line monitoring, home energy management, advanced metering infrastructure, wide-area situational awareness, demand response, outage management, distribution automation, asset management. To realize these applications, in this paper, honey bee mating optimization-based routing and cooperative channel assignment algorithms have been proposed. The developed framework significantly decreases the probability of packet loss and preserves high link quality among sensor nodes in harsh smart grid spectrum environments. The proposed approach performance has been evaluated in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay, and energy consumption demonstrating that it has successfully addressed the QoS requirements of most of the SG applications presented.
