    Değişen Yükseköğretim Sistemini Sosyokültürel ve Mekânsal Bağlamlarda Yeniden Düşünmek

    Eğitim-öğretim ve araştırma-geliştirme; toplumların ilerlemesinde ve gelişmesinde vazgeçilmez bir unsurdur. Üniversiteler bu işlevleri en üst düzeyde karşılayan kurumlar olmakla birlikte, değişen sosyokültürel yapı ve ortaya çı- kan yeni ihtiyaçlar yükseköğretim sisteminde önemli işlev değişikliklerine neden olmuştur. İşlev değişikliklerinin yanı sıra önceleri sadece eğitim verilen mekânlar olan üniversiteler, bugün sahip oldukları sosyal, kültürel ve sportif yapıları ile aynı zamanda birer sosyalleşme mekânı haline de gelmişlerdir. Küreselleşme ile birlikte değişikliğe uğrayan yerel dinamikler üniversitelerin global, bölgesel ve yerel ölçekteki rollerini yeniden tanımlamış ve üniversitelerin topluma sağlamış olduğu katma değeri ön plana çıkarmaya başlamıştır. Üniversitelerdeki bu işlevsel ve yapısal değişiklikleri sosyokültürel yapıdaki değişim tetiklemektedir. Bu nedenle değişen bir yükseköğretim sisteminde sosyokültürel etmenlerin ve bu etmenlerin öneminin göz ardı edilmemesi gerekir. Bu çalışmada, sosyokültürel etmenlerin dünya yükseköğretim sistemini mekânsal yapıları ile birlikte tarihi süreci içinde ne şekilde etkilediği ortaya konulacak ve mevcut değişime bakılarak geleceğin üniversiteleri üzerine bazı değerlendirmelerde bulunulacaktır. Bu amaçla çalışmada ilk bölümde toplumların ve üniversitelerin geçirdiği değişim tarihi süreci içinde analiz edilecek, ikinci bölümde üniversitelerin mekânsal yapı ve biçimleri üzerinde durulacak, üçüncü bölümde sosyokültürel etmenlerin belirleyiciliğine vurgu yapılacak ve son olarak dördüncü bölümde mevcut durum ve eldeki veriler ışığında geleceğin üniversitelerine ilişkin bazı değerlendirmelerde bulunulacaktır.

    Education and research are vital for social development and progress. The changing sociocultural structures and new needs have resulted in some important functional changes in higher education systems with a deep impact on universities serving these needs at the highest level. Besides experiencing these functional changes, the universities today have become spaces of socialization with their social, cultural and sports facilities, replacing their traditional spatial role of offering education only. The local dynamics changing with globalization have now reshaped the global and local roles of universities, highlighting the added value they provide to the society. Sociocultural changes trigger all these functional and structural changes in universities. Therefore, sociocultural factors and their importance should not be ignored in a changing higher education system. In this study, the impact of sociocultural factors with their related spatial structures on world higher education system will be analyzed within their historical contexts, and some suggestions for future universities will be offered considering the current changes. In the first part of the study, the changes in societies and universities will be presented within the historical context. In the second part, the spatial forms and structures of universities will be discussed. In the third part, the catalytic effects of the specific sociocultural factors will be highlighted and elaborated on. Finally, some suggestions will be made for the universities of the future in the light of the current situation and the data available.

    Determination of Factors Affecting International Students’ Satisfaction Levels Using CHAID Analysis

    Internationalization has recently been a core element for higher education institutions (HEIs) worldwide. Various components provide internationalization in HEIs. However, international students stand out from the others due to providing numerous benefits to host countries. Therefore, HEIs around the world seek to increase the number of international students and their satisfaction levels. This study, inspired from the importance of international students, seeks to determine the factors affecting the satisfaction levels of international students who study at a Turkish state university. To this end, an on-line survey consisting of 25 questions were administered to a total of 330 international students studying at Middle East Technical University (METU). Survey data were evaluated using the CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) analysis. The findings of the analysis indicated that the international students’ implications, study degree and gender played a major role in their satisfaction levels. Considering these influential factors determined by the CHAID analysis will contribute to the internationalization strategies which is developed to attract more international students to HEIs.
